Gray Lady had called it 'a homeland for racial justice'

The New York Times surprisingly demolished the mainstream media’s previous narrative that Seattle's police-free “Autonomous Zone” was a peaceful area with a block party atmosphere by speaking with local business owners who are now suing the city over the damage caused.

Liberal news outlets largely downplayed the six-block downtown area, first dubbed the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ) and later Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP), because of its location in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood. CNN largely dismissed the chaos, while The New York Times itself celebrated the area as “a homeland for racial justice.”

Townhall senior reporter Julio Rosas, who was on the ground in Seattle at the height of the chaos, told Fox News that the media was downplaying the story.

I learned of these shootings each on the day they happened, just from my casual reading of...

...yes, the New York Times.
(1 of many sources I often take a look at)

And because I read of those shootings in the NYTimes, I immediately reacted by hoping the police would move in.

ACTUAL NEW YORK TIMES HEADLINES, AS EVENTS HAPPENED:

June 20:
1 Dead and 1 Injured After Gunfire in Seattle’s ‘Autonomous Zone’
1 Dead and 1 Injured After Gunfire in Seattle’s ‘Autonomous Zone’

June 29:
Another Fatal Shooting in Seattle’s ‘CHOP’ Protest Zone
Another Fatal Shooting in Seattle’s ‘CHOP’ Protest Zone

The NYTimes is one of about 8 newspapers I've read plenty in, for decades.

It's not even slightly surprising at all for them to give extra details, better than other sources.

It's what they do, consistently.

Hope this helps correct the false spin narrative from Fox News on this one!

I've read hundreds of articles at Fox News in the last few years.

So, I'm at least somewhat familiar with how they often select what information to present, and often give interpretations of what they are presenting.

The Fox News article claims the NYTimes celebrated the zone, and Fox represented that it was the NYTimes -- instead of the protesters being interviewed -- that called the zone "a homeland for racial justice"...

"...while The New York Times itself celebrated the area as “a homeland for racial justice.”
(Fox News in the OP above)

Let's have a look to see if it's really that way!

Here's that very NYTimes article from a cache 1pm on June 11th --

SEATTLE — On the streets next to a police precinct in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, protesters and officers spent a week locked in a nightly cycle of standoffs, at times ending with clouds of tear gas.

But facing a growing backlash over its dispersal tactics in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, the Seattle Police Department this week offered a concession: Officers would abandon their precinct, board up the windows and let the protesters have free rein outside.

In a neighborhood that is the heart of the city’s art and culture — threatened these days as rising tech wealth brings in gentrification — protesters seized the moment. They reversed the barricades to shield the liberated streets and laid claim to several city blocks, now known as the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.”

“This space is now property of the Seattle people,” read a banner on the front entrance of the now-empty police station. The entire area was now a homeland for racial justice — and, depending on the protester one talked to, perhaps something more.

What has emerged is an experiment in life without the police — part street festival, part commune. Hundreds have gathered to hear speeches, poetry and music. On Tuesday night, dozens of people sat in the middle of an intersection to watch “13th,” the Ava DuVernay film about the criminal justice system’s impact on African-Americans. On Wednesday, children made chalk drawings in the middle of the street.

We can see the news report is giving us details about what was happening and about the attitude of the people occupying the zone

We learn at least 1 or more of the occupiers in the zone considered it a 'homeland for racial justice'...

We see the article is telling us a viewpoint from some of the people in the zone, to help us understand what some of those people in that zone were thinking.

See?

But the Fox News writer either wanted to paint it that the NYTimes itself was saying the zone was a homeland for racial justice....or else the Fox writer had an inability to understand what he read.

So the Fox writer either had very poor reading comprehension, or else did intentional misrepresentation.

@Michie, do you think the Fox writer had poor reading comprehension, or was intentionally misrepresenting?

Though I've read hundreds of Fox News articles in the last few years, I can't be sure which.

I think the article is pretty clear with references to support their allegation. No. I do not think they are misrepresenting. All sectors of media have tried to promote their spin on these situations. We all know this.

The actual article in the New York Times is reporting the view of some of the protesters in the zone that it was a "racial justice zone"

, but the Fox News article you posted instead says the NYTimes itself was the actual one saying it was a "racial justice zone."

Which do you think was the case?

Why it matters -- if we post what are very misleading articles, then eventually we ourselves could begin to be held to account for that, once it becomes clear, if we continue.

That's the danger in posting Fox News articles -- you have to do the work Fox doesn't do -- check the facts. If you don't, and it's clear Fox is spinning things badly, then you become gradually culpable for that spinning yourself.

Well why don’t you let me worry about that? I see misleading articles daily posted here by others as well. If you are going to do that with everyone, you are going to stay busy. It’s not just Fox News but news across the board.

There is always that slim possibility that NYT will get something right.
