Trump plans to ban TikTok in the US, report says

President Donald Trump said late Friday that he planned to ban TikTok from the US. The action could come as soon as Saturday.

"As far as TikTok is concerned we're banning them from the United States," Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

Banning TikTok could escalate tensions between the US and China. Politicians have raised concerns the Chinese government could use the app to spy on US citizens or spread propaganda during an election year. Two senators have also requested the Department of Justice open an investigation of TikTok, as well as Zoom, which has China connections.

Last month, India banned TikTok and dozens of other Chinese-owned apps

It's time to start putting pressure on China. I see this as a good move.

Let's see here, China seems to have apps here in the US that are harmful to the best interest of the US yet, China does not permit any US apps in China.

Not a fair playing field, to say the least.

I'm not asking about the general purpose of this. (I actually lean toward agreement with the rationale).

I'm asking what specific constitutional authority he has for this.

The reason I ask is because of US Constitution Article 1 Section 8:

"The Congress shall have power ...To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes"

Ha! Like Trump knows or cares what the Constitution says about the matter.

China is also an authoritarian country that doesn't believe in the freedom of speech.

I cannot find anything in the Constitution that allows a President to do this and many other things Presidents and Congresses have been doing for decades.

Contemporary R people have completely lost touch with what it means to be "conservative". Conservatives were the ones we used to rely on to call for the brakes on runaway authority. But allegiance to party has blown that up.

All the servers for the U.S, versions of the app are located here and owned by U.S. companies.

This is not about protecting U.S. interests. It is about Trump playing tit for tat and protecting his interests. Tic Toc provides accurate information and that usually runs against Trump's interests.

Does that mean the parent company in China is locked out of that data?

Trump didn't do anything. It was all empty talk and hot air, as usual. Probably trying to distract from his failure with Covid.

I don't think you'll find really anyone agreeing with that. In reality we are doing worse than most places.
