DONALD TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN to change the subject from the coronavirus pandemic took a bizarre turn on Thursday, as the president paused during a speech at a Ford Motor Company plant in Michigan to praise the “good bloodlines” of the family descended from the firm’s founder, Henry Ford, a notorious anti-Semite and favorite of Adolf Hitler.
In an apparent ad-lib, Trump looked up from his prepared remarks — which praised the firm for teaming up with General Electric to produce ventilators and face shields for medical workers — to observe that Henry Ford’s descendants, like the current chairman, Bill Ford, who had introduced the president, have “good blood.”

Perhaps but he laid the foundation for the loss in manufacturing jobs in the US. No one wanted to work on the assembly line because it was mind numbingly boring, so he paid them much, much more than they could get at any other job. Eventually Mexico and Asia want to get in on the act, they can work for a fraction of what the US worker gets. Now someone who spent 20 years tightening a bolt on an assembly line has no qualifications and can only make a fifth of what they were getting paid. They feel like they had been cheated. That is why we lost our manufacturing jobs. Good news is a robot can do it even cheaper than someone from Asia or Mexico and with less risk of a contagion. We might have 40 million unemployed in the US but soon every one of our robots will be gainfully employed.

I'm familiar with Smoot-Hawley. Some people claim it aggravated the Great Depression. I don't need to argue about how recent free trade agreements impacted the auto industry, since ZNP has adequately described that. (Note when the American people were presented with a President opposed to those agreements, they didn't let it pass.) I was simply pointing out that those agreements were implemented well after Henry Ford was gone.

Protection of an industry is not necessarily a good thing for the nation. Consider Japan. They decided to protect rice farmers, so they put a huge tariff on American rice, which due to technology and land factors, Americans can produce much more efficiently than the Japanese can.

People began to see American rice as a luxury good, and somehow better than Japanese rice. The net effect was to take money out of the pockets of Japanese citizens and give it to rice farmers who continued the economic inefficiency.

Free markets don't know anything, but they still know more than protectionists know.

Do a search on "Hapsburgs genetic" to see what inbreeding can do to a dynasty. And without inbreeding,there is no bloodline. Queen Elizabeth is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror, but it's highly unlikely that she has even one of his genes.

I don't think racism is informed by genetics but by environment, although I'm unsure if that's been studied much.

I'm familiar with the Hapsburgs and the problems of inbreeding (the Amish have similar issues). Most who adhere to the philosophy work within a pool and add outsiders to bring beneficial genes to the fold. As our genetic knowledge increased we're aware of the role it plays in many areas. Some exploit the information to enhance their families and legacy.

Turns out most of your intelligence is due to experience.

It's scientific... anywhere between 40-80% of our intelligence is heritable and genetic..

Closer to 40% than 80%, I think. My wife and I both have advanced degrees, and all my kids have college degrees and have jobs that require much intelligence. It would be flattering for me to think our genes are superior, but it's much more likely that the culture of our family was more responsible.

Xenophobia seems to be genetic; likely there was a survival value in avoiding strangers, who might carry disease organisms to which one's own group has little resistance. But it's clear enough that kids of different races, raised among other races, don't automatically form racist ideas.

I suggest you read The Accusation: Blood Libel in an American Town by Edward Berenson. It just came out in 2019 and spends time discussing the anti-semitism of Henry Ford. You local public library should have it or should be able to inter library loan it for you.

Agreed. I suggested the newer book only because it will probably be easier to get at a public library or to borrow on ILL.
