COVID-19: Texas official suggests elderly willing to die for economy

Then The Federalist chimes in: Writer For 'The Federalist' Suggests Social Distancing To Save People's Lives May Not Be Worth Economic Costs

Then Brett Hume chimes in.

Where were these people when government inaction and lack of tests and of protective equipment put many more American lives in jeopardy than would have been had we adopted the very successful South Korean approach?

We are seniors, successful and comfortable enough to have suffered setbacks in the stock market, but also seniors to see that if the wealthy and businesses are worried about the poor being unprotected they should give back their tax cuts and enact sensible reforms---not tell their grandparents to commit passive suicide!!!

The seniors I know who are retired lead happy and purposeful lives. They are the heart of many volunteer and church ministries, sometimes several at a time--I know I am.

They are loved and cherished by children and grandchildren whom they love and cherish in return.

My response to those who suggest that older people should be "happy" to die to improve the economy is:

Re: the idea that seniors should risk their lives to save the economy: income inequality is rampant and accelerating. The 1% have a huge share of the country's wealth. So when privileged politicians and pundits suggest we sacrifice our lives for "the economy" they are suggesting we sacrifice for an economy that primarily benefits them and their heirs. My message to them: it's your prosperity. You make the sacrifice.

Ordinarily, Boomers prefer that other people die for their money. So I kind of admire some of them for living (dying?) up to their own example.

If the economy suffers greatly because of this then far greater amount of people will suffer than the virus alone and the model of saving lives through things like lock down restrictions eventually will have diminishing returns when compared to the negative impact this will play on the economy and suffering through that.

If we focus on the economy and save it then it will always be criticised it was the wrong focus. If we focus on the virus imposing heavier restrictions and beat the virus at the expense of the economy it will be criticised for being the wrong focus.

Basically we don't know the future, but we need to react on what is around us rather than what might be. One problem at a time.

I've heard the phrase "love of money is the root of all evil" but I never knew how deadly serious that was. People are seriously advocating others expose themselves to the virus and die so wealthy corporations can make money? That is so selfish. It doesn't seem that strange though compared to just a week ago people partying on the beaches and crowding in restaurants despite bans. It seems like callousness and a lack of compassion are seen as virtues by many people now. :weary:

What they don't realize is that letting a lot of people die will hurt the economy even worse.

Trying to get everyone to risk their lives, and the lives of their loved ones on a daily basis while hospitals are overrun isn't going to go as smoothly for the economy as the federalist thinks.
