Trump critics have criticized Trump for expressing hope in these difficult times. But what does Dr Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force say?

'The president is talking about hope for people and it's not an unreasonable thing to hope for people,' Dr Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said at the daily press briefing.

You defend him at all times.

Trump is clinging to his feeling that a malaria drug widely available could be the answer-in-waiting to an outbreak spreading around the nation, shutting down major parts of the economy, and posing the biggest challenge he has faced as president. Calmly and quietly, Fauci insists that the science is not yet there to validate Trump's hope. Neither man directly challenged the other.

Trump says hydroxychloroquine could be answer to COVID, but Fauci says not yet

You can do both as more and more cities close businesses and more and more people stay home ( particularly in the states/areas that are less affected will be able to get over it more quickly.

Fauci has a track record of being the fact-based counterpoint to the Trump administration's upbeat assessments of the coronavirus outbreak. For much longer than that, he's specialized in the same calm and persistent repetition of the information he thinks his audience — whether the public or physicians — needs to know.

Weeks ago, after Fauci said that even with all deliberate speed a vaccine could take a year to 18 months, Trump told a political rally one could be ready “relatively soon."

Trump vs Fauci: President's gut sense collides with science

For me and especially for or someone Trump's age a year to 18 months is relatively soon. I suspect there is or will be a vaccine out there in what even a young person would consider relatively soon but it will not be available to the public for months due to federal regulations put in place to safeguard the public. It would not do to put a vaccine out there that ended up being worse than the disease it purported to a stop. Trump being optimistic with Fauci right there damping down optimism probably delivers the exact right tone. We don't want people ignoring good medical advice because they think there is a cure right around the corner, but we also don't want them to become panicked or depressed to the point of suicide thinking there will be no end to this.

Straw-man - I doubt you will find any Trump critic here who is opposed to expressions of hope per se. What we object to are his unrealistic claims. While these claims are indeed hope-inspiring, they might encourage people to behave recklessly or otherwise not be prepared for the gravity of what is to come.

You say "could be", and "he hopes". Whats there to defend? Hes not wrong to express hope or to say it could be an answer that might help in this fight. "It's not an unreasonable thing to hope for people" Dr Fauci said.

Exactly. Trump has repeatedly made claims about the outbreak that are not based in reality.

“I would wish that that would stop because we have a much bigger problem here than trying to point out differences … When I have made recommendations he’s taken them; he’s never countered or overridden me; the idea of pitting one against the other is just not helpful...."

Agree, but not the point. The OP is a clear strawman - no Trump-opponent has devalued hope. The OP makes it sound otherwise. What we have been objecting to are unrealistic claims. And when people accept those unrealistic claims, and act and think accordingly, that is very much part of the 'bigger problem'.

There is not much realistic probability that any large amount of people are that stupid as to behave recklessly only because Donald Trump of all people said something was going to be great.

Trump expressed hope that a drug might help fight this virus. Critics claim that hope is reckless. However hes just hoping.

Hope- Hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty. The audacity of Hope!

Here is what Dr. Fauci says:

"When asked Sunday by Science magazine’s Jon Cohen about having to stand in front of the nation as “the representative of truth and facts” when “things are being said that aren’t true and aren’t factual,” the 79-year-old said there is only so much he can do.

I can’t jump in front of the microphone and push him down,” Fauci said, referencing Trump. “OK, he said it. Let’s try and get it corrected for the next time.

Fauci gets frank about Trump: ‘I can’t jump in front of the microphone and push him down’

"Dr. Anthony Fauci and his tendency to set the scientific record straight have become a source of aggravation for President Donald Trump"

Trump is reportedly getting frustrated with Dr. Fauci's 'blunt approach' during White House press conferences
