Long after its core mission was accomplished? Yesterday was the first day I can remember in which NY didn’t have the most new cases of any state. NY and NJ have, by a considerable margin, the highest rates of infection and death of anywhere in the country and, yes, their hospitals were overwhelmed.

The core mission was to flatten the curve. It is now flat. So flat that the hospital ship is no longer necessary and the field clinics were never used. If their hospitals were so "overwhelmed" why weren't any of the measures intended to prevent it used? Perhaps we can all blame Como for failing to use all the available resources instead of the virus. Although cramming a bunch of COVID19 patients in nursing homes didnt help the situation out either. Elderly died in nursing homes but at least it kept a few beds open at the hospital.

Five million have been infected in about six months. I did not see evidence is there it is no longer contagious. It does not spread as easily in warm weather and sunlight. Miami has one of the worse clusters in America. It spread indoors.

Children were rarely made seriously ill by coronavirus. People in their 20’s and 30’s are not as likely to need ventilators.

75% of coronavirus deaths happened in the 65+ group. These may stay at home. Others may need to go to work.

Perhaps you should ask the folks who provided the hospital ships and placed the restrictions on which cases they would take.

Surely "mountainmanbob" isn't advising the Governor and the Mayor to reopen New York City without adequate COVID-19 testing, a lack of federal financial support and its failure to meet this President's own CDC benchmarks before advancing to the next stage?

At least in NY and NJ (which is the area I'm watching), opening up will continue as long as cases continue to decrease. If Covid is really on its way out, hospital admissions and deaths will go down rapidly, and we'll cycle through the opening steps fairly rapidly. Since we don't know whether it's actually on the way out or not, that seems like the safest approach.

The danger of removing all limitations is that it takes several weeks for results to show, and if the guess is wrong we could end up having to go back into lockdown again. I really, really don't want to go through this again.

If you look at US numbers, they are going down fairly slowly. This doesn't look like something that's about to go away on its own. But if it is, it shouldn't take long for that to become obvious.

Personally, I don't think it's going away. I think we'll stabilize the situation, but with substantial continuing deaths. Probably at a rate that many people will consider acceptable, but many won't. We don't really have any choice though. We can't survive with the country closed much longer. But I'd like to see an opening spread over the next month, in hopes that the ongoing rate can be made as low as possible.

De facto, that's what is going to happen. States with a smaller problem with open more rapidly, but the populous areas are going to take a few weeks to a month.

Experts warn of second coronavirus wave in Dallas, Houston, Alabama and parts of Florida

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said Wednesday that his Alabama city is out of intensive care beds. “Right now, if you’re from Montgomery, and you need an ICU bed, you’re in trouble,” Reed said at a news conference. Dallas, Houston, Southeast Florida’s Gold Coast, the entire state of Alabama and several other places in the South that have rapidly reopened are in danger of a second wave over the next four weeks, a research team says.

Here are some significant developments

- Nearly 860,000 additional travelers flocked to parts of Maryland and Virginia over the weekend as the states began to reopen, underscoring concerns that piecemeal lifting of restrictions increases the chances of the virus spreading.

-Twenty-three children from the Washington, D.C., region are being treated for an inflammatory syndrome associated with covid-19, a recently discovered complication from the virus.

- President Trump escalated his campaign to discredit the integrity of mail balloting, threatening to “hold up” federal funding to Michigan and Nevada in response to the states’ plans to increase voting by mail to reduce the public’s exposure to the coronavirus.

- Guidance for reopening houses of worship has been put on hold after a battle between the CDC and the White House, which was resistant to putting limits on religious institutions, according to administration officials

Apparently there are already ominous signs of a second wave in those southern states where Republican Governors have followed this President's advice and may have reopened too early - Texas, Florida and Alabama where all the intensive care beds in Montgomery are filled!

When the "piecemeal," uncoordinated reopenings occur in adjacent states, this sets the stage for an inordinate amount of interstate traffic that brings with it the potential of spreading the virus over a wider area upon returning to their home state!

Most states are roughly constant, though I think their categorization of "roughly constant" nd "decreasing" is optimistic in some cases. Several states that were decreasing seem to have stopped.

What people overlook is that city, state, and national totals are not the condition of the whole. If the disease had "died out" in a state it could still wipe out a village and the totals might drop. I'm exaggerating of course. The reason infection rates are dropping is that people are taking extra precautions. The reason rats will suddenly up through the roof is that people stop taking precautions. Because they think it is safe. I saw the parks today populated with groups of people, all shoulder to shoulder.

In the US COVID deaths are double the rate of normal traffic deaths per year.
But we will go right back to the permanent state of 12 deaths per 100,000 with 2 million injuries as soon as we are ready to open the economy back up.

Except we don't do it "irrespective of the human cost." We acknowledge that the utility of driving overweighs the deaths it causes, but we also do everything we can to reduce those deaths. That's why we have safety features in cars, seatbelt laws, driver licensing requirements, speed limits etc... But people are calling for a return to things the way they were before Covid-19, with none of the precautions that would help reduce the amount of death.

Although I do not believe the Coronavirus to be a hoax, I do believe that the Democrats have capitalized on the opportunity to push their agenda through fearmongering. Furthermore, this virus is not going away. I predict that by the time a useable vaccine makes it to my body, it would have already mutated. Yes...there will be a second wave....and a third, and fourth... There will likely be a new "wave" every year somewhere just like there is a new "wave" every flu season. So hiding in a hole until it goes away is pure insanity. What ought to be done is figuring out how to safely reopen the economy. I also think the world should take China for everything they have .
