Perhaps we should defund pest control.

There was a story just a couple of months ago about cats somewhere being adopted to control rats around restaurants, stores, etc. I think it was done by the private sector.

My cats won't eat mice they prefer cat food from a bag and laying around the house in the air conditioning.

Cats have gone soft. Wolves do a great job on rats, and have not had the softening of domestication. It's documented they do rodent control in the wild.

we've found they don't need any training at all, because when our cats first got outside, they caught birds and voles (like rats that in our yard live or hide a lot underground), without ever having any kind of example or training.

One thing that happens though with plenty of wild cats around an area is cat fights at night that are noisy, and also there can be plenty of meowing during certain times I remember. Lately we don't have that since we have a dog that is out a lot.

When they are hungry they ACT transformed though.
I guess if there is a lot of them, then they would get aggressive like other mammals that roam in packs.

Maybe I'm just lucky I've never had a pest in my house aside from the occasional bug. Even though my cats are like yours I wonder if just the presence of a cat is enough to keep most pests at bay. My sister in the other hand doesn't keep cats but instead has a useless tiny dog and has had rats in her house.

We have both dogs and cats, and once a cat managed to catch an juvenile squirrel somehow and brought it in through the dog door alive (and perhaps barely harmed at all). It escaped and we chased it for about 40 minutes, until it was quite secure behind or under the dryer. So we fed it almonds and got a humane trap (cage with a spring door), and finally caught it after about 2 days. When I released it, even when I'd barely unlocked the trap door, it burst through and scrambled 8 or 12 feet up a tree in just about 1 second, so fast it was hard to follow with your eyes.

Domesticated cats don’t eat their prey, but they do chase them and “play” with them, often resulting in the death of said prey.
Mine likes to bring home prey as a gift. Sometimes alive….

My wife is a bird fanatic. In the back yard, we have 4 finch feeders; 2 peanut feeders (one for shelled peanuts, one for peanuts in the shell) a cardinal and larger songbird feeder; 2 suet feeders (for winter use) and 2 hummingbird feeders. With all the dropped bird food and seed on the ground, we also have squirrels, chipmunks, possums, and raccoons. I often hear those last 2 at night fighting over what the birds haven’t eaten. And for the last couple of years, a groundhog has taken up residence under the deck. Which is a problem because their tunneling can weaken the deck supports. Every day at my house is Groundhog Day.

One of Mine brought in a live mouse to offer to me. Droped it on my chest at about 2 in the moring as I was sleeping.

I lived in fear after that. The cats talked to the dogs and the beta dog had caught a racoon and carried in his mouth like a cat carrying a mouse.

EDIT: When I was a teenager the one of the cats at my parent's house brought in a live snake. My folks woke me up because they did not know if it was poisonous or not. It was not, a ratehr pretty California Racer.

So I was at my body corp meeting yesterday, and of the many issues, one was left out catfood attracting rats, and another was pigeons roosting in the carpark making a mess on cars. One of the committee suggested killing two birds with one stone (pun intended) and asking the cat owners to not feed the cats for a day, then letting them loose in the carpark.
