First was their slow action to declare it a pandemic. Advising nations to not initiate travel bans and telling them to act based on facts which I may add is faulty facts.

Then come the heap of praises on how China dealt with the situation and throwing shade at other countries saying their medical system will be overwhelmed. With Bruce Aylward saying if he got corona virus he wants to be treated in China.

Now a total avoidance of question regarding Taiwan membership in WHO. Despite the impressive numbers Taiwan is achieving with corona virus. His actions are un-befitting of any person given so high a position.

If I don't see it with my own eyes and hear with my own ears I would have never believe it.

WHO is corrupted to the core by politics and the world should be worried. Our lives are in the line.

It's a worldly organisation. Like the UN, the Olympic committee, World soccer, the G20, the EU, Motor racing and anything else you can think of. They are all infected with a disease worse than any other. It is the spirit of the world.

No, that's completely incorrect.

The WHO, like the UN, is a cowed entity entirely dependent on the world's powers for its survival. This isn't new, the WHO kow tow to China is ancient history. It kow tows to the US even more. To describe it as corruption is unfair, its the price they pay for existing. I'd rather a hobbled WHO than no WHO at all. By and large they are a bunch of underpaid medicos doing outstanding work preventing and curing illness amongst the poor brown people most 1st worlders pretend don't exist. All of a sudden a disease rears its head that affects the rich white people and said people are aghast at an organisation that has done more to save lives than any other in the last 200 years.

This beat up is utterly despicable.

"Depart from me, I never knew you"

Boy I'd live to be a fly on the arm of the Throne of Judgement.

Why has this got to do with race all of a sudden? Isn't the DG an Ethiopian? WHO is corrupt and an internal audit even found it to be so. Yes WHO has save lives before but what it has done recently showed a darker side to an "International organization" who's purpose is to look after the world's health.

Nothing is beyond reproach of criticism. Especially when it gets in the way of actual human lives.

The WHO does what it can but it is torn by internal and external influences - like virtually all massive organisations. The UN is the plaything of Muslim nations whose main intent is to rid the world of Israel. I don't accept that first world people are indifferent to the plight of Africans. There are many organisations and many donors who try to help. The biggest enemy of the Africans is the corrupt political class and the tribalism that still rules. That is not the fault of the West.

I was commenting on what the WHO does most of its time.

Rubbish. The right wing blame-o-sphere wants everyone to remember where the Chinese Wuhan Chinese virus Wuhan Chinese virus came from, and reminding everyone about the Chinese treatment of Taiwan, and the WHO's kow tow to that, fits in nicely with that sad, sad, stupid, and down right evil line of thought.

So far so sane...

- like virtually all massive organisations.

No, like all charity based massive organisations entirely reliant on powers for their existence.

That's the silliest thing I have ever read. The UN is the plaything of the US, China, the EU, and everyone else with actual money. And even with that, we're better off with than without.

I would agree with you on this. The Western world is one of the biggest contributor to charity. Far surpassing many parts of the world. While imperial Europe has been a source of many conflict in the past, what those nations choose to be now have nothing to do with past actions.

My country is a prime example. Being ruled by the British that divided us by race, once we got our independence is the local political parties who continued the race/religion divide. It is far past time we look at ourselves for our problems than look to the past to justify our current failing

Do I look like a Western right winger to you? Do you even know where I'm from? I give you a hint look at my profile. Another hint my skin has a yellow tint. Try and guess what race I'm

You look like a Lutheran. So, yeah you do indeed look like a Western right winger with a anti-Chinese chip on your shoulder. Quick question, how's being a Christian working out for you in Malaysia? I dare say you'd be more than happy to append your real name to a critique of the Malaysian treatment of non muslims. Oh wait, is a far more powerful group going to cause you to kow tow so you can continue to exist?

You must be a bundle of joy to be around. Anti-Chinese? I'm one (a Chinese). Please try and differentiate between a race and a country.

I'm not here to amuse your dares and neither should I. It's called baiting and I'm not a fish. Call me what you want it's the internet. Maybe you should look into the mirror. It was you who keeps bringing up race in the conversation.

My criticism has been about WHO and how it's members regardless of race have been corrupted by politics. I have given a video as proof. You can disagree it's your prerogative but at least back it up with sources not name calling or insults.

@Tanj So an organization helps people, then suddenly is immune to criticism--and when it does wrong, it's all hunky dory because "a hobbled WHO is better than no WHO"?

I'm not even really on any side here, but all of the snark, ad hominem and blatant politically charged bias is enough to convince me that your side is probably not the winning side. Using trigger words like "rich white people", "right wing blame-o-sphere" and trying to guilt-shame people into feeling bad for having opposed opinions has no place in actual debates, and should stay on places like Tumblr and Twitter.

Finally, even if one dislikes China as a country(and...I can't really blame anyone for feeling that way considering the Chinese government's track record)that doesn't make you 'anti-chinese' nor does it justify treating Chinese people wrongfully. Some of us just think China is a burning trash heap right now due to its government, and call it like it is. I'm all for Chinese people tho as long as they don't try turning my country into China 2.0(which they don't seem to be interested in doing, seeing as if that was the case they'd probably have stayed in China.)

@theoneandonlypencil is that Neko Atsume in your profile? I play it too
Yes it is LOL. I just got back into it recently and have been using the cats as profile pictures.

I've got a pretty funny one involving the cardboard train as my Skype pfp. Imagine Thomas the tank engine but with a cat's face xD

The only time the average person hears about WHO is every 100 years or so when this kind of emergency pops up.

My PhD supervisor, who turned 77 this year, was asked to fly from his home town in Australia to Geneva (WHO HQ) to help with the global response to this pandemic. He was offered at cost recompense, and a guarantee of not returning to Australia until it was over.

He, of course, said yes.

I'm not even really on any side here

Except you are. You are on the side of the petty minded selfish bless and do not curses who think that the WHO is comprised...actually, I don't know how to end that sentence. Who do you think works for WHO?

but all of the snark, ad hominem and blatant politically charged bias is enough to convince me that your side is probably not the winning side.

My side being the selfless people that put themselves in harms way to help everyone else.

You are correct, that is not the winning side. That's the humans side. I dream at night of waking up in a world where Christians are on that side.

Hasn't happened yet.

But it's OK, I'll leverage the 30 years experience I have in evolutionary biology to help build a vaccine to COVID19 so that "aussie" Pete can continue to tell us how evolution is false.

I am so tempted to send an email out to the myriad colleagues I have in this field, and ask them to just stop. Stop the vaccine research, stop the therapeutic research, stop the public health initiatives. Let 10-15% of the world die, and wait for them to crawl on their bellies for forgiveness. Sadly, I am in this for the problem solving around high dimensional data, they are in it to help people, so it wont wash.

That sounds like an all-expense-paid trip to Switzerland. I'd say yes, too. ;-)

Did I ever say that WHO was bad? I only quoted your faulty logic about it being immune to criticism in my first statement because I was surprised you'd even let something so absurd escape your mouth. Even mother Teresa is not exempt from criticism.

Except you are. You are on the side of the petty minded selfish bless and do not curses who think that the WHO is comprised...actually, I don't know how to end that sentence. Who do you think works for WHO?

If you had read between the lines, so to speak, on my previous post, you'd find I don't even have any idea what's being talked about. I was simply commenting on how stupid your response and overall logic was. So no, I'm not on the side of the 'petty minded bless do not curse' side--whatever that's supposed to mean.

My side being the selfless people that put themselves in harms way to help everyone else.

LOL, guess I should tell all of the Christians organizing charities, risking their lives going on missionary trips in third world countries and those who also go into dangerous job fields because of their faith that they aren't doing enough.

You are correct, that is not the winning side. That's the humans side. I dream at night of waking up in a world where Christians are on that side.

Hasn't happened yet.

Except you really don't, because there are plenty of Christians on that 'side'-- you'd apparently rather acknowledge only the ones you dislike since otherwise you'd lose part of your narrative on the 'evil rich white right-wing christians'. I'm surprised that for someone who is so 'human', you seem to have little to no compassion for those who disagree with you. I mean, God forbid you actually be kind and politely explain why someone is wrong and how their thinking is negatively impacting others, amirite?

But it's OK, I'll leverage the 30 years experience I have in evolutionary biology to help build a vaccine to COVID19 so that "aussie" Pete can continue to tell us how evolution is false.

You could be helping build a vaccine, but you choose instead to spend your time belittling people on some online forum? Wow.

Okay? I'm not really sure what response you want out of that except say congratulations, you're petty, spiteful and have no patience.

Honestly I'm also surprised someone so 'human' finds it difficult to look at anything from someone else's perspective. Obviously OP had a problem with WHO, because they're worried about corruption in the organization. They provided a video that led them to believe that, and they have every right as a HUMAN to be concerned. WHO has helped many people, which is exactly why it's crucial that it stays in the best shape it can.

What you could've done is understood where OP was coming from, addressed the issue with facts and attempt to clear up any misconceptions about this group you obviously care about.

Yet instead you decided it was a better idea to belittle everyone, throw insults and assumptions to 'poison the well' and then use your ties to said organization/field to somehow shield yourself from any criticism of your behavior.

On average I tend to like atheists just fine, but right now you're acting like the typical 16 year old regular on r/atheism who still can't forgive his parents for making him go to church. Grow up and get a hold of yourself. If you want to prove that you're so much better than all of the lousy Christians, maybe start with being less of a jerk.

My apologies, I did indeed mean to type "China" not "Chinese".

My criticism has been about WHO and how it's members regardless of race have been corrupted by politics.

And my criticism of this argument is how is that helpful? The WHO has been corrupted by politics since its inception. What is the point in suddenly bringing it up now? Have you proffered a solution to said corruption?

From the way you replied to others in the post I have my reserved doubts of your sincerity. But I'll accept it at face value.

The point of bringing it up in the forum is to highlight my views on the situation. There maybe no solution to anything. Forum is for discussion and many times no viable solution is to be had.

It's like you complain about the West's past (and implied current) racism & bigotry and me challenging you saying the world has always been inherently racist, so what's your solution? Are you in the position to provide one and enforce it? If not live with it. There end of discussion. Is this how a forum should be. My truth full stop?

Nobody has a problem with your view on WHO let me be honest. It's your delivery of your point people take issue with. Peppered in your opinion are things not related to the topic at hand. More egregiously is how blatant you label people who have different opinions with you as racist & right wing. Not to mention the so thinly veiled racist view you have about white people & right leaning people.

If you consider yourself as a paragon of virtue, progressiveness & libertarian, you're failing to uphold that.

Yep. I could have ignored your comment or doubled down on it or tried to misdirect, but instead I posted an apology without qualification...and you still doubt it.

You follow a religion which has forgiveness as its central tenet and you are incapable of it.

Have a nice day, you also wont be hearing from me again.
