“The U.S. raised expectations by offering suggestions like a flexible approach, new method and creative solutions, but they have disappointed us greatly and dampened our enthusiasm for negotiation by bringing nothing to the negotiation table,” [DPRK chief nuclear negotiator] said.

“The U.S. brought creative ideas and had good discussions with its DPRK counterparts,” [US] spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

Since June, U.S. officials had struggled to persuade North Korea to return to the table, but that appeared to change this week when North Korea abruptly announced it had agreed to hold talks.

North Korea said on Tuesday that it’s up to the U.S. to choose what “Christmas gift” it wants from Pyongyang as an end-of-year deadline for nuclear talks inches closer.

“The dialogue touted by the U.S. is, in essence, nothing but a foolish trick hatched to keep the DPRK bound to dialogue and use it in favor of the political situation and election in the U.S.,” Ri said in comments reported by state media, using the acronym for North Korea's official name. “What is left to be done now is the U.S. option and it is entirely up to the U.S. what Christmas gift it will select to get.”

Hope it's not a mushroom cloud in Uncle Sam's stocking.

On the plus side, there is no War on Christmas in North Korea.

North Korea to sever hotlines with South Korea in first step to cut contact

The decision, announced by the KCNA state news agency, marks a new setback amid stalled efforts to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Whoaaaa, I wonder why...

Thread title: "North Korea breaks off nuclear talks with US"

Then:
“[snip] but that appeared to change this week when North Korea abruptly announced it had agreed to hold talks.

If I didn't know better I would think that the thread was misleading. Perhaps you could change the title to, "North Korea agrees to hold talks after a period of tension"

If I didn't know better I would think that the thread was misleading.

It appeared to change this week [well, some week last October], but then...

"Working-level nuclear talks in Sweden between officials from Pyongyang and Washington have broken off, North Korea’s top negotiator said late on Saturday, dashing prospects for an end to months of stalemate."

But the President promised something..... He and Kim were friends......

I think the friendship is off.

North Korea said it was pulling away from its relationship with the U.S. two years after a historic handshake between President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, in Singapore, saying there had been no actual improvement in ties.

"Never again will we provide the U.S. chief executive with another package to be used for achievements without receiving any returns," North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Son Gwon said on state-run KCNA.

"Nothing is more hypocritical than an empty promise."

Kim Jong Un’s sister threatens S. Korea with military action
The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened military action against South Korea as she bashed Seoul on Saturday over declining bilateral relations ...

Describing South Korea as an “enemy,” Kim Yo Jong repeated an earlier threat she had made by saying Seoul will soon witness the collapse of a “useless” inter-Korean liaison office in the border town of Kaesong.

Kim, who is first vice department director of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, said she would leave it to North Korea’s military leaders to carry out the next step of retaliation against the South.

“By exercising my power authorized by the supreme leader, our party and the state, I gave an instruction to the arms of the department in charge of the affairs with enemy to decisively carry out the next action,” she said in a statement carried by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency.

“If I drop a hint of our next plan the (South Korean) authorities are anxious about, the right to taking the next action against the enemy will be entrusted to the General Staff of our army,” she said. “Our army, too, will determine something for cooling down our people’s resentment and surely carry out it, I believe.”

Kim’s harsh rhetoric demonstrates her elevated status in North Korea’s leadership. Already seen as the most powerful woman in the country and her brother’s closest confidant, state media recently confirmed that she is now in charge of relations with South Korea.

North Korea to resume military exercises on border with South Korea

North Korea said Wednesday that it will send soldiers to now-shuttered inter-Korean cooperation sites in its territory and reinstall guard posts and resume military exercises at front-line areas, nullifying tension-reducing deals reached with South Korea just two years ago.

The announcement is the latest in a series of provocations North Korea has taken in what experts believe are calculated moves to apply pressure on Seoul and Washington amid stalled nuclear negotiations. On Tuesday, the North destroyed an empty inter-Korean liaison office in its territory.

The North also said it would resume military exercises, reestablish guard posts and boost military readiness in border areas as well as open front-line sites for flying propaganda balloons toward South Korea. Those steps would reverse agreements reached between the Koreas in September 2018 aimed at lowering military tensions along the border.

South Korea’s military expressed regret over the North Korean announcement and warned that the North would face unspecified consequences if it violates the 2018 deals.

North Korean forces shoot and kill South Korean official who crossed maritime border into North Korea.

According to Lt. Gen. Ahn Young-ho, a top official with South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, a staffer with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries went missing in waters 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) south of the Yeonpyeong Islands on September 21.

The islands lie near the maritime border between North and South Korea, and at some point, the official crossed into North Korean waters, after which, according to South Korean intelligence, North Korean forces opened fire, killing the South Korean. They later burned his body, Ahn said.

Tensions have been rising between North and South Korea since communication between the two sides was cut off in June, when Pyongyang first closed and then blew up a joint liaison office in Kaesong, a city on the northern side of the border.

From June of 2019

Seems to be a mosh mash of articles over a number of years.

What is happening currently?

From June of 2020 in the last four months had any of this happened? No?

I don't have a problem with trying diplomatic solutions first but at some point we are going to have to use force.

Did anyone bother to look at crop yields for North Korea and China lately?

They both are running headlong into winter and spring with no where near enough groceries.

Gonna be an outright famine.

It's posturing to get some free food and gimmies and yet not doing anything of substance one way or another.
