The Bible is the Word of God. Ok, but how do you know that?

Why do you believe your Bible is the Word of God?

  • I don't really know, I always accepted it for granted.

All Christians believe that the book they hold in their hands and that has the word 'Bible' printed on it is the Word of God, inspired and infallibly true. But not all Christians believe this for the same reason. Furthermore, not all Christians have the same Bible. Some have more books than others, some have shorter books, some even have different words added that change the meaning of what is written. Which begs the question, how do you know that your Bible is the Word of God? How would you explain this to a non-believer?

Some may try and avoid the question by answering "because the Bible says it is God's Word." Sure, but so does the Koran, or the book of Mormons. Why then do we not accept them as the Word of God as well?

Some may say "because I feel it is God's Word." That's nice, but if you think the Christian faith is reasonable, then there must be a rationale behind it.

The Bible itself admonishes us to "always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15). Can you give a good reason why you believe the Bible is the Word of God?

Well, the Bible says Jesus is the Word of God, not the scriptures. So, if you take that title from the son and put it on the book, then you also have to alter the meaning of the title.

With that in mind, I would ask back: what would be your purpose of calling the Bible the Word of God?

I have a bunch of reasons.

First of all, it is just very convincing (to me).

I came across a few Bible verses in a YouTube video and I believed them and that they came from God.

That was the beginning of my search for God.

You might say at that point I "felt" that the Bible was true. Something I also felt as a kid. Growing up in an atheistic family, we still had a Bible in the house, and I remember being in awe of it (despite knowing almost nothing about it).

Anyway, feeling it's true wasn't good enough for me.

So I started looking for proof that the Bible is true.

I couldn't find it, but didn't give up my search and turned to watching sermons instead.

As I watched my faith grew (as the preachers used and repeated parts of the Word of God).

I then after a week or so asked God for the Holy Spirit, so that I might be born again and saved.
I received upon asking. That to me was the best proof I had that the Bible is true and Jesus alive.

In the years that followed I stumbled upon some more evidence that the Bible originates with God.

Some of them are included in the following video (it's an Exegesis of Genesis 1:1 - of the original Hebrew):

My answer:

We receive all these books [the 66], and these only, as holy and canonical, for the regulation, foundation, and confirmation of our faith; believing without any doubt, all things contained in them, not so much because the Church receives and approves them as such, but more especially because the Holy Ghost witnesseth in our hearts, that they are from God, whereof they carry the evidence in themselves. For the very blind are able to perceive that the things foretold in them are fulfilling.

I wouldn't explain it to a non believer I'd just tell them the gospel. I believe it bacause of its power. It converted me.

God inspired the writers of the Bible. The writers were various people living in different periods, with various personalities, cultures, levels of education and understanding. He inspired them to write and the sacred scriptures contain all things necessary for our salvation.
Once described as the "best selling book of all time", no other text has touched human lives, or shaped the course of world history, as profoundly as the Bible. Every day it is read by millions, and even those who do not read it regularly are likely to have a copy on their bookshelf. It is also possibly the worlds most smuggled book and people have literally lost their lives for sharing it, translating it and defending what it teaches.
The Bible has also affected the lives of non-believers, and many of its sayings have been popularised in culture. An eye-for-an-eye, tooth for a tooth, the blind leading the blind, the eleventh hour, all these are phrases in common use that have their origin in the scriptures.

That's the winning answer. The witness is in you. God in you is witnessing the truth.

There are infact 73 books in the Bible.

Luther removed the ones he didnt like as they went against his ideas.

He wanted to remove James, Hebrews, Jude, and Revelation too but in the end didnt.

But, thats for another time, another thread!

Also, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Heb 4:12

In a class by itself.

No, actually; Luther simply restricted the OT to the Hebrew canon of the Jews.

He wanted to remove James, Hebrews, Jude, and Revelation too but in the end didnt.

A persistent myth.

First you may need to understand the big picture. God's Judgment is only valid when His Word is conveyed by means of the best form of human witnessing made of human testimonies. It is a critical document not only to humans but also to God.

Now an analogy for the situation is, if the US government has a critical message for its citizens then what should it do, to enforce the message to be broadcast in all the states or just one or two of them? While Muslin is local in the middle east and Hinduism is local in India, Christianity went international ever since day one, with the explicit command of preaching the gospel to each and every nations.

Kuran is not a witness account of testimony, it's rather a hearsay from a self proclaimed "angel" whose identity cannot be examined and confirmed by people back then. While all OT prophets acquire information from God directly to have the info recorded in the Bible, instead of going through an unknown "angel". The Bible is about how the witnesses (prophets) in the different period of time all portray the same God. It's a multiple account witnessing, while Kuran is a single account hearsay from Muhammad alone (so is Mormon, if Mormon is required to be saved then Christians in majority in the past 2000 years cannot be saved).

There are many factors which make the Bible stand out. The above is just two of them. Mostly, those Christians close to God are told so by God that He's in control and the Bible is His Word. It's God breathed and cannot be broken.

Its not my job to convince you its the word of God, its the Holy spirit's job. Our job as Christians is to love and serve others and to always be ready and willing for the Holy Spirit to use us.
