Correct, anything can be improved on.

But not acknowledging that something as it is is also damn good as it is, though it could be improved upon, just creates a climate of constant bitterness, anger, strife, and perpetuates a pathlogical never ending search for a perfection that does not exist. Whatever happened to gratitude?

I am grateful for this country and what it offers. Last time I checked, millions of people are still clamoring to come in and be part of it.

Fair enough -- America's got some pretty good things going for it.

It's also got some garbage.

What say we keep the good, and toss out the trash, eh?

So what's the answer? If we take it down and give back the land to right the wrong will you then fight against the Sioux to make them right their wrongs. I don't see how we can fix the past by getting rid of everything.

Maybe...ask the Sioux whose land this actually was? Let them decide. If we ask nicely and NOT be our usual selves we can come to an agreement that is mutually acceptable to both parties.

But in the end, it's THEIR lands.

When I was doing geology training in the Black Hills I was constantly aware that I was in someone else's "church" banging away with a rock hammer. It's hard as a modern-day scientist to think of these places as some place that is beyond our "investigation" but for me the best answer would be the "middle path" the one in which we work with the local tribes (after we've established that we aren't like the countless generations of white people before us and can be trusted) to ensure that we both have access to the land. That, indeed, those of us who value this area (and the Black Hills is BEYOND beautiful) can all agree to share it. But it has to come from the position of those from whom we've taken the land (through no amount of bad dealings) and with their consent.

We humans actually CAN work together and share. It is hard to do but it can be done.

I think his supporters have shown a lot of restraint so far.

Opinions differ to some extent.

In America, you acknowledge we already have all the "good" things you listed.

Not as many and as much as we need, clearly.

So, pray tell, why are you so unhappy with America?

We can do better. We have 3rd-world levels of income inequality, we have one of the least accessible healthcare systems in the developed world. We have off-the-charts levels of gun violence and homicide. We are the only developed nation on earth that ROUTINELY has mass shootings. We have poverty that is unbefitting the "richest nation on earth". We lack good family leave, many jobs don't even have paid sick leave. We have employers who rake in MASSIVE profits while their employees are forced to use welfare and social services because they don't make enough to pay for basics.

Does THIS make you happy with America?

Yet he's president and they still want to be here.

So if you lived in a house with 4 other people and 2 of those people brought a skunk into the house and said "Deal with it". Would you say "Oh, well, I better go find a new home myself!" Or would you try to get rid of the skunk?

I would hope that one could reason with the folks wishing to keep the skunk. But still get rid of the skunk! :)
One would hope.

But when they only watch tv shows with a pro-skunk agenda, and one of them has staked her very identity on having the skunk around ....?

What is the "best" country to you?

There isn't one. All countries have relative strengths and weaknesses.

I think Canada is quite awesome, but I don't think we're the "best" as a country. There are a lot of things we could still improve on.

The US is the BEST country to me. For now. Who knows what it might be 5 years from now if the left gets its way.

When looking at objective measures, countries with greater socialist policies (e.g. Canada, various European countries) tend to rank higher than the U.S. in various categories.

So if the left does get their way in the U.S. perhaps the U.S. would improve in those areas.

The problem with thinking the U.S. is already the "best" is that there is no reason to try to improve those things.

Doesn’t matter anymore. Every statue represents racism now. They tried to destroy an elk statue in Oregon.
Crazy. The elks have done a lot of charitable work.

The US is the BEST country to me. For now. Who knows what it might be 5 years from now if the left gets its way.

If the left gets its way the horrors will be immense:

1. Accessible affordable healthcare
2. Expanded family leave
3. Improved social safety net
4. Racial equity
5. Reduction in gun violence, gun deaths and mass shootings.

I honestly can't think of a worse place to live than a place that has all that! YIKES

I don't believe they got rid of the statue because it was racist but rather that its base had been damaged by the protests.

But it does bring up a great point: Oregon has a very long and rich history of being one of the most racist states in the Union! It used to be illegal to be black and live in Oregon. But Oregon isn't that kind of place anymore....it's rather progressive (at least in the western side, Willamette Valley). It's still got its problems like all states do. And it is hard for minorities in Oregon because there hasn't been a long-standing presence of minorities. We can do better. We WILL do better.

Comrade, what is problem? Same goal as last time. Minus plague and things.

Probably "WINNING". We got so much winning these past 3 years it's hard to imagine we'd be able to get more, but then in his first term he did promise we'd get tired of "winning" so much. And indeed many of us are EXTREMELY tired of "winning".

Well, the sculptor was a white supremacist, anti-semite, and quite the buddy with the KKK...

But I guess some history is best forgotten, eh?
If I was a Democrat I would want to erase my racist history too.
