I ran out from work just to grab a soda for a caffeine jolt. Waiting in line in front of this kid no older than 21. He was mangy looking yapping on his phone with his mask down. He was buying peanut butter , jelly and some Slim Jims. The transaction was taking forever and he wouldn't stop yapping on the phone.

He is using this card.

It is an EBT welfare card the state gives to those on assistance. Finally the card goes through then he starts buying scratch tickets with cash. A 5 dollar and a few 2 dollar ones and some rolling papers.

I was having bad thoughts about making a comment out-loud. He knew I was getting peeved. He said "sorry man"

I get to pay cash and also pay for his junk food and assorted other junk with my tax money.
I am thankful I have a job . I just don't think it is right that we have to pay for his items and he has discretionary cash to buy scratch tickets and papers to smoke weed.

It would be more of a problem if he'd never worked a day in his life. If he's worked in the past, and will work in the future, then he's only spending his own money.

I've paid off every benefit I've ever claimed about thirty times over.

Did you buy scratch tickets and rolling papers? If so I am mad at you. lol

At least the peanut butter was relatively healthy. The rest of it is his privilege kindly granted by the state of MA. Don't be mad at him. He's only doing what's allowed him. It's the folks the voters send to state government you should be mad at. Or maybe the voters themselves.

I agree I was just venting. There is plenty of work in Massachusetts. He seemed to not have a skill set but there is a ton of retail work available.

I would rather pay him money to find a job skill and clean up. I am all for that.

I used to go to the cash and carry and weigh out my own rice - I distinctly remember (on several occasions) having to fish out a few grains with the scoop, because my weight put me a few pence over.

That was probably the healthiest I've ever been. All I ate was oatmeal, rice and coley fillets for about 18 months. I MIGHT have splashed out on a bottle of gold top milk once a month, y'know, when I was flush lol.

I learned a lot during that time - found my faith too.

Yeah, it's his money (actually he's a steward of the Creator's resources), it will come out of his social security.

If you don't work you don't have social security. If you have an EBT debit card your not working.

One could have worked quite a bit before and may work until retirement after. Either way, the state finds a way to get it out of EBT recipients...don't feel like you are losing out on something.

I don't think you get my point. In Massachusetts there is widespread welfare fraud. Last year there were arrests with people possessing multiple Mass Health Care cards and trading Wic vouchers as well as EBT cards. It costs the tax payers millions so it does concern me.

So if I see a young kid with an EBT debit card buying scratch tickets and rollings papers which indicates he might also have purchased weed it does concern me. Call me crazy.

So, it concerns you, because this is your money he is using--does it concern you otherwise?

It was his whole demeanor, standing at the registering with his mask off talking loud on the phone and causing drama with what should have been a simple transaction. Causing me and another person in line to have to wait. And yes the money concerns me . We pay very high taxes in Massachusetts.
