• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have tried to receive a gift of speak in tongues by watching a sermon on youtube from encounter tv channel. I feel like I received it. My tongues move but I just not sure that it really speak in tongues because related to my ocd that I afraid that I might speak somethings I should not. Althought, I overcome it, but it not completely. I still used to make sure my mouth shut and contracting my tongues muscle so to be make sure they don't move. And sometimes I feel like my tongues move because I have contracting its muscle. I mean maybe it the side affect.

Maybe,I would love for you to share what it like to speak in tongues or when you first receive the gift.

And also, I got a question.
If I really speak in tongues, does that means I didn't do any unpardonable sin and I get my salvation. Although, I overcome most of the fear, but it still a little worried. From my ocd.

#sorry for my english, I hope you understand.I don't sure Do I used "contracting muscle" correct, I translate it on google translate.

Very simply, you received the Holy Spirit when you were Baptized, the speaking in tongues happens at that time, but if it did not happen like that with you.

I only ask these questions to find out where you are as a Believer.

1) Were you Baptized after you Believed?
2) What Denomination do you belong.

If you have Prayed about receiving the Gift of Speaking in Tongues then you have received it, unless you have not been Baptized.

If you have been Baptized, then speak what comes, don't think about the words, what they might sound like, or if they make sense to you.

Speak a few word or words don't expect to have a whole vocabulary at first.

When you began to speak your own Language could you carry on a conversation right away, no, it took you years to develop the ability to speak.

Don't be discouraged if you only have a few words and you keep repeating them over and over, God knows what they mean, and when He is ready He will give you more.

When you first begin to speak in Tongues you will more than likely be Praying for yourself, more than anything else, the Holy Spirit is in you to help you and guide you, let Him do His work in you, changing you, helping you grow as a Child of God.

Luk 11:9-13
9) And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10) For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
11) If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12) Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

And also, I got a question.
If I really speak in tongues, does that means I didn't do any unpardonable sin and I get my salvation.

The unpardonable sin is saying the working of the Holy Spirit is really Satan.
You want to speak in Tongues as described in the Bible, therefore I do not believe you have said such a thing about the Holy Spirit, someone who would say such things would be someone like an Antichrist, or an Atheist.

Maybe,I would love for you to share what it like to speak in tongues or when you first receive the gift.

Like I said I received the Holy Spirit at my Baptism and came up out of the water speaking in tongues.

Be Blessed in Christ.

Yes, your "contracting muscle" is correct in English.

But more importantly than receiving the gift of speaking in tongues would by why you want to receive this gift.

You don't have to say here, just think about it.

If you are questioning if you speak in tongues its because you probably don't. I don't have the gift, although I had experienced it, but from my understanding and from what I've heard its something from the depth of your spirit that come out of your gut.

My advice is not to force yourself in getting anything. Everyone has a gift, work on finding your gift and developing it, other gifts come with time and as you need them for your main gift.

Also, just because someone speaks in tongues it doesn't mean they don't sin.

Your post has asked for opinions.

Hello,
1st: It's my opinion that speaking in tongues ISN'T necessary or evidence of one's salvation. I would site a few scriptures here:

1 Corinthians 12:
1 "Now concerning spiritual gifts", brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
(NOTE: Spiritual gifts beyond salvation)

4 "Now there are diversities of gifts", "but the same Spirit".
(NOTE: Different gifts, all given by Gods Holy Spirit)

5 And there are differences of administrations (forms of stewardship), but the same Lord.
(NOTE: Eph 4:11-12 prophets, evangelist, pastors For the perfecting of the saints & works in ministry)

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.
(NOTE: The spiritual Body of Christ is comprised of MANY people/members)

21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

My point the Church/Body of Christ has many people & a variety of spiritual gifts. Everyone isn't called to be a pastor, everyone won't/doesn't receive the same gifts. Yet, we all have a function/purpose

In addition to 1 Cor chapter 12. A Prayerful study of Heb chapter 11 could be of value in answering your question.

Final thought:
Is you believe God has given you a gift. I think you should joyfully receive it. If we overstep any gift or vision/inspiration.

I believe God via his indwelling Holy Spirit (given to every believer at conversion) will reveal/nudge/lead/correct us to truth & repentance.

Keep up the search & good luck in finding (only you can) the correct answer. JJ

I don’t think you can be taught a spiritual gift, otherwise it wouldn’t be a gift. Bethel claims to teach people spiritual gifts, but I’ve seen the videos and some of them are quite horrific. Definitely steer clear of anything or anyone that claims they can teach you spiritual gifts.

You'll probably get a huge variety of opinions about this, as this can be a very controversial topic. However, I also am curious to know your motivation for getting this gift. Is it only to "prove" to yourself that you haven't committed the unpardonable sin? In that case, trying to get the gift would be a kind of compulsion, wouldn't it?

It's a gift of God, not required for Salvation and you don't receive it by watching a YouTube video...not sure that's what you meant.
I received the gift of speaking in tongues while watching a YouTube tutorial. I tried to speak gibberish before doing the tutorial and it did not work. But in the video this lady guided me in how to pray to God for the gift of tongues. I prayed along with her and was filled with the Holy Spirit (a gentle energy filled my entire body) and then I began speaking in tongues. Also recently I had one person interpret some of what I am saying while speaking in tongues, so I know it is real. Now I want the gift of interpretation so that I understand what the Holy Spirit is saying.

"Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. (I Cor 14:1).

"Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands by presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all." (I Tim 4:14-15). Prophesied in Mark 'And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;" (Mark 16:17).

Tongues are a sign to unbelievers spoken by believers. 'Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe." (I Cor 14:22).

"Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.' (I Cor 14).

There's a doctrine of baptisms,..." (Heb 6:2). There are 3 baptisms:

1 - By The Holy Spirit into Jesus is the baptism for salvation. Baptized into the body of Christ by believing in His death, burial, and resurrection.(Rev 1:5; Matt 26:28; Mark 1:4, 16:16; Luk 3:3; 1 Cor 12:13: Acts 2:38: Gal 3:27, +++) When we become believers then we are sealed with the Holy Spirit. (Eph 1:13, 4:30).

Water and Spirit baptism follows - not in a set order:
2 - By another believer (water baptism) (Matt 28:19, Matt 3:16, Acts 8:39).
3 - By Jesus with or into The Holy Spirit (The Spirit baptism) Believers already have the Holy Spirit but this baptism endures with power for witnessing and service. (Acts 1:5 8: Acts 8:14-17; 10:44-48,Matt 3:11; Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16; Acts 11:16++++)' Tongues can be given/spoken by all believers (Acts 2:4; 4:31; 10:44; 19:2, I Cor 14:22) but not all will be given the gift of interpretation of tongues. (Acts 2:4, I Cor 12:10, 30). Plus it was/is continous (Acts 4:31; 10:46, Eph 5:18-20, I Cor 14:4,5,15).

"And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one." (I John 5:7-8)

It's normal to be a little worried about your salvation, especially if you're a new Christian.

No, speaking in tongues does not prove that you are saved. I've seen plenty of people do it that I didn't believe were saved.

But it is very unlikely that you did any unpardonable sin. So I'd try not to worry about that too much.

I believe you will get your salvation. (Because I believe everybody will, but that is a minority position.)

To know whether you are saved or not right now I would have to know you better.

But if you went to Jesus and asked for it you can be sure that you will never be cast out.

I hope this helps and takes away some of your worry.

But yeah, if they don't know what they're saying, I guess that they can check the phone if they think about doing it.

Yeah, not like the guy is a conman and putting on a show for his listeners while being himself so jaded about his repeated fakery that even he got bored of it and just started doing something meaningful like checking if his village had been raided in Clash of Clans or something.

Can’t be that. Must just be enhanced spiritual gifts.

I'm saddened that what I posted resulted in the response above. Therefore, it would be considered that nothing of what either of us said is in any way edifying or helpful to the person of the OP.
I can erase my original post but I'm sorry that I can't delete the person's use of my quote.

Thank you. Another avenue for Gkst is posting in the Spirit Filled/Charismatic forum. Plus, there are 2 other forums that might interest you. On the forums page, 'locate 'Spiritual Growth" forum then click. "'Spiritual Gifts." There's also a subforum "Sign Gifts" available to you.

The advantage of these forums from my perspective is "...you make your post in a "safe house" such as Spiritual Gifts then it precludes people that do not believe in the gift (such as tongues) from teaching against them.." per Tampasteve.

bottomline: It helps communicating with others who believe in the spiritual gifts and know they're for today.
