Rod Dreher presented this idea in a book of the same name a couple years back. He looks at Benedict's monastic community as inspiration for modern Christians to shelter themselves from the world in some areas. Not a complete retreat, more of a society within society.

If what Pageau says is true, something like BenOp communities might prove a valuable defense for Christians unwilling to assume the next new cultural identity.

We need our own Christian market network. They are pushing hard for a cashless society, and the way that the banks have financially shut down people for the wrong political 'opinions,' it seems like it'll be soon be a time where Christian conviction or moral will bar one from buying or selling. Besides our money shouldn't be going to large hostile corporations like Amazon or Walmart anyways.

That seems to be the direction many are going whether they are Christians or not (speaking of the Benedict Option). I know my family is. Glory to God that I fled California back in 2004 while the gettin was good.

As far as masks go, imagine masked icons. I saw someone vandalize an icon by photoshopping a medical mask on to it. It’s been an interesting journey to watch.

The one good thing to come out of this, from my perspective, is that I no longer have the delusion that Orthodoxy cannot be infiltrated by the possessed, to use Dostoyevsky’s word.

He likes looking at symbolism. That’s nice, but I don’t know enough about this guy to see his interpretations as meaning much.

The course he runs in icon carving is accepted as a graduate level course.

I'm glad I gave you amusement. I think you know full well what I mean. Is this man a priest? Has he been to seminary? Is he well-established in Orthodox authorship or anything else? Any Tom, Dick, or Harry can get on YouTube and start chucking around their opinions about masks and it doesn't mean his interpretation is necessarily Orthodox.

Laugh all you like, but I am very careful not to listen to every know-it-all self-professed guru on YouTube and the internet. I tend to listen to clergy and those who have a legitimacy. Private opinions are like belly buttons---everybody has one.

Carving icons and symbolism is kind of this guy’s “thing,” but neither of these things traditionally fall under what you described as “Orthodox credentials.” Your question was asked with clericalism in mind: “Is this guy an Orthodox cleric/monk?” in which case the answer would be “He has no Orthodox credentials” in that regard. Not merely clerics. There are Orthodox authors who are not clerics and are legit.

If I may be permitted to comment on the effectiveness of masks I would like to say that they can definitely be of benefit in the prevention of spreading the Covid virus by limiting the amount of phlegm or saliva that can exit the mouth while coughing or sneezing. Without a mask a much larger mass of phlegm or saliva is capable of exiting the mouth which can travel much farther and contact people or objects taking several hours or even days before it dries up and the Covid virus dies versus the much smaller particles that are capable of exiting either through or around the mask that can’t travel as far and will likely dry up in a matter of minutes killing the virus. From what I’ve seen the studies that claim masks are ineffective are dealing with containment of the virus but fail to recognize the benefit of the exiting mass that can allow the virus to travel farther and survive longer. Just wanted to share that.

It's funny you bring up the case of Orthodox authors since "Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees!" is what we've been reading since Dormition.

I suppose J. Pageau would be an Orthodox author/scribe since he does write icons into wood if that helps bolster his credentials.
