Hi barbarian,

Well, it's no less than what I've long claimed concerning President Trump and his comments. He just makes stuff up!! He really does it about like Rachel shows. He just sits around with his 'great wizard of Oz' ego and makes up 'facts' to support whatever position he's pushing for the day. And, according to all of the fired IGs, anyone unwilling to support his make believe facts is likely going to lose their job.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

The sad thing is, America has lost its position as leader of the Free World, and our allies are looking to each other for leadership now. And China is taking advantage by spreading its influence to replace the United States in other nations.

It will take generations to make the United States as great as it was before this man-child grifter took office.

I'd never rule America out of anything EVER. You have the optimism to escape a room with no doors and the aggression to work yourself out of a hole greater than the Challenger Deep.

As unpopular as it may sound, you just need an ordinary boring man as president. I've never liked these overly theatrical 'alpha males' leading people.

Just elect Fred in the Shed.

Hi barbarian,

I know this is going to sound 'un-American', but I'm ok with our stepping down from the world leadership position. There are some 200 nations on the planet and most of them seem to get along pretty ok without their having to be the biggest and baddest on the block.

The U.S. is a big country with lots of people and I don't think we'll ever be seen as being much like Moldavia, but we can be just as powerful as Great Britain or Mexico or Russia or China. We are just a nation...a geopolitical place on the face of the earth. We can sell weapons to the middle east and Israel without having to be the biggest player. Russia and China and Great Britain do it every day.

2000 years ago, Rome was the ruling nation of the earth. A few hundred years ago, Great Britain was the ruling nation of the earth. We have enjoyed that 'prestige' for awhile, but I don't see it as some 'must have'. China is a big country with more people than we have. Is there really some reason that they shouldn't be in charge for awhile, at least economically? Yes, I understand that they have a different form of governance, but that doesn't mean they'll change the whole world to that form of governance if they were in charge. Certainly the U.S., after being in charge for a couple of hundred years, hasn't changed all the world to democratic forms of governance.

If China is able to garner the support of other nations to make them the economic powerhouse of the world, I'm ok with living as people in Canada or Great Britain do. Personally, I believe this idea that China gaining power is a bad thing, is just some phobia that we've built for ourselves to convince ourselves that we're right.

The U.S. has been the world leader for many years now. Does Mexico's economy run on the dollar? Does Great Britain's or any other nation of size? The U.S. has been the world leader for some time now. Do all the other nations speak English? If China were to move in to the dominant position, I imagine that world politics would be just like they are today. Everyone would snicker at anything they did that was stupid and be impressed by the things that they did that were smart.

So, while I'm sure that our 'world dominance' does come with some good stuff for us, I don't think we'd all just blow up if we weren't in that position in the world. We'd live just as all the people of all the other nations have continued to live. Our president would be a mover and a shaker much like Angela Merkel is in Germany or Justin Trudeau is in Canada. Oil would likely be denominated in Yen instead of dollars. Other than that, I'm not sure we'd see a lot of day to day difference in the lives of the citizens of the U.S. Certainly some political figures might take a beating, but they aren't the general population of the U.S.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

Hi ReesePiece,

I would contend, that at least during WWII, Churchill had more optimism than we ever did. Against all the odds as his nation was being bombarded day and night by the German Luftwaffe, he continued to believe that Great Britain would prevail.

That's probably true; we're a violent people when aroused; it has to do with who it was came here and settled in. And who we had to fight to take it. The people who had this land were technologically backward and relatively few, but they were tough and effective fighters, and crazy brave.

In the long run they lost, but a lot of their culture worked its way into the American psyche.

Don't think those goofballs playing GI Joe with lookalike AR-15s around state capitols are representative of the real patriots out here.

Churchill was a rare breed of animal. They keep drawing up the comparison between him and Boris, but I'm afraid that remains to be seen. BoJo has done a decent job, but I'm not convinced yet.

I'm lucky enough to have smoked cigars in the same chair as Churchill on numerous occasions, he is (and will always be) the best thing about Great Britain. He fought the war (from an administrative standpoint) on his own, virtually.

The only blessing to come out of Trump's calamitous administration is the lessons that'll come of it. I'm all for 'the land of opportunity' but a line MUST be drawn somewhere. The only criticism I have with America is that their optimism CAN lack discipline. It's good to be grandiose and massively ambitious, but you need common sense and meticulous planning as well to balance it out and to give 'the dream' a leg to stand on.

You can't execute a master plan on ambition alone.

Russia has held that position for more than a decade now...

For that, Russia would have to be free. And it has fallen back into corruption and dictatorship. It is weaker now than it has been since Andropov.

Even worse, Putin did the same thing Trump did about COVID-19, and the results are even worse:

Russians Struggling to Survive Add Pressure to End Lockdown

    • Putin announced end of national stay-at-home period on Monday
    • Almost half of Russians only have enough to survive a month
Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Unlike the United States, there were no governors to act when Putin failed. And things got horrible very quickly. Now Putin is opening up the country while infections are still rising. It's not going to go well for him.

Edit. Actually, Putin will be isolated and protected. He'll still be rich and powerful. It's not going to go well for the Russian people, thanks to his bungling and incompetence.

I'd be more sympathetic, but we have the same problem in America.

As a country that may hold true but most don't possess the can-do spirit you've noted on a personal level.

As unpopular as it may sound, you just need an ordinary boring man as president. I've never liked these overly theatrical 'alpha males' leading people.

It is unlikely to happen. Our culture prizes overachievers who accomplish amazing feats. We praise go-getters and laud overcomers. Fred doesn't fit the narrative.

For that, Russia would have to be free.

Russia is free, from the ruinous IMF-dictated austerity policies of the Yeltsin years.

And it has fallen back into corruption and dictatorship. It is weaker now than it has been since Andropov.

Russia thwarted the US attempt to turn the Ukraine into a springboard to attack their country.

Russian-Bear.jpg

Russia also foiled the US plans to overthrow their Syrian ally and install a caliphate in its place.

Under Yeltsin the Russians didn't even have control of their own territory. I see Russia growing into the country it might have become were it not taken over by the Bolsheviks a hundred year ago...

America's attempts to be "leader of the free world" has basically meant endless interventions resulting in wasted blood and wasted money for us, and chaos and destruction in our wake. The burdens outweigh the benefits. So we elected a President who doesn't want to lead "the free world". America will not be leader of the free world. America will just be America.

The WuFlu has only become widespread in Russia fairly recently, despite sharing thousands of miles of border with China, largely because Russia had the sense to close the border early. Russia still has not been hit anywhere near as hard as the US or any Western European country, including Germany, so we'll still see how it pans out.

Poverty in Russia: the real threat to Putin’s reign
One in eight Russians survives on less than £150 a month, and there is no sign that the gap between rich and poor will narrow any time soon, writes Marc Bennetts in Moscow
Poverty in Russia: the real threat to Putin’s reign | World | The Times

Putin’s Bleak Covid-19 Admission: ‘We Don’t Have Much to Brag About’
Russia’s president acknowledged that his country risks being overwhelmed by the coronavirus.

MOSCOW — The head of Russia’s coronavirus task force, Tatyana Golikova, assured President Vladimir V. Putin in mid-March that the country was ready to take on the pandemic. From masks to ventilators, she said, Russia’s hospitals had everything they needed to weather the crisis.

“There is no reason at all to panic,” she said.

A week later, the head doctor of one of Moscow’s top hospitals caring for coronavirus patients quietly wrote to a medical charity asking for help. The hospital, he wrote, was in need of “disposable materials and equipment” to continue to serve the critically ill.

“We’re used to always living, somehow, in the unspoken, looking through rose-colored glasses,” said Elena Smirnova, the head of the charity, Sozidaniye. “They can’t hide this anymore.”
...
There was talk that Mr. Putin’s early move to shut down most travel from China, along with an extensive testing and contact-tracing effort rooted in the Soviet Union’s disease-fighting legacy, was succeeding where Italy, Spain and the United States all had failed.

But it has become clear in recent days that Russia is unlikely to escape a severe hit by the pandemic, presenting an existential test to the country’s teetering health system and a new challenge to the aura of rising confidence and competence projected by Mr. Putin’s Kremlin.

“We have a lot of problems, and we don’t have much to brag about, nor reason to, and we certainly can’t relax,” Mr. Putin told senior officials Monday in a televised video conference. “We are not past the peak of the epidemic, not even in Moscow.”

South Korea shut down travel from China after Trump did, not before. And yet they did a much better job of controlling the outbreak than Russia or the United States.
