This is the incorrect reaction to a white police officer murdering a black man in broad daylight. Looking for angles that make this less horrific isn’t the right move.

As far as the content of the Article: pretending this isn’t a race fueled murder is a ridiculous approach. The cops would never have even been called in the first place if the the murder victim was white. Since he was black, police were brought in and then murdered him.

Kind of agree on not focusing on the dead guy’s skin color if it was not a contributing factor in this case.

Still the writer’s link failed prove in any way that white people faced more police brutality - per capita at least - and seeing that US black population is many times more likely to be incarcerated

Incarceration in the United States - Wikipedia

It is also logical to assume they will have more negative interactions with the police which makes it not unreasonable to assume certain percentage of police force does have attitudes that reflect this.

Also whatever anyone wants to admit or there is often a difference in judiciary of how people are put through the system with clear bias often existing.

“And if we all focused on his humanity—instead of his skin colour—after his murder, there wouldn’t be riots across America today, and people would unite to remember him as a person—not a poster boy for a political agenda.”

Do you notice how easy it would be the to switch “his skin color” to “his religion” and make the same argument next time some Christian is persecuted.

Would you be ok with this kind of sentiment then or is there an actual degree of difference ?

For practical example think about a pastor opening his church and breaking the law against his state’s laws.

Would we concentrate on the fact that he is a pastor more than on a guy illegally opening a place for people to get together for whatever reason ?

I don't think we can call it "murder" until (or if) the court convicts him of murder.

pretending this isn’t a race fueled murder is a ridiculous approach.

I haven't seen the slightest evidence that race was a factor here (it may have been; but I've seen no evidence).

The only stereotype-related comment I'm aware of the policemen making is the line "This is why you don’t do drugs, kids."

The cops would never have even been called in the first place if the the murder victim was white.

There was no evidence of racism in the 911 call, either.

Being black isn’t against the law.

Sure, but in both cases we easily fixate on not to the act of law breaking itself but on who does the deed.
Okay, let’s run with that. How does this relate to the OP?

Beats me. I lost the red line when you stated that being black wasn’t a crime and wondered what that has to do with anything.

So back to racism ?

I’m trying to figure out what your point is in post 6.

Christians have been having riots? Dang, I've been missing out.

I’m trying to figure out what your point is in post 6.

Just that the idea of “let’s focus in his humanity” instead of whatever else that actually might have gotten him treated unequally can also used to mask real reasons for any negative actions.

Like being a Christian in Muslim country that gets treated more harshly for doing a crime than your average Muslim on street would.

Then when the court system is called out of for this unfair treatment the local newspaper prints same kind of article as in OP and claims we really should focus on the person’s humanity instead of how his religion is treated by the courts.

It has a hollow ring to it.

Sometimes we really need to evaluate exactly why a guy got murdered or manslaughtered instead of just “considering his humanity”

Let’s say the cop hates blacks. How is that going to change anything?

I would say it weakens the blacks ability to get equal treatment from an officer of the law who should be totally impartial.

Then the same officer can let his prejudices color his reports that go to court and again weaken the black guys defense there.

Don’t you think those are real concerns ?

Evidence from the United States suggests that white policemen are less likely to shoot a black man than black policemen are.

Because of that one cop? How does his action affect how a cop in my town acts?
