I’ve had the chance to explain to my friend the difference between Orthodoxy and Protestantism on a macro level. But, I had a hard time when it came to both of our presuppositional authorities: his being scripture and trusting his pastor and using discernment and believing that the Holy Spirit guides him towards truth.

Obviously this can lead to ones own interpretation being the authority and can lead to distortion.

do any of you have any helpful videos that explain the consensus of the Saints vs. sola scriptura that would be helpful to send to him? Or, if you don’t think a video would be helpful, what would be?

It's good to show them scriptures like this :

Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold The Traditions which You Were Taught,
whether By Word OR Our Epistle.

I am not sure you cold explain the fallacy to him, maybe but they do have an answer to the verse given. Maybe they are so locked that they can't entertain that they are wrong. :shurg:

Jude 3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.

Acts 8:

30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

1 Timothy 3:15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

Because its all about proper interpretation.

As a Protestant who has heard that one before, I can tell you it's not the decisive explanation that you seem to be looking for. I realize which forum I'm in so I won't debate it here. I'm willing to debate/discuss it in detail in other forums or in private messages.

Maybe, hopefully, by God’s Grace, I can explain what has been handed down. By God’s Providence.

seeing as how it took nearly 20 years from Pentecost to the first book of the NT being written, I would ask IF sola Scriptura is true, what did that first generation do?

Good idea. Yeah, I mentioned Pentecost and that the Church has always been. However, this is a good question. Thanks!

Does your friend understand sola scriptura in the reformed sense or as the more modern “solo” scriptura? That would make a difference in how to discuss the subject.

It seemed like it was more of a non-denominational understanding of: scripture is the authority, but I trust my pastor’s theological training, and the Holy Spirit guiding me towards truth if I hear the pastor saying falsehood in some way/shape/form. Does that make sense?

Didn’t the Reformers get the idea of “sola scriptura” from the Muslims, so the principle itself isn’t even Christian in origin.
I didn’t know that it came from the Muslims.
