I do not understand the "toilet paper panic" in Australia and the USA.

We have normal toilet paper situation in the EU and we have closed borders, schools and all shops except of food shops and drug stores, while you have no such restrictive measures.

Can somebody explain why is the toilet paper such a problem in the USA/Australia? I would guess that normal people would care about food, water and medications more. Toilet paper sounds funny.

Over the decades, the U.S. has become a nation based in fear. Our news and entertainment networks push fear on a daily basis. Our political environment is all about fear. It's fear, fear, fear, all day, every day. It's no surprise to me whatsoever that people go into a panic at a moment's notice, even when it comes to things that have little to nothing to do with the actual problem.

Yeah, I don't understand it either. I've been mildly aware from the news that coronavirus has been spreading, but I wasn't aware (until two days ago) that there was any kind of buying frenzy going on until I showed up at the grocery store for my normal toiletries purchase......and found that the toilet paper shelves had been wiped out. Then, yesterday, I likewise found the competitor grocery store shelves wiped out. Everyone seems to wants to do a lot of swiping to keep on wiping ...

... and I'm thinking, what's up with all that?! :dontcare:

I understand if people are buying desinfection, respirator masks etc. But toilet paper? What are they preparing for? Lol.

I would say you've hit a definite cord of truth, there, bekkilyn. Perhaps some of this survivalist mentality has come because of several factors? One of which is the factor you've touched upon about 'Fear Sensationalism'? What might some other social factors be in all of this?

"Fear Sensationalism," aka Doom inappropriate content. The last time I bought TP, I bought two packages instead of the usual one, and I didn't even need to fight anyone. A few days early can make all the difference.

Two packages? Oh my! ^_^

What's funny for me is that I had actually bought a new package of TP about two or three weeks ago and completely forgot about it. So, after being stunned to find empty shelves at the store because I was going to buy another package since my son made a comment to me that he couldn't find any toilet paper in the house, my wife revealed the package I had already bought. So, at least I'm good on that front (or back), for now.

I'd heard that people were panicking over tissues too. I'm expecting to see this store in the news soon due to a riot over the two cases of tissues that are left. :)

(Or are those napkins? Well, same difference. If it's even *close* to TP, it's fair game!)

I wonder if portable bidet bottles will become a thing now.

Y'know, I understand coronvirus isn't really anything to simply sneeze at, but I don't understand how a flu-virus that has a roughly 2 or 3 percent mortality rate means we should all stock up on toilet paper. One would think that some political pundits somewhere are stoking up people's fears. And I don't appreciate that.

If people begin to riot over TP, then I can only say that we have a deeper problem of selfishness (and unbelief) in our current world than I had originally perceived.

I didn't even know what a bidet bottle was, so ...... I had to quickly look it up. ^_^

Well people riot over worthless junk on Black Friday and other such "holidays", so it wouldn't at all surprise me.

I haven't shopped on Black Friday for over 10 years, so I guess I've missed out on all of the social fun that goes on during that jolly time of the year. o_O

Most of Europe uses Bidet's---very few in US. Never understood why they didn't catch on in the US. We'd rather wipe out the forests to make toilet paper than switch to Bidet's!

So, why the toilet paper frenzy, among anything? Are there really that many panicky, survivalist minded people in the U.S.? Seriously? C'mon!
There is the potential of stores being closed. TP and water are two things with few substitutes. If you don't have TP you can't flush what you wipe with. You have to save or store it. The smaller stores and grocery stores seem to have plenty.

Who says you have to flush? There are such things as reusable cloth diapers ...

It's not the End of the World if we have to handle a little poo-poo, just like they use to in the olden days---with olden days basically being all those centuries up until about the time that Einstein came along. :dontcare:
