I wonder how long it took to count the ballots after the 1864 election. Probably weeks, at least.

Yet, the nation did not collapse, despite being in the middle of a Civil War.

What difference does it make, that was 1864, this is 2020 ?

Are you advocating manual counting of paper ballots as in 1864 ?

Also, what was the population then and what is it now ?

If covid-19 requires an unusual response, that makes it an unusual response. It might not be something people want to do in the future under more normal circumstances.

But the nation won't fall.

It will if the election results are rigged because of lost ballots and voter fraud and Americans continue to advocate as system that lends support for it.

There are 34 states that have been doing it for years. Where is the evidence of all that?

For one, the numbers

Two, most of the states don't bother counting the absentee ballots for election day if the number of ballots wouldn't change the outcome, which is common

Mail in ballots will all have to be counted prior to certifying the election in the state. The governments of the various states who are looking to have mail-in voting, are already concerned about the large number of ballots they'll have to contend with and have already stated that they probably will have to delay the certification of who wins. This is actually what Trump was addressing when questioning delaying the election.

Normally, we learn who won on the day of the election.

With mail in voting, we won't know for weeks after, but the states will have to certify their results before the deadline, or they won't be counted
Washington has operated a total mail-in ballot system for years and found that it was no more susceptible to fraud that in-person voting!

Perhaps Trump would prefer that all of the nation's mail-in ballots be sent to the White House so that he could count them personally - which is how its done in "banana republics" and 3rd world dictatorships!
