Trump says schools in US should be opened 'ASAP'

President Trump urged the reopening of schools throughout the U.S. on Sunday, as most remain closed to limit the coronavirus spread and protect the health of students during the pandemic.

His tweet was an apparent reaction to similar comments from Fox News' Steve Hilton on his program "The Next Revolution." Trump tagged Hilton and Fox News in a tweet Sunday where he mentioned reopening schools "ASAP."

"Schools in our country should be opened ASAP. Much very good information now available. @SteveHiltonx @FoxNews," Trump wrote.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

My wife is a teacher and due to my age and a couple of health issues I'm not real excited about her returning to work but, with the Country opening back up working parents can not stay home to watch their kids (especially the little ones). After school programs and sitters are in short supply now.

CV brings with it many, many problems.
Be safe out there.

Schools here in Italy, and in most of Europe, will probably not be reopening even in September - unless some special program could be set up.

We'll see.
But I DO NOT agree with schools reopening and if I were the parent, I'd keep my child home.

So they can open for a month and then close for the summer?

Nah, by the time you get the kids back into a routine of going to a school, it will be time to close them for summer break. This is my kid's last week of school here in Florida. They have been doing online classes. No reason to open them back up. My kids in NY, have the month of June, but they are already in the routine of online learning. May as well finish the school year.

Besides, what were these same parents going to do when summer break hit? they can just do the same thing as that, just adjust for it being longer.

Always interesting to see where the guidance for the captain at the helm of earth’s sole superpower comes from.

Probably the first POTUS to take his cues from Fox instead of his intelligence apparatus and teams of experts.

I agree that opening schools now is just unnecessary and a bit of a waste of time. I do think there are difficulties associated with this virus that may make the usual summer options for parents unavailable. It is interesting to me that, to some parents, their children's school has become a baby sitting service. They show no interest in doing any educating of their own nor any curiosity about what their children are being taught or who it is that is teaching them. Sometimes I wonder if some parents actually see themselves as the nightly babysitting service for the school's children.

School was a wonderful experience for me, but I really didn't learn very much. I walked out nearly as dumb as when I walked in. o_O My real education began right after I graduated.

Reminds me of a line from a Randy Newman song that is not in any way politically correct and would get one in serious trouble if one quoted the wrong lines from it. This one, though is probably only slightly offensive .
"College men from LSU. Went in dumb . Come out dumb too. "

My sister is a teacher and that is what they fear that people will home school who have no business doing so ( because they are not qualified) Different counties ( what most states call local government districts) are considering different things from online, to a flipped classroom ( where basically half the kids would go one day the other half the other day with the rest being online to putting off the school year and going later. Time will tell what will probably happen ( especially in the states that opened earlier is that it will be on the counties to decide how they want to handle it. Which if you asks me is really the best way to do it because not all states and counties were affected the same. In my state for example of 159 counties we have about five who have 1000s of cases and some that have had as few as one confirmed case in the whole county.

It's pretty much the same over here.
Up in Northern Italy, around the entire area of Milan, the CV has been the worst. Maybe because patient 0 was up there...flew in from China....and no one knew about the virus yet and by the time it was discovered it had spread to many persons. Then those that were well wanted to get away from it and headed south and spread it all over Italy.

Anyway, yes, either internet schooling will continue or split classrooms, as you said. The teachers here are very concerned about kids not being able to be together for the social life.

As to counties over there...same thing here. Where I live about 6 or 7 persons got it and 2 died (what's that percentage? For those who believe this might be a conspiracy....) That's about it. In other places, many got sick.

We just found out today that Andrea Bocelli had it back in March.

Third graders here using the internet for their studies are getting very little accomplished.

The average parents have proven to be very weak when it comes to checking the little ones progress made for the day (or week). They talk a big game but, let the little ones slide on by.

1) Given the general lack of COVID-19 testing directed at school aged children, just what kind of "much, very good information now available" is Trump referring?

2) Sending school-aged children back to school is a decision made by the individual state authorities and their parents - not the President and FOXNEWS!

3) Given the Trump Administration's decision to make the states responsible for COVID-19 testing, parents may not want to send their children to school until all staff and students have been recently tested - a privilege that is currently reserved for the President and those surrounding him!

4) Many of the states have complained that the Republican majority in the Senate is blocking legislation that would reimburse them for the added responsibilities this President shifted onto their shoulders - if they aren't financially solvent they will start with lay-offs which would include teachers!
