Hi all there seems to be some confusion here for some people on this topic and being critical subject matter, I throught it would be good to share a different perspective as to why God's Law applied both to the Torah (all laws) but specifically to God's 10 commandments are a part of the Gospel of our Lord JESUS Christ.

These are the questions for consideration in this thread which will help the discussion...

1. HOW DOES THE BIBLE DEFINE GOSPEL?
2. WHAT ROLE DOES THE MOSAIC BOOK OF THE LAW HAVE IN THE GOSPEL (Book of the law)?
3. WHAT ROLE DOES GOD'S LAW HAVE IN THE GOSPEL (10 Commandments; tables of stone)?
4. IS GOD'S LAW ABOLISHED OR ESTABLISHED IN THE GOSPEL (10 Commandments)?

Friendly discussion only and please provide scripture for your belief.

May God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

1. HOW DOES THE BIBLE DEFINE GOSPEL?

Very simply if you have not got the time to read all the supporting scriptures in this post the take home message and scriptural definition of the Gospel in the bible is…

The Gospel is JESUS CHRIST <Jesus means Savior; JOHN 1:29> and JESUS is THE WORD OF GOD (JOHN 1:1-14; JOHN 17:17; JOHN 14:6). THE WORD OF GOD is the GOSPEL BECAUSE BY FAITH IT IS OUR SAVIOR and this IS the GOOD NEWS to those who BELIEVE. (JOHN 1:1-14; JOHN 1:29; JOHN 17:17; 14:6; MATTHEW 4:4). Therefore ALL THE WORD OF GOD IS THE GOSPEL because it points to JESUS and Gods plan of salvation for all mankind and we are to live bu every word of it *MATTHEW 4:4.

The death, burial and resurrection of Christ is a very important part of the Gospel but is that all there is to the Gospel? Lets look at God's Word.......

The Gospel means; G2098 εὐαγγέλιον euaggelion (ev-an-ğe'-liy-on) n. a good message; Good news).

Ok I think most know that the word Gospel means good news or a good message. So if you only believe that the Gospel is the death burial and resurrection of Christ, how do you harmonize the following scriptures......

After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.....

MARK 1:15[15], And saying, The time is fulfilled, and THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL.

Wait a minute? Jesus is ONLY JUST STARTING HIS MINISTRY and has NOT DIED, has not been buried and if he has not died and not been buried, he certainly has not been resurrected. Yet here we have Jesus BEGINNING his MINISTRY and preaching the GOSPEL

and again..................

MARK 8:35 [35], For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but WHOSOEVER SHALL LOSE HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE AND THE GOSPELS, THE SAME SHALL SAVE IT.

Well here we have it again the Gospel is being preached BEFORE the death of Jesus and again......

Matthew 4:23 [23], And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Seems like Matthew and Mark both agree that Jesus is preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom before the death of Jesus...

MATTHEW 9:35[35], And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Yep Jesus still going about everywhere preaching the Gospel. His whole Ministry BEFORE His DEATH was preaching the GOSPEL..

MATTHEW 11:4 [4], Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: [5], The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and THE POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.

and again..............

MATTHEW 24:14 [14], And this GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM SHALL BE PREACHED IN ALL THE WORLD for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Yep Jesus is still preaching the Gospel before His Death and Resurrection. Mathew and Mark both agree.....
Luke talks about Jesus in the Synagogue.....

LUKE 7:22[22], Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor THE GOSPEL IS PREACHED.

Yep Matthew, Mark and Luke all agree the Gospel was being preached BEFORE the DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS.......

Luke 20:1 [1], And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and PREACHED THE GOSPEL, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

Yep there goes Jesus again teaching the people in the temple and preaching the GOSPEL before the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.....

So ok lets bring it all together............

The Good New (Gospel) is JESUS and Jesus is the WORD OF GOD. It is the WORD OF GOD THAT IS THE GOSPEL that we are to BELIEVE IN AND LIVE BY. (Matt 4:4; John 1-1-4; John 3:16). Why do you say it is a "works based doctrine" when we have to BELIEVE EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD? It is by GRACE that we are SAVED <HOW?> THROUGH FAITH and NOT of your selves it is a GIFT of GOD and NOT of WORKS LEST ANY MAN should boast.

Now if you do not know what the GOSPEL is how can you preach it to others? Man does not live by bread alone but by EVERY WORD that proceeds out of the MOUTH of GOD.

Jesus's ministry started since he was a child but more so after the Baptism of John and his temptation in the wilderness where he soon after started preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND! (MATTHEW 4:17; MATTHEW 23; MATTHEW 9:35; MATTHEW 11:5; MATTHEW 24:14; MATTHEW 26:16)

Did you know that the Gospel was being preached BEFORE the NEW Testament scriptures (Hebrews 4:2)? The GOSPEL is indeed JESUS; the Word of God and he is the good news of the Old and NEW Testament scripture that we are to BELIEVE and FOLLOW.

The Gospel is JESUS <Jesus means Savior; JOHN 1:29> and JESUS is THE WORD OF GOD (JOHN 1:1-14; JOHN 17:17; JOHN 14:6). THE WORD OF GOD is the GOSPEL BECAUSE BY FAITH IT IS OUR SAVIOR and this the IS GOOD NEWS to those who BELIEVE. (JOHN 1:1-14; JOHN 1:29; JOHN 17:17; 14:6; MATTHEW 4:4). Both the old and the new testament scriptures are the two great witnesses pointing to JESUS as the Saviour of the world *JOHN 4:42

MARK 1:1 The beginning of the GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST; THE SON OF GOD <the WORD OF GOD; John 1:1-14; 17:17; 14:6>

THE GOSPEL WAS PREACHED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT....

GALATAINS 3:8 [8], And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, PREACHED BEFORE THE GOSPEL UNTO ABRAHAM, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

Yep once again seems like Abraham had the Gospel in his day in the OLD Testament well before Mt Sinai...

LUKE 4:17-19 [17], And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, [18], The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because HE HAS ANNOTATED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19], To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Well it seems like Isaiah from the OLD TESTAMENT knew about the Gospel (ISAIAH 52:7 pointing to Jesus in LUKE 7:22) so the Gospel indeed was being preached BEFORE the DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS even in the OLD TESTAMENT.......

The Gospel was preached to God's people leaving Egypt...

HEBREWS 4:1-5 [1], Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. [2], FOR UNTO US WAS THE GOSPEL PREACHED AS WELL AS UNTO THEM; BUT THE WORD PREACHED DID NOT PROFIT THEM NOT BEING MIXED WITH FAITH IN THEM THAT HEARD IT. [3], For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. [4], For he spake in a certain place of the SEVENTH DAY on this wise, And God did rest the SEVENTH DAY from all his works.
[5], And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

In summary....

1. The "GOSPEL" meaning is simply "Good News"
2. The "GOSPEL" was being preached in the OLD TESTAMENT as well as the NEW TESTAMENT scriptures
3. JESUS preached the "GOSPEL" BEFORE his death buriel and resurrection

The "Gospel" (good news) is EVERY Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God and it is God's Word that we are to live by and have life (Matthew 4:4). The "Gospel" was being preached before the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus (e.g. Mark 1:15; 8:35; Matthew 4:23; Matthew 9:35; 11:5; 24:14; Luke 4:18; 7:22; 20:11)

The Good New (Gospel) is indeed Jesus, His life, death, resurrection and new administration as our great high priest, but Jesus is the Word of God. The Gospel is the WORD OF GOD and it is the WORD OF GOD that we are to BELIEVE and live by. (Matthew 4:4; John 1-1-4; John 3:16).

If we are NOT BELIEVING and LIVING by the WORD OF GOD we have yet to experience God's GRACE through FAITH, because OBEDIENCE is the FRUIT of FAITH. If their is NO FRUIT you are still in your SINS and do not know him who LOVES ALL (1 John 3:3-10; James 2:18; 20; 26; Hebrews 10:26-27; 6:4-8).

God loves you and wants you to be ready for his return. If you hear his voice please harden not your heart. Search the scriptures and see if these things be so like the faithful Bareans and examine yourself to see if you are really in the faith or not and receive Gods blessings.

God bless…

2. WHAT ROLE DOES THE MOSAIC BOOK OF THE LAW HAVE IN THE GOSPEL (Book of the law not 10 commandments we will deal with this one separately)?

Ok now we have a biblical definition of what the Gospel is and that is the Gospel meaing good news is JESUS <Jesus means Savior; JOHN 1:29> and JESUS is THE WORD OF GOD (JOHN 1:1-14; JOHN 17:17; JOHN 14:6). THE WORD OF GOD is the GOSPEL BECAUSE BY FAITH IT IS OUR SAVIOR and this IS the GOOD NEWS to those who BELIEVE. (JOHN 1:1-14; JOHN 1:29; JOHN 17:17; 14:6; MATTHEW 4:4) Therefore every word of God that we are to live by *MATTHEW 4:4 is the gospel.

Let's look at the Gospel in the Mosaic book of the law...

Many of the "Shadow laws *HEBREWS 10:1-12; COLOSSIANS 2 in ordinances for remission of SINS, the Levitical Priesthood, the earthly Sanctuary Service and annual festivals are all prophetic in nature pointing to JESUS as the promised Messiah and God's plan of salvation for mankind in the new covenant of JEREMIAH 31:31-34 repeated in HEBREWS 8:10-12 of a new heart to love God and our fellow man. Many of these laws for remission of sins through animal sacrifices and sin offerings and the ceremonial laws under the Levitical Priesthood are simply the Gospel of JESUS CHRIST and point to JESUS who is that very Gospel and His work as the true lamb of God that takes away the sins of the whole world *JOHN 1:29; JOHN 1:36; ACTS 8:32; 1 PETER 1:19; REVELATION 5:6. The Old covenant is the Gospel of JESUS CHRIST before his coming pointing to JESUS and his work on our behalf and His continued work on our behalf in the Heavenly Sanctuary as our new great High Priest and perfect sacrifice *HEBREWS 7:1-28; HEBREWS 8:1-13; HEBREWS 9:1-28 and HEBREWS 10:1-24. The only difference between the Old covenant and the New covenant is that those on the old covenant looked forward by faith to the coming of the MESSIAH (JESUS) while we look back to coming of JESUS. As shown through the scriptures already the Gospel is both the OLD and NEW Testament which are the two great witnesses the point to JESUS and God's plan of salvation for all mankind in the new Covenant through the Spirit to love and not in the letter *ROMANS 8:1-4; ROMANS 3:31; GALATIANS 5:16.

God bless.

Hello @LoveGodsWord, before I comment and answer some of your questions, I was hoping that you might answer one or two for me :)

First off, since there is "Good News", there must be "bad news" as well (IOW, that which the "Good News" seeks to remedy). So my first question for you is this, what is the "bad news"? (and what makes it "bad"?)

And a second, related question is this concerning the Good News, what is it that makes the Good News "good"?

Thanks!

--David

Mark 1: 14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Matthew 4: 23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom...

And, the laws of God will be written on our hearts at that time, not on tablets of stone (there will be no 'stony hearts' there).

3. WHAT ROLE DOES GOD'S LAW HAVE IN THE GOSPEL (10 Commandments; tables of stone)?
Hello again LoveGodsWord, I'll go ahead and add a few Scriptural thoughts about these two questions, but will then wait for my questions above to be answered before continuing. Concerning salvation (from first to last) the law's use is best described in Galatians 3:24 below as our "tutor", whose purpose is to lead us to Christ.

Galatians 2
21 If righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.

Galatians 3
21 If a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law

Galatians 3
24 The Law has become our tutor ~to lead us to Christ~, so that we may be justified by faith.

--David

Romans 11
6 If it is by grace, then it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

3. WHAT ROLE DOES GOD'S LAW HAVE IN THE GOSPEL (10 Commandments; tables of stone)?

Very simply God's LAW (10 commandments) *NEHEMIAH 10:29; EXODUS 20:1-17 have the same role they always have and that is to give us the knowledge of good and evil; sin and righteousness *ROMANS 3:20; ROMANS 7:7; 1 JOHN 3:4; PSALMS 119:172. God's law defines what sin is *1 JOHN 3:4 which begin in the heart *MATTHEW 5. According to the scriptures if we break any one of God's 10 commandments we stand condemned guilty before God "under the law"of breaking the whole law *JAMES 2:10-11; ROMANS 3:19-20. Gods Law is our school master, our teacher that shows us our need of God's salvation. God's LAW shows us that we are all slaves of sin *ROMANS 3:9-18; ROMANS 7:1-24; ISAIAH 1:5-6; JEREMIAH 13:23 and leads us to the foot of the cross so we can call out to God in faith "Have mercy on me God for I am a sinner. It leads us to Christ that we can be forgiven through faith *GALATIANS 3:22-25. It shows us that all we are all sick with sin and in need of a Physician for without many do not know the meaning of the Word of JESUS "They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.*MATTHEW 9:12-13.

It is through God's law giving us a knowledge of our sins *ROMANS 3:20; ROMANS 7:7 that we see the love of God for us personally that he loved us so much that he sent His only begotten son (symbolic of Abrahams sacrifice of Isaac) into our world, the son of the God of heaven to die the death that we deserve to die on our behalf for our sins that whosoever believes His Words should not perish but have eternal life *JOHN 3:16-21.

You see Gods' LAW is so essentially a part of the gospel of our LORD JESUS CHRIST that it is through God's LAW that JESUS is revealed to the sinner as our only hope of God's salvation and allows us through faith to walk in God's presence (the Spirit) *ROMANS 8:1-4; GALATIANS 5:16

Very simply....

1. If there is no law there can be no knowledge of what sin is *ROMANS 3:20; ROMANS 7:7
2. If we have no knowledge of what sin is we have no need of a Savior from our sins *MATTHEW 9:12-13
3. If we have no Savior from our sins we have no salvation because we are still in our sins and the scriptures are fulfilled For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law *ROMANS 2:12

It is this very letter of the law that leads us to the Spirit of the law written on the heart through faith to love and it is only through love that we can follow him who calls us to love another and love is the fulfilling and establsihing of the law in the heart of those who believe and follow God's Word *HEBREWS 8:10-12; MATTHEW 22:36-40; ROMANS 13:8-10; JAMES 2:8-12.

Do we make void the law of God through faith? No we establsih the law through faith *ROMANS 3:31
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit *ROMANS 8:1-4

May you receive Gods Word and be blessed.

We are only under the law if we sin intentionally. When I see a police cruiser go by with lights flashing I don't wonder what I did wrong. I wonder what someone else did wrong. It is the sinner that has to pay close attention to the law, not one who obeys the law. If obeying the law becomes part of your nature, you don't even think about it. Rather you think about how to help others, not how to hurt them. You can't entertain both thoughts at once, you'd go nuts.

.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us St_Worm2. To be clear if you take some time to read what is written here no one is telling you that our righteousness comes from the law so your scriptures here are not relevant to the OP.

To be clear so there is no misunderstandings We are only saved by GRACE through faith and not of ourselves it is a gift of God *EPHESIANS 2:8. OBEDIENCE to God's LAW is not how we are saved it is the FRUIT of God's work in us as we BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD. If our faith has no fruit it is dead *JAMES 2:18-20; 26 and our tree will be cast down and thrown into the fire *MATTHEW 3:10; 7:19-20; 13:49-50.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

God bless

Absolutely, OWG this is what ROMANS 3:19 is talking about good analogy. Sorry I would rate peoples posts here but for past reasons I am not able to at the moment. Good post.

The Law is extremely useful to us, both as our "rigid schoolmaster" in salvation, and in other ways as well.

Here is a helpful article that explains what is commonly referred to as the threefold use of the law:

Its first function is to be a mirror reflecting to us both the perfect righteousness of God and our own sinfulness and shortcomings. As Augustine wrote, “the law bids us, as we try to fulfill its requirements, and become wearied in our weakness under it, to know how to ask the help of grace.” The law is meant to give knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20; 4:15, 5:13, 7:7-11), and by showing us our need of pardon and our danger of damnation to lead us in repentance and faith to Christ (Galatians 3:19-24).

A second function, the “civil use,” is to restrain evil. Though the law cannot change the heart, it can to some extent inhibit lawlessness by its threats of judgement, especially when backed by a civil code that administers punishment for proven offenses (Deuteronomy 13:6-11; 19:16-21; Romans 13:3-4). Thus it secures civil order, and serves to protect the righteous from the unjust.

Its third function is to guide the regenerate into the good works that God has planned for them (Ephesians 2:10). The law tells God’s children what will please their heavenly Father. It could be called their family code. Christ was speaking of this third use of the law when He said that those who become His disciples must be taught to do all that He had commanded (Matthew 28:20), and that obedience to His commands will prove the reality of one’s love for Him (John 14:15). The Christian is free from the law as a system of salvation (Romans 6:14; 7:4, 6; 1 Corinthians 9:20; Galatians 2:15-19, 3:25), but is “under the law of Christ” as a rule of life (1 Corinthians 9:21; Galatians 6:2).” ~Ligonier Ministries, Reformation Study Bible

Hi St_Worm2 great post. I would rate it if I could but not able to rate anything at the moment. Thanks for sharing. It supports what I am sharing here in the OP.

God bless

OBEDIENCE to God's LAW is not how we are saved it is the FRUIT of God's work in us as we BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD.
Hello again LoveGodsWord, would you explain the difference between "obedience to God's Law" (which you rightly say is the fruit of our salvation), and "following His Word" (which, along with believing, you seem to be saying is required for salvation).

Thanks again! (I'm just trying to get a handle on what you believe, which was also the point of my questions about ~the "news"/the "bad news"/the Good News"~ in my opening reply to you)

Hello St_Worm2, Good question. I will look to answer this with a lot of scripture detail as an answer to Question # 4 of the OP a little latter as I have run out of time at the moment. But simply obedience to Gods' Law is the result of a new heart to love which we receive by faith as we believe and follow God's word according to the new covenant promise *HEBREWS 8:10-12.

We need to be saved from the inside out as sin originates in the thoughts and feelings *MATTHEW 5. Salvation is from the inside out. We need to be born again with a new heart to love and it is this very love that establishes God's LAW in the life of those who believe and follow Gods' Word through faith (the fruit) *ROMANS 3:31; ROMANS 8:1-4; ROMANS 13:8-10; JAMES 2:8-12; MATTHEW 22:36-40; 1 JOHN 3:6-9. Will post more on this one latter when I have some more time.

I think I have responded very clearly as to what I believe in post # 12 above and that is We are only saved by GRACE through faith and not of ourselves it is a gift of God *EPHESIANS 2:8.

God bless.

Hello @LoveGodsWord, I agree with most everything you just said, but I'm still not sure about the difference between our being "obedient to God's word" (as the ~fruit~ of our salvation) on the one hand, and our need to believe AND "follow God's word" ~in order to be saved~ on the other? IOW, what is the difference between "obeying" and "following" God's word in regards to our salvation, and that whether it concerns coming to saving faith (justification) or remaining saved (perseverance/sanctification)?

Thanks :)

Thanks!

--David

The "bad news" is we live in a completely fallen world .... the GOOD news is it's (this world) is not going to last forever and those who accept the Lord will receive eternal life in a new and perfect world He will create.

Jesus is the remedy!

And, the laws of God will be written on our hearts at that time, not on tablets of stone (there will be no 'stony hearts' there).
Because loving all as self is a way of life, not a rule or religion.
