The toddler was killed in Chicago's street gang wars, one of more than 100 people shot over the weekend in the city, with 12 of those shot younger than 18. Included among the dead were two boys coming home after getting candy at a neighborhood store, a 13-year-old girl and Mekhi James.

The spike in violence in Chicago and other Democratic Party-controlled big cities, from New York to Los Angeles, is a function of street gangs, drug wars and politics. The elected social justice warriors demand little or no bail for the violent who are released back onto the streets. Broken public school systems serve power interests, not the poor. Tax policy kills business and job opportunities in troubled neighborhoods. In urban America, Democrats have no competition. And all that matters to the political class is counting the votes.
Hits the nail on the head....

From the same article:

In Cook County, the political class allows electronic home monitoring to be used for those arrested for murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and rape.

"There are too many violent offenders not in jail, or on electronic home monitoring, which no one is really monitoring," said Chicago police Superintendent David Brown. "We need violent felons to stay in jail longer."

But they don't. The politics won't allow it.

And Chicago's river of violence sweeps another child away.

Obviously, for you it's about politics, let me know when it's actually about the children, their parents, their community.

I read a report 2-3 years ago. I think it came from the Census Bureau and it claimed that Blacks were starting to leave Chicago and moving to Atlanta, Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul. If true, I think we can assume that the persistent crime problem in Chicago is the main reason for their flight.

ok

You lost me when you said Democrats. I think the problem is deeper than party affiliation.

I did not write the article - I said nothing about Democrats - the article did.

Chicago isn't even #1 the dangerous crime city, they're way down the list at #64 by some statistics.

It is about politics, why are the political leaders in Chicago doing anything to resolve this problem?

That may well be true, but is still misleading. If you ignore the North, NorthWest and SouthWest sides of Chicago and only consider the South and West sides, then the crime rate is much higher than the Chicago average.
It would be the same in all the rest of these cities.

It's true of most cities. They all have safer areas, and more violent areas. It's just that Chicago is relatively safer than a lot of other U.S. cities.

My youngest daughter lives in the St. Louis area; some places therein being much more dangerous than any precinct in Chicago. But her particular community is one of the safest in the United States.

Lots of them have Democratic mayors. Many are solid red Republican states.

The ten most dangerous states in the United States:
Rank State Violent Crime Rate Per 100,000 Inhabitants
1 Alaska 804
2 New Mexico 703
3 Nevada 678
4 Tennessee 633
5 Louisiana 566
6 Arkansas 551
7 Alabama 532
8 Missouri 519
9 Delaware 509
10 South Carolina 502
The Most Dangerous States in the United States

Pretty much what you'd expect. One blue state, #9, Delaware.

New Mexico is blue now too.
But when you look at the most dangerous cities the mayors are almost all blue.

Purple, perhaps, and I suspect only because Trump is a republican. Yes, cities tend to elect democrats and cities also tend to be crowded and more violent.

As I was saying about the dangerous cities, it makes sense that the largest cities are the most dangerous. Here's a list of the 100 largest cities and their mayors.
64 are blue, 29 are red, 3 are Ind., and 4 are non-partisan

Actually, middle-sized cities are as likely to be the really bad ones...

1 Anniston Alabama 34.34297427
2 Bessemer Alabama 29.85584219
3 Florida City Florida 22.75890299
4 McKeesport Pennsylvania 21.25423891
5 St. Louis Missouri 20.82285906
6 Detroit Michigan 20.56673306
7 Baltimore Maryland 20.27014907
8 Memphis Tennessee 20.0332432
9 Camden County New Jersey 19.67725003
10 Opa Locka Florida 19.49844012
Top 100 Most Dangerous Cities in America | National Council For Home Safety and Security

The top four most dangerous are medium-sized cities, and six of the top ten are medium-sized.

I see Camden, the city that replaced their police several years ago made the list.

Yes.
What Happened to Crime in Camden?

Often ranked as one of the deadliest cities in America, Camden, New Jersey, ended 2017 with its lowest homicide rate since the 1980s.
...
After a particularly deadly year in 1995, Camden’s Cathedral of Immaculate Conception began illuminating one candle for each homicide victim. In 2012, the year ended with 67 candles—a rate of about 87 murders per 100,000 residents, which ranked Camden fifth nationwide.

But on New Year’s 2018, just 22 candles were lit: The city’s murder rate fell to its lowest since 1987. The number of annual killings has been in decline since 2012; so have robberies, aggravated assaults, violent crimes, property crimes, and non-fatal shooting incidents.

So what’s happening in this city, which for many years has been deemed among the dangerous in America? Thomson, who took the helm of the Camden police force in 2008, says the biggest factor may have been the change in structure of the department itself. In 2013, the Camden Police Department was disbanded, reimagined, and born again as the Camden County Police Department, with more officers at lower pay—and a strategic shift toward “community policing.”
Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Reforming the police department led to precipitous drops in violent crime.

Notice this isn't "defunding" police; it's firing everyone, rehiring those without histories of needless violence, and rebuilding the department. It worked.

and who can say that it was due to the reforms, it still a long way from what it could or should be.
