A genuine encounter with Jesus evokes repentance.

It is an encounter with His Holiness. Any claim to goodness on our part dissolves instantly.

Read Isaiah 6 to get an idea of what a genuine encounter with the Holiness of God looks like.

Much of Modern Christianity tends to present Him as a 'Daddy in the Sky' to fill the pews.

In a genuine revival folks generally will not venture into churches without a sense of being drawn by Him in repentance.

I think this is a common false dichotomy we see on chat sites. Repentance flows from a changed heart. Only God can change our hearts from stone to hearts of flesh (soft) to receive the Gospel.

God saves us by His mercy. When we are brought to Christ He makes us new creatures; Satan can't prevent us from having the desire to please God. When we give in to temptaion, we ask forgiveness and beg God to "deliver us from evil." And God is always there for us. I love John chapter 10!

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Get a notebook and read the New Testament; it is so full of helpful verses. Write them down. I've been taking notes for years. The internet is helpful, too:

Revelation 21:5 And the One seated on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." Then He said, "Write this down, for these words are faithful and true."

A good question but you are lacking somewhat in covering this topic. For example, we have the following verses to consider.

Matthew 7:17
So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.

Matthew 7:19
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 13:23
And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.

John 15:2
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

There is a bit more to the foundation of salvation, than a mere repentance.

To answer your first question @Ann77, yes faith saves you, but indeed faith without repentance is questionable faith, but what I would say that what definitively saves you is having the Holy Spirit:

Romans 8:9
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Until you have His Spirit you are "none of his".

And the most convenient thing about this is you can simply straight up ask God for His Spirit!

Luke 11:13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Ok, I will preface this by saying I am not a Calvanist. However, only one thing saves anyone and that is the power of Christ, of His atonement and the imparting of His gift of faith. That is what saves all of us. It is, as Carl stated, nothing we have done or can do. It is Christ alone. The author and finisher of our salvation. It is nothing that I can boast of in fact I can do nothing to gain salvation. Christ drew me to Him, I was not looking for Him but He found me and I found that I was compelled as a very young man to serve Him once in His presence. Nothing spectacular, no light from Heaven. A confrontation with God which left me, really no choice.

He removes their heart of stone
He gives them a heart of flesh
He puts His Spirit in them
He causes them to walk in His ways, and obey his statues
He makes them His own, and he becomes their God
He grants them Faith
He grants them repentance
He declares them Just
Christ dies for them
Christ turns away the just Wrath of God against them
Christ does the will of the Father and raises them up on the last day
Christ looses none of them
Christ mediates peace between them and God
Christ is their righteousness
Christ transfers them from the darkness to light
Christ intercedes on their behalf
Christ is their High priest
Christ knows them, and calls them


and on and no and on...

These are just some of the tings God does... Now we are effected by these things for sure, but those things are not the cause... God is

We believe because God grants faith
We are His because He adopts us
We repent because God grants Repentance
We walk in his ways because he placed His Spirit in us

God has a purpose for everything he does and he does them with out fail and perfectly so that his purposes stand.

The Reformed answer would be that none of these things save you. God saves you. That is indeed the whole point of election and grace, that salvation doesn’t depend upon anything we do or can do, because nothing we can do could possibly merit salvation.

Faith is the way we receive what Christ did for us, but faith is itself the result of grace.

I wouldn’t try to separate repentance from faith. It turns out that there are two meanings of “repentance.” One is repenting for specific sins. The other is more general — a change in our orientation (remember that the core definition of repent is to turn around), rejecting sin and accepting responsibility for our actions.

The first type of repentance is part of the ongoing Christian life, in Reformed terms “sanctification.” However turning away from sin and accepting God’s standards are part of becoming Christian. I’m not convinced that there is a difference between coming to faith and changing direction in repentance. Remember that faith isn’t just believing some fact or collection of facts. It is coming to trust God and serve him. I think repentance is inherent in that.

Here’s an article from R C Sproul’s organization that says the same thing: Faith and Repentance by Sinclair Ferguson. They point out that some Reformed writers say that repentance comes before faith and others than faith comes before repentance, but the article concludes that the best answer is the one I gave, that coming to faith and repentance are different parts or different ways to look at the same thing. They also look at some typical Scripture passages.

Two things Save you......Christ’s Blood and Your Faith in that Blood, Plus Nothing.....
