This week, while blocking police reform, the House voted to make Washington DC the 51st State.

House approves statehood for DC in 232-180 vote

They did not even get all their party to vote on the bill, which is dead on arrival in the Senate.

why waste the time debating and voting on something that will never get passed and stonewalling a bill that the nation is calling for.

My Opinion: This is why we need to do everything we can to make sure we get back the House.

If Republicans had had the House, Police reform would be being enacted.
Everyone, including the police forces, would rather see them do it right rather than too quickly and not include what really needs to be included to help the police forces across the nation. Did you watch the Senate Judiciary hearing that I posted on this subject?

If Congress doesn't do the simple things that the police have asked for then they shouldn't do anything except a few things like banning chokeholds which many states have already done.

Actually, this was not a waste to democrats. It was a preview of what is to come if the President and Senate turn in the next election.

There is a reason why House bills get stalled in the Senate. His name is Mitch McConnell, and the lucky people of Kentucky have an opportunity to put him out to pasture this November.

If he doesn't like a bill and thinks it could squeak through (on the infrequent days that Susan Collins decides to use her conscience) it never sees the light of day. Not to mention his failure to allow any Obama judicial appointments to come up for a vote--whether for the Supreme Court or the lower courts--for a whole UNPRECEDENTED year, hoping that a Republican would win the election.

Yes, Congress needs to change. For those who have a chance, vote out McConnell, Lindsay Graham, Martha McSally, and several others. McConnell subverts the political process and, along with AG Barr, is a Trump accomplice.

The odds of the GOP winning anything thia November are slim to none. DC statehood, along with its name change, may well he passed next year by a Democrat Congress and signed by Biden. It's unconstitutional of course but the Constitution ceases to exist as a meaningful document at this point. DC statehood guarantees the Republicans nwver control the Senate again.

Since D.C. has a larger population of people than Wyoming and Vermont, there is a pretty good argument that those folks deserve representation in Congress. Other than the fact that they would be a majority black state, I guess.

It's unconstitutional of course

The Constitution gives Congress the ability to set its own conditions for admitting a state. Under the Admission Clause, "New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union."

An American Civil Liberties Union analysis of the bill found it "permissible" based on constitutional interpretations. "It complies with the District and Federal Enclaves Clause, the Admission Clause, and the Twenty-Third Amendment," the ACLU concluded.
DC statehood: Congress considering Washington as 51st state

Since the First Amendment gives Congress power over things like choosing how presidential electors are chosen from D.C. Congress could simply determine that it would be done as chosen by the voters of D.C. Which is perfectly Constitutional, since it would be the decision of Congress, needing no other authority.

Constitutional scholars disagree.

DC statehood guarantees the Republicans nwver control the Senate again.

Looking at the dumpster fire this administration has become, that might be unnecessary.

Constitutional scholars do not agree that DC can be made a state. There are two schools of thought on the matter. Personally, I would rather see DC returned to Maryland and Virginia with the exception of Federal buildings which would be subject to exclusive Federal control and regulation.

There are some who disagree that it can. But a strict reading of the Constitution shows that Congress has the exclusive power to determine that.

Except that doesn't consider the Federal district requirement.

Sure it does. It's just that the government of that is up to Congress, which can change it as it desires.
That view goes completely against Federalist 43 and the original intent of the Constitution

After blocking debate
on a Republican policing bill, Senate Democrats have called for the Judiciary Committee to debate both the Republican and Democratic bills in order to craft a bipartisan version. But the chair of that committee, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Thursday that would be a waste of time and police reform "seems to be" a dead issue in the Senate.

can you tell us why the Senate Judiciary committee isn't working on a police reform bill?

The Democrats retook the House by a swing of 40 seats - that was before the George Floyd protests, the COVID-19 pandemic and 40+ million unemployed!

This President has defied the laws of probability by taking positions that have proven to be consistently on the wrong side of every one of these issues - the voting public has no reason to believe that his track-record will improve in the foreseeable future!
