Tear gas and stun grenades? Honestly, I'm shocked and deeply shaken that anybody would think this is the way to treat clergy ministering on their own church's steps.

Is this what we've come to? How do we, as a church, respond to what's just happened to our own people?

I have just posted that material in another thread.

Should George Floyd be breathing today? Yes. Why isn't he. Because 4 Law Enforcement personnel exceeded their mandate, in a way that repulsed most reasonable people in the world. The streets of the USA today are telling us that it is time to address the issues. More Force will not fix the problem. Domination won't fix the problem.

The 35th President of the United States said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” and whilst he misattributed the source, the truth holds.

Things that will help fix the problem include, love, listening and respect for each other.

Justice is not about brutal enforcement of the rule of law. Justice is about fairness, and that includes equitable distribution of the communities resources, equitable access to justice, education, and the right to be heard.

I guess I am glad that 45th potus was not holding up the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, however I would be comforted to know that he had read it.

The police have said numerous times now it was not tear gas and it was not to get people out of the way of the President but because the rioters were going places the were not suppose to.

I think we respond by speaking up, and saying, "Enough is enough." We respond by reclaiming the Christian faith from those who wrap themselves in Christianity while proclaiming this man as the Christian choice. He does not represent my faith. We shout from the rooftops that this isn't the way of Jesus.

It has become personal for me. It's Episcopal, so it's my church. I have long held an affection for St. John's, Lafayette Square for other reasons. I used to get to D.C. occasionally for business. When the day was done I liked to traipse around the city with a camera and tripod shooting monuments and architecture lit up after dark. St. John's is something to see after dark. One might find 15 t0 20 homeless sleeping on its patio and under its porch. I always thought that is the kind of refuge a church should be...a safe, welcoming, nurturing place for all people. If I was homeless in D.C., I'd sleep at St. John's.

Since one can be anonymous on CF i am more vocal here about things political than I allow myself to be anywhere else in my life. No more. I am Christian, and I'm speaking up. This is not the way of Jesus.

I have not heard that, however the optics I saw on several news outlets showed what appeared to be teargas and stun grenades being used, along with police on horseback, and an aggressive pushback.

I am not sure why Episcopal Clergy on the steps of St John's Washington were deemed to be going places they were not supposed to be. I wonder if you are singing from the Presidents Hymn Book?

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to the prisoners;
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;

And, we ask where was love incarnate on that day, on the steps of St John's tending to those in trouble, those wanting to see and the breath, or sometime later on the steps of St John's holding a Bible saying dominate. As Anglicans we have often been accused of Erastianism. But No More.

Those Christians don't make a habit of evaluating and denouncing the legitimacy of the faith of Christians who don't support the duly elected president of our country, however.

Tear gas was not used to clear protesters for Trump: US Park Police

The rioters were throwing things and being combative. It was decided early in the day to extend the border around the WH park but it had not been done and Barr told them to widen the perimeter. Nothing to do with the President.

It was the history of that Church. Not much else.

They used gas but not tear gas, not every gas they use is tear gas. I know in the heat of he situation the opposition sees it that way. Heck when something happens to any of us the first thing we think is it was real bad

If they say this, it is a lie. I witnessed the entire proceedings ...

What do you think of the account of the bishop who was there?

My takeaway from this thread: if you're liberal and run into police brutality, you are either (1) obviously unruly and in the wrong because the police said so, (2) "playing the victim" by actually saying anything, or (3) hysterical and not to be trusted with your account of your own experiences.

Very disappointing, especially in light of how this started.

They used gas but not tear gas,
While pepper balls and smoke canisters were used against the protesters, "no tear gas was used by USSP officers or other assisting law enforcement partners to close the area at Lafayette Park.
Acting Chief Gregory T. Monahan of the United States Park Police

Oddly enough I will accept that, and I can understand how the optics gave one to understand that it was tear gas, and I have no doubt that was the intended perception as they sought to dominate.

Heck when something happens to any of us the first thing we think is it was real bad

I do hope you are not trying to suggest it was all OK and quite simply the President went for a walk in the park. Sadly I don't think it was all OK. What I saw, admitedly from the other side of the Pacific Ocean, suggested that it was real bad. Some this may be cultural, because Australians are not used to seeing policing in this form.

Lets hope we will all be able to breath for some time to come.

Tear gas and stun grenades? Honestly, I'm shocked and deeply shaken that anybody would think this is the way to treat clergy ministering on their own church's steps.

Is this what we've come to? How do we, as a church, respond to what's just happened to our own people?
The people making these decisions

1) don't care about church, clergy, holy places, anything. To them, it's all so much nonsense. Useful only as a photo op.

2) no longer care about how anything looks. Their cult base doesn't care what happens or if their guy does this or that, even though tons of them call themselves Christians. To them, Jesus Christ is a cartoon character, a kind of cultural touchstone. Or a password. As far as worship goes, they have chosen their god and they will not abandon him. They worship him on social media and anywhere else they have the chance.

I realize I'm not a member of this sub, but I thought it was appropriate at least to try to respond to that one part of the OP.

I am suggesting that and it had nothing to do with the President walking to the Church. It was not bad at all.
