The forecast is by the University of Washington who used to be there president's favorite source of this info, except for those who used to tell that the pandemic would be over in 15 days.
=====
Some think that this is very good, virtually stopped. For most of us a 65% increase does NOT mean stopped. Of course, this is before the winter wave, which may not happen, or be noticed, since the first wave would still be continuing.

Is this really political in nature?
I can't think of anything more political than the outcome of the single greatest policy failure in the last 50 years.

Trump has staked five months full of lies on how amazing he is doing handling the pandemic when we are floundering by any fair metric.

Death speaks to that.

It is when one side makes wearing a mask akin to being in shackles, doesn't listen to science, and doesn't take proper precautions because their dear leader has been spreading misinformation and setting a poor example.

Just a bit of an overstatement there.

Nope, not when we have other countries handling the pandemic in measurable and observable ways. And we know the key points where Trump could have done something to slow this spread and didn't. Not to mention there are playbooks and experts for this that Trump didn't even consult.

It is not an overstatement, it is a statement of fact that Trump has made this political to try and sweep it under the rug. He thinks it makes him look bad, so he wants everyone to ignore it. Part of that is not taking precautions and 'keeping the economy open'.

But we are all paying for him making this political and not doing the leadership thing that nearly every past president would have done.

it isn't. This is the second worst global pandemic in a century, only being beaten by AIDS, which is a significantly different kind of outbreak.

A country directly next to China, with over 90 million people has had ~300 infection and 0 deaths. We have an entire ocean between us and have had over 3 million infections and 138,000 deaths as of this post. Germany, a more comparable nation to our own, has had 200,000 infections and 9,000 deaths.

We are the 6th major nation by death rate, and continuing to rocket towards the top. Only 3 other nations (Brazil, Peru, and Chile) are showing numbers significantly worse than us, and my top our end total. And there is little end to the stupidity in sight. Some of our bets hopes actually lie in major companies trying to make up for Trump's lack of leadership by establishing policies to help curb the spread.

This is already a massive disaster, but if we don't get this under control within the next month or so, it will truly blow up in our faces.

It was this President who decided to "politicize" this Pandemic from Day 1 - did he not accuse the Democrats of inventing it as a political "hoax" and claimed that those states that refusing to "fast-track" the reopening of their economies were participating in a "never-Trump" conspiracy to suppress the American economy until after the 2020 Election?

Both the President and the Vice President have made the outrageous assertions that educators shouldn't allow the restrictions imposed by the Trump Administration's own CDC guidelines to interfere with the reopening of the nation's schools - the wearing protective masks is now being interpreted as a political statement!

By the time the dust settles, I suspect that many historians will be making convincing arguments that this Pandemic represents the greatest lapse of presidential judgement in the history of the Republic - the performance of other nations has already demonstrated that given the proper leadership, much of this economic and medical "carnage" could have been averted!

Dr. Bandy Lee is right... Trump is mentally ill. It's not just "Trump being Trump". He really has a loose grip on reality. He's beginning to sound like he's talking about a completely different America, other than the one we actually live in.

We really do live in a cyberpunk future predicted in the 70's and 80's, because now private corporations are the closest thing we have to actual leaders who exercise responsibility. Government is so corrupt and broken, in comparison.

Not a great place to be if you value liberal democracy. Corporations pay lip service to liberalism, but they aren't really interested in democracy.

Death is too busy to give interviews, and the combine is far too loud.

It would be reasonable to let the dust settle and see what history has to say. Right now everyone is a Monday morning quarterback, 20-20 vision after the fact.

Don't forget the tweets telling people to liberate their states from restrictions, leading to armed right-wing groups occupying government buildings.

Even while in the midst of it, the U.S. has clearly bungled their response to the pandemic. History won't undo things like the lack of critical, early testing or the politicization of wearing masks. Those are already in the history books.

The only was the U.S. could come out looking less awful in the long run is if most other countries let their own guards down and allow massive lapses of their own.

But here is hoping other countries aren't that stupid.

That's a good point. But there is something to be said for understanding the state of play while the game is still ongoing. It would help us to adjust our strategy.

Right now here's how the DEATH rates are comparing between the US and EU. Similar sized populations (300million and 400million respectively):

july17_small.png

It's very easy to see that for similarly situated geographies (in terms of population, development, etc.) that the US is failing severely. We didn't have as high a spike but we have not "adapted" and brought our numbers down sufficiently.

As such THIS lends credence to people thinking that historians WILL judge us to be lacking in how we dealt with this.

We are losing at half-time by a HUGE margin. Playing as badly as we have been playing will NOT get us to "victory"
