Bill Maher said Friday that he is "hoping" for the bottom to fall out of the economy and for the country to enter a recession so we can "get rid of Trump." He said one way to do that is a "crashing economy." Maher said he is "sorry" if it hurts people, but rooting for a recession is a prevention measure to losing democracy.

(sorry i cant post the link with the video comments, it contains foul language)

I don't know why Americans care so much about what talk show hosts say. Majority of them are just voicing opinions and not giving any viable solutions. Same can be said about Hollywood celebrities. They live in a world far removed from the average Joe/Jane.

Maybe I'll put it this way. None of them even write their own contents. They have a team of writers. How sure are you that they earnestly even believe what they say? Or is it all a facade based on the current political temperature.

I pray that all countries come out of this crisis as intact as possible. Not for political reasons but for the average people. My advise is don't buy into ideas from people sitting on ivory thrones.

Such TV shows do give their opinion about political matters and do "inform" people. Or should i say misinform people?

Ahh, the politically incorrect Bill Maher. He says what he thinks, sometimes he's rude and even crude, he's a fighter he doesn't let anyone push him around. What's not to love?

A recession is a necessary thing since it only happens because of a debt bubble that keeps growing.

I personally don't need a recession. I need to work.

Of course, but that's why a debt bubble is a bad thing.

A debt bubble is never a good thing. To wish for it to burst as a "I told you so" is even worst. Both morally and economically. People like Maher will have enough money to weather the burst if it come. He already have enough to last him a lifetime (he's not young after all).

If it does burst due to this crisis people like Maher or Trump will not be the one suffering. The average Americans will be. And I don't think Maher can help rebuild the economy even if he wanted to.

Personally I dislike people like Maher who wish ill of a bad situation just to get his own wish. Being brash & rude is one thing. Being malicious is another.

Maher said he is "sorry" if it hurts people...
He means that he is sorry that it would hurt other people. He's well aware that he would not be much affected by a downturn, and that is why he can so casually wish hardships on the country.

Obviously, the current situation with the economy being dragged down by corona virus protocols is not a debt bubble. Unfortunately this contagion just happens to come when the economy we have is being propped up and stimulated on borrowed money to begin with.

Yes a debt bubble is bad which is why pumping more and more stimulus into an economy by borrowing from the future is never proof of a good economy nor is it good for the economy. There are ways to shrink the bubble in the least painless way, but some politicians would rather claim and some people would rather believe that the economy is doing great even though they are only shifting the burden of weight onto their grandchildren.

There are lot's of things Bill Maher says that I don't agree with. However, I don't think an I told you so coming from anyone is ever as worse as putting hands over my ears so as to not hear the Truth. I don't believe he's being malicious as much as he's sick of people believing lies.

Because they have a platform from which to promote their views the vast majority of people do not and will never have access to.

In context of promoting an agenda an HBO show is a powerful thing, particularly when accounting for context. Each week Maher creates an echo-chamber, filling his audience with the human equivalent of trained seals dutifully clapping and howling at his every word combined with a panel of sympathetic kindred all articulating the exact same ideology.

But it works, at least for a sizable percentage of the populace, because the show supports and promotes their bias and prejudice. And hate for Trump, which is what defines Maher's comments anyway.

Somehow i doubt that that liberals cared that Obama spent 700 billion to prop up the economy. To them Obama was the savior of America. Even now, before the dow dropped, they claimed that Trump was just riding the Obama economic recovery

A few polls in the last few years have indicated that most under 40 year olds get their news from shows like this.

There's a big difference between the circumstances. We were already in a free falling recession when Obama became President. Yes Obama used more than 800 billion dollars to prevent what many would say could have been a depression. And on top of that expenditure we were in a recovery during the first four years of the Obama administration where the lack of revenue from an ailing economy was causing large budget deficits. But just before Obama's second term, the economy was doing well enough that revenue was again coming into the treasury. Only when the economy could afford the lack of government spending did Obama begin cutting budget expenditures in his second term.

By contrast when Trump took over, there was already a growing economy in place and the budget deficit was for the most part shrinking. Trump immediately took on almost two trillion dollars in debt spread out over eight years with his tax cuts. He then felt that we could abandon the sequestration Obama had put in place, doubling the budget expenditures, believing it would be compensated by higher revenue from a faster growing economy. At the end of 2019, Trumps third year in office we now have almost a trillion dollar deficit and we're growing a giant debt bubble in the midst of an economy that can't generate the revenue to prevent another recession.

Meanwhile democrats like B.M. hope for a recession.
