Given that USA is in the midst of a national disaster and have a current president who is completely ignoring it and refusing to support measures to fight the disease such as promoting use of masks, promoting social distancing etc.

There is a long way to go until November and this disease spreads exponentially.

Would it be possible in the next four months for the Republican party to throw Trump out. Instil a new president that is capable of getting this disease under control and save the lives of tens or hundreds of thousands of Americans and then win the 2020 election?

Or would it be too little, too late? Or perhaps just constitutionally not legal?

If they want to commit political suicide, sure, go for it. The Republicans would get rid of all trust their base had for them and create a viable third party. Might actually be good since the Republicans by in large are cowards.

I would much rather prefer Trump up his performance which has been quite shoddy as of late.

The president can't make the states do whatever he wants. So the presidential power is limited in any case. For instance virtually no states are even following the federal guidelines Trump issued a couple of months ago. We aren't New Zealand.

It's too late.
I really want to see him voted out. I'll feel bad for his supporters but not him, not for one minute.

My state of Colorado has been closely following those guidelines. We want to get up and running again and not have to shut back down.

It would involve a tremendous loss of face that I doubt many within the GOP would countenance. If it begins to look like he's leading them to a major loss there would be a lot of damage control to consider in putting him out to pasture. Anyone else might be happy with a ringing endorsement, plaudits from party bigwigs and some manufactured excuse for the exit, but Trump's ego is so enormous nothing would make up for the loss of power. He'd do his best to create a huge mess on the way out, and they know it.

The could, but its incredibly doubtful they would.

Trump is incredibly popular with Republican voters. Over the first half of 2020, his approval rating with registered Republicans was 91%. The needle barely moved with his handling of the coronavirus pandemic - with approval down about 5-6% from the start of the year.

Of course, Trump's approval with Democratic voters is very much lower - somewhere around 10%.

The key is independent voters - those with no party affiliation. Their approval ratings for Trump have slumped about 10% over the past three months, with only about 33% now approving of the job he's doing as president. Some recent polls put this as low as 25%.

They question is though - will enough independents vote to make this matter?

How, they'd have to impeach him and another trial or try to say that he isn't physically or mentally stable and use the 25th Amendment, Section 4 under incompetency.

There isn't a mechanism like a vote of no confidence, or something like that? Not that they'd do anything so public. I suppose a few quiet words in the back room, like retiring a dog that won't stop worrying the sheep instead of putting it down, would be unlikely to work with Trump, unless they can devise some way to build a massive ego boost into it.

Maybe with people staying at home for so many months, they have been paying more attention than they usually do and are more engaged than usual.

Great idea...!

‘Donald, we want to make you the Eternal Head of State for the USA. It will mean you have to step down from your present role, but it will mean that you will be a figurehead for our country forever......whaddyathink...?’

They'd have to bribe him with something, maybe they'd promise to put his name in big letters on the border fence/wall.

When you find that person that can solve all the problems let us know in the mean time many of us do not blame Trump for every bad thing in the world.

I don't know. I don't know enough about the USA system.

But lets say that 10's of thousands of Americans are dying and the president has decided inaction.
Let's say others in his party believe that actions could be taken to save 10's of thousands of lives.
What can they do, such that their party remains in power and yet they take over leadership and save the people.

If they succeeded, surely the people would consider them heroes or saviours, surely they would win votes for the next election assuming they could do all this in the next four months.

The only threat really, would be if the die hard Republican voters abandoned ship and voted for Trump as an independant. Would Trump be able to put himself on the 2020 ballot as an independant?
If he couldn't, would his die hard voters let the Dems win the election or would they support the Republican party?

If the Republican party truely felt they could take action to save thousands of lives but it would cost them the next election, what would they do? would they save the lives or would they stand by and support their current inactive leader?

What you are suggesting here would be a major gift to Biden. The Republican party has no option other than uniting around Trump.

My only interest at this stage is how can thousands of lives be saved?
Obviously the Dems can't do it because they are not in power, they can't overthrow Trump.

Only the Repubs can do it (maybe). If they could, would they?
Could they do it and win the next election?
Or would they do it even if it meant lossing the next election?

My assumption of course, is that something major can be done to change the trajectory of this USA disaster and the other assumption is that Trump is the obstacle stopping people from doing that something.
I could be wrong on those assumptions, anyway, just wondering out loud if Republican party members might have the power to be able to do something.

Well since the state governors are making mostly all of the decisions, I do not think that Trump has that much to do with the spread of the virus.

I think you’re giving the GOP way too much credit there. As a party they’ve made their priorities clear, and there’s little in there to suggest that the well-being of the average citizen is even a consideration.
