Trump administration now says he was not told Russia was paying bounties to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan

Outrage has greeted media reports that American officials believe a Russian intelligence unit offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing foreign soldiers in Afghanistan, including targeting Americans.

The story first appeared in the New York Times, citing its sources as unnamed officials briefed on the matter, and followed up by the Washington Post. The reports said that the US had come to the conclusion about the operation several months ago and that Russia had offered rewards for successful attacks last year.

The Times wrote: “The intelligence finding was briefed to Trump, and the White House’s National Security Council discussed the problem at an interagency meeting in late March.” White House officials apparently drew up several possible options to retaliate against the Kremlin, ranging from a diplomatic reprimand right through to fresh sanctions. However, the White House has so far not taken any action.

It is not clear if bounties were ever paid out for successfully killing American soldiers. The White House denied that either Trump or the vice-president, Mike Pence, were briefed on such a matter.

Who actually believes Trump didn't know about this? Who in the government would be reckless enough to hide something of this importance from the president? No, the Trump campaign reckons that it's better to think of him as no longer in control of things, than to think that he knew of this while he was lobbying to have Russia reinstated to the Group of Seven.

It's been common knowledge, since the begging of the cold war that Russia and the US have both been paying foreigners to kill for them.
They don't advertise this secret strategy, but it is well known by both sides.

Russia suffered massive losses, when the US armed Afghanistan and gave them access to it's satellite's to destroy the Russians. We would be naive, to think the Russia would just forget the 15,000 dead and 35,000 wounded.

Trump is no friend of Russia, but he has to deal with the Devil to avoid an all out nuclear war with the evil empire.

Just a hint, he was not told because this report is a lie. the president is not briefed on NYT lies, it would take far too much time out of his day.

A better question might be who actually believes it even happened. And perhaps what makes you believe it ever happened.

I note that now three independent sources have. And I also note that the Trump administration is not denying the finding. Trump says it's not reliable. But then he told us that the Russians didn't interfere in the 2016 presidential elections, too. He said he didn't believe our intelligence people, because Putin told him there was no interference.

So taking that for what it's worth.

As John Bolton wrote in his book, Trump looked at every piece of information he received in the light of his reelection.

And as long as it wasn't linked to his negligence, how many American soldiers were killed--or by whom--had absolutely no bearing on his reelection. He may have heard it and filed it away as irrelevant.

Now, of course, it is relevant to his reelection. It will be interesting to see how many Republican legislators will defend him, and that will hopefully be very relevant to their reelections.

It took 2 days before the White House could make a response - combined with Trump's "White Power" tweet," this was the 2nd time over the weekend that the President has played the "I didn't know" card!

Last week he played that card once again when he stated he had no knowledge of the dismissal of DOJ US Attorney Denison - despite the fact that he was actively investigating the President and his associates and Trump was the only one with the authority to terminate him!

Given that Presidents are supposed to be briefed daily, why is he so "uninformed?"

It is sad that folks do have such a low standard of bearing witness but the Radicle, destroy the US Democrats of today, such as the Hate-Monger you Gents are dealing with here need to be in prison and then given a row boat, mid-Pacific, and abandoned. All the years I have tried to converse intelligently with this DNC Regurgitator have come to naught. Lack of intelligence? I don't know but he claims to be a teacher... teacher of what? Nothing American Christian that I have seen. But he does enjoy the platform you afford him. There's a thought.

Can't agree with you at all. From where I'm sitting, our people are the good guys, and Putin and his agents who put bounties out for killing American troops are the bad guys.

We'll just have to disagree on that.

Your concern is premature. It looks like America is regaining its identity and values:

Well if Marxism, or Socialism or Communism is what the values of this nation are then we are moving in the right direction. Some of us do not want to go along for the ride, we believe in this nation and the values that should be held by it citizens.
