Trump critics have criticized Trump for expressing hope in these difficult times. But what does Dr Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force say?

'The president is talking about hope for people and it's not an unreasonable thing to hope for people,' Dr Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said at the daily press briefing.
Mike Pence: 'Italy may be the most comparable" to the US on coronavirus cases and deaths
April 1, 2020

WASHINGTON – Vice President Mike Pence said in a Wednesday television interview that Italy "may be the most comparable area to the United States" in terms of coronavirus mortality rates and cases.

Pence had been asked on CNN when the Trump administration arrived at its projection discussed in Tuesday's coronavirus task force briefing that 100,000 to 240,000 Americans could die from the disease.

He replied that the administration had modeled "what's happened around the world. We think Italy may be the most comparable area to the United States at this point, for a variety of reasons."

The vice president called the potential range of deaths "heartbreaking."

Coronavirus: Pence says 'Italy may be the most comparable area' to US
**************************************************************************************************************
Dr. Fauci requires security because of the death threats he's received - apparently there are those who take offence when he speaks truth to power and tells the nation what that faction don't want them to hear!

This President had bungled the management of the federal government's response from the start and at every turn - the reality is that much of the nation has lost all confidence that this President has a command of the situation and that he is capable of overcoming his personal demons, take responsibility for dis decisions and to rise to the challenge!

Vice President Pence recently stated that America will be most comparable to Italy in terms of its confirmed cases and mortality rates, referring to the projected loss of life as "heartbreaking" - if one can find a glimmer of hope in that, be my guest!

It wasn't his hope that got us here. What got us here was an unfortunate setback in testing.

Agree, but not the point. The OP is a clear strawman - no Trump-opponent has devalued hope.

Perhaps. But then the statement is irrelevant as it is far too nebulous. What does your average "Trump-opponent" actually hope for?

As much death, destruction, pain and suffering possible to stem from this crisis in the extended hope it will help defeat President Trump in November.

His early denial gave it a head start.
He imposed travel restrictions early on. Thats not something a person would do if they are wanting to propagate denial. Its proof that Trump took things very seriously.

Perhaps taking the threat serious enough to put competent people in place for such things as logistics, allowing health experts to lead, and to have one central information center. Hope might be better delivered by asserting confidence rather down the initial minimizing, contradictions, petty and vindictive rhetoric, and sometimes lies!

Yes, he did take the step to say it would go way...and that we are totally in control! Or did you have other steps in mind?
We actually dont know how this virus will react, whether its seasonal or not. Even so, Trump's comment didn't diminish the US response to this virus. You criticized Trump for not overriding FDA and CDC regulations on testing, and thats a decision doctors must make not Trump.. That seems to be a step you are criticizing Trump for.

The logistical system has been a marvel since State Governors began ordering businesses to close. Food still gets to the stores and supplies gets to where they are needed. What the MSM talking heads are whining about is the fact there weren't five billion mask just lying around prior to all of this beginning. If the state of New York is suffering a shortage of particular medical supplies, whose fault is that?

Did the people of New York elect a governor or not?

...allowing health experts to lead...

Health experts are not elected officials and thus not qualified to lead a government response.

...and to have one central information center.

The President hold a press conference every day. That CNN and MSNBC won't cover them isn't a sign of collapse on the part of the Trump administration.

The American people at large are not so stupid they will fall prey to the propaganda machine House Democrats have and wish to expand operation of.

Hope might be better delivered by asserting confidence rather down the initial minimizing, contradictions, petty and vindictive rhetoric, and sometimes lies!

Why bring Nancy Pelosi into this?

Need answers as always you just extract what you want from what people and me have been suggesting. How it will react... we are dealing with the here and now! The US response? Yes, many other countries had the tests and took steps long before we did...but his rhetoric doesn't matter... Any critique of trump revolves around him and his administration's slow response. Denying such doesn't actually make the facts go away....

The Stafford Act.

Correct, I should have said to lead the public health information.

Yes, and fortunately for quite some time Fauci and others have been able to be on CNN , MSNBC, etc. to correct the misinformation from trump and others. Further, I no longer watch because of trump's ramblings, self promotion, and interestingly they were much more honest and informative when pence led them... obviously trump doesn't like to share the spotlight!

Oh, you must be a pelosi hater...

Surely you must see that blaming Trump for everything is partisan and subjective. We took proper steps in the beginning to create our own tests. You cant subjectively pin blame on Trump for that.

Surely you must see that he is not being blamed for "everything". We've been over this time and again... other countries had testing long before we did. Initial testing is critical to proper response, those are the facts If you have ever served in an upper management position you are well aware that anything that happens under your "watch" is your responsibility...that is how it works. He had all of the tools necessary at his disposal to address the issue head on...he choose not to, simple as that.

I will now depart so that the trumplicans can make more excuses, twist more facts, post inane questions, obfuscate, etc., etc. ….. and of course fall back on any criticism is "trump haters, trump haters, trump haters". (oh, and their "liberals, too!)

According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Health and Security, the USA was prepared....

The United States was ranked the best-prepared country in the world to face a global pandemic in a study released by the Nuclear Threat Initiative and Johns Hopkins Center for Health and Security in late 2019.

The findings, detailed in the 2019 Global Health Security Index, appear to challenge the claims made by Democrats in recent weeks that the Trump administration left the country ill-prepared and dangerously vulnerable to the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The president even touted the study during a White House press briefing last month.

What are the details?
To produce the findings, researchers analyzed 195 countries around the world, working with "an international advisory panel of 21 experts from 13 countries to create a detailed and comprehensive framework of 140 questions, organized across 6 categories, 34 indicators, and 85 subindicators to assess a country's capability to prevent and mitigate epidemics and pandemics."

The six categories were prevent, detect, respond, health, norms, and risk.

The U.S. scored highly and ranked near the top in all six categories, and scored extraordinarily well in indicators such as risk communication, data integration, biosafety, biosecurity, and emergency preparedness and response planning.

Critics were quick to point out the single area in which the study found the U.S. lagging behind the rest of the world: "health care access." According to the GHS Index, the U.S. ranks 175th out of the 195 countries surveyed in this area.

"And I think we all kind of know why," Priya Bapat, an Economist Intelligence Unit consultant, told Business Insider last month in reference to the country's rejection of socialized health care for all.

At the same time, the U.S. ranked at the top in the health category as a whole due to high scores in health capacity, medical countermeasures, communication, infection control, availability of equipment, and the capacity to test.

We were making our own tests just as the world was making their own as well. We got behind because the CDC test wasn't accurate. Not Trumps fault.
