Trump Uses Mount Rushmore Speech to Deliver Divisive Culture War Message

With the coronavirus pandemic raging and his campaign faltering in the polls, his appearance amounted to a fiery reboot of his re-election effort, using the holiday and an official presidential address to mount a full-on culture war against a straw-man version of the left that he portrayed as inciting mayhem and moving the country toward totalitarianism.

“Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values and indoctrinate our children,” Mr. Trump said, addressing a packed crowd of sign-waving supporters, few of whom wore masks. “Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.”

Oh, Donald... always ready to protect America from... Americans.

Well, the DNC has explained that Mount Rushmore is a "white supremacist" monument.

So "tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials" is not actually all that far wrong.

The Sioux, for whom the Black Hills is sacred ground, have been actively at war with the US in the 20th century. So it's not like this is an accepted "thing" for them.

It's actually kind of interesting doing geology field work in parts of South Dakota. There are areas you go into and realize that these are still actively used for ritual for the Native Americans. These are sacred lands to them.

Don't get me wrong: I love Mt Rushmore, it's beautiful. And amazing. But it is kind of an affront to people. Kind of like someone coming in and carving their graffitti on OUR most precious cathedrals (say, like Notre Dame or Chartres).

It is our privilege to assume that Mt. Rushmore is just fine. It is not necessarily so.

Maybe these people you think "hate" America actually want America to be as good as it can be. But what they hate is what people like Trump have brought to the fore as "virtue".

And many of us are quite well educated with good jobs meaning we probably pay more in taxes than most of Trump's most ardent supporters (outside of the business people he services), so in a sense we have the RIGHT to demand more from America than we see.

Indoctrinate our children? This from the guy that enthusiastically supports taxpayer dollars going to religious schools?

Trump is yet again pandering to his dwindling, ignorant base but I think even some of them will know they are being conned and this is just a shallow and cheap attempt at imaging.

Its not a left wing cultural revolution. Its an American revolution. Trump and many others love to divide America up as many ways as they can

I do agree there is many things wrong with this American revolution but removing Confederate statues and pushing towards racial equality are not amongst them

You with the supposedly well educated good jobs, don't be surprised when they come for you too!

Oh really? How would you know? If you are an American all the "good" things you enjoy (5 day work weeks, minimum wage, social security, unemployment, worker safety, consumer safety) all came from that same approach. In fact you have never lived in any other kind of America (unless you are 120+ years old).
