He grew up in a gentrified neighborhood with only a few African-American residents, but after confessing that he’s always felt uneasy walking alone on its streets, his faith in humanity was restored by dozens of neighbors who walked with him in solidarity.

The 29-year-old has lived in the 12 South neighborhood of Nashville his whole life, after his family moved there 54 years ago. But over the course of his life, Shawn Dromgoole has seen the neighborhood change dramatically.

Rising home values priced out many of the black families who lived there. As they moved out to find more affordable housing, new families moved in, most of them white and more financially well-off—leaving Shawn feeling out of place in his hometown.

I'm sorry, but this is news?

What about the hundreds of children that get killed just walking around neighbourhoods that haven't been "gentrified"?

Given all the bad news lately concerning race, yep, this is a bit of good news.

If a bunch of neighbors, 75 in all, whom I suppose he was afraid of, volunteered to walk with him then apparently his fears were unfounded! Since so many reached out to him I wonder if he ever took the time to try to be neighborly?
What I would fear as a black man would be walking down the streets in certain black neighborhoods in cities like Chicago where he might be feeling lead instead of as he claims feeling the eyes of his neighborhood!

They certainly were. In fact, within hours of him reaching out to his neighbours, he was surrounded by a supportive crowd.

With considerable justification.

I'm still not sure why we're pretending that friendly middle-class neighbourhoods are the problem, when the real problem neighbourhoods are the ones where people are getting shot by the hundreds.

As a general rule, they are not a "problem" for most people. But he could be remembering another young man jogging in another "friendly middle class neighborhood" who was gunned down by over zealous neighbors who pegged him as a criminal. The fact that his neighbors reached out to him is a beautiful thing. They probably put his fears to rest. People get shot in "problem neighborhoods" that is true. But people should not expect to get shot walking in "friendly middle class neighborhoods". Right?

If you are referring to Satilla Shores, GA, that is hardly a "middle class neighborhood."

He wasn't gunned down while jogging. He was gunned down while attacking the man with the gun.

Wow! How in the world did you flip that? He attacked the man with the gun ? The man who chased him down? So, in your opinion,he deserved to be gunned down in this friendly middle class neighborhood where these friendly neighbors chased him down with a gun? Umm hmm. Yeah, right.

Yes, and so did the GBI. Three men have been charged with murder.
So you saw what I'm saying - Arbery charged at McMichaels and grabbed the gun trying to take it from him.

In Arbery's place, what would you have done? Can you even imagine being a black man with three angry white men chasing you down with guns?

Is there evidence they were angry? I haven't heard it. I would either have ignored them, or tried to talk to them and ask them why they were following me, or run away from them. The last thing any jogger would do is charge directly at a man with a shotgun and try to take it away. I don't mean to speak ill of the deceased, but that was just the most foolish thing possible.

Not even if your life was being threatened?

That video has nothing to do with whether they were angry, as you say they were.
Youj don't know what they said to him.
Neither do you.

We don't know that his life was being threatened. I'd assume it wasn't, because if they wanted to just murder him they'd have already done it. Why wait and give your murder victim the chance to get up close and attack you?

Can you imagine the tone McMichaels used when sayin the racial slur? I doubt if it was kind or friendly. And If they were not angry, why did they hunt him down. They hunted him to kill him. Otherwise, they would not have needed guns for a nice friendly neighborly chat.

You don't have to be angry to say the word, if he did. May not be friendly, but anyway you said he was being chased by angry men, and he said that after the shooting. I'd be angry if someone attacked me, too.

Think of what you're saying. They hunted him to kill him, in broad daylight on a residential street. And one of "they" was video recording it. If you were planning to murder someone, would you video record it?
