Despite the source of this article, I have believed that this is sometimes the case, for many years now.
Well that's fine that you believe that, on the other hand this article is fake. Which was the point I was making.

Yes a Psychiatrist friend of mine has concluded the same thing.
He has just given up on the profession and is in training for Christian counselling.

This has been clear to me for years, in fact another Psychiatrist asked me to pray for a client as she had reached the end of her resources.

It is tragic that the church has abdicated its responsibility to minister in this area.

Thanks for pointing that out. Apparently I'm not the only one who has this understanding; whether or not some unscrupulous (or possessed) people have to make up stories to support this understanding.

I have a friend who has a degree in Psychology; but she won't take advantage of a career in that field; because she has come to the conclusion that the institutions are full of demonic activity; and that the discipline makes use of pharmakeia, of which the Father calls her not to take part in.

i know that demons love possessing mental ill people because they are easy targets with their sick minds you can make a mental ill person believe anything if you pester them long enough with your lies. As a mental ill person i have had it many times that i was full of evil spirits after i had a psychosis but the truth of God's love would always rescue me again and His love would cast them all out. However with the demons gone my mental illness would still stay and i still need medication to stop myself from going psychotic.

So i reckon mental ill people are more prone to demonic attack for when their minds go ill they can not differentiate between truth and lies at times, which leaves them wide open to attack, but mental illness is not caused by demonic activity, just as much as diabetes isn't caused by demons. Mental illness more often than not is just that an illness of the mind.

Theres a wonderful resource called Google Scholar https://scholar.google.com where you can look up peer reviewed research and information from academics and scholars and expect a bit of truth in it. I think half of the websites on the net get their information off the back of a breakfast cereal packet and i think that one has the job of attracting religious people to expose them to political manipulation, not presenting factual information.

He is even writing unbiased book about it that probably sells better with demons than dementia.

"Richard Gallagher is a board-certified psychiatrist and a professor of clinical psychiatry at New York Medical College. He is at work on a book about demonic possession in the United States."

tulc(will just leave this here) :sorry:

A Wiki article alone is hardly authoritative. Perhaps a more objective, well researched and peer reviewed source would be preferable? My initial reaction would be to trust a Wiki article only slightly more than a source I never heard of before. Nonetheless I would always prefer a much more reliable source than Wiki to be convinced that some other source was a complete crackpot .

I’ve helped clergy from multiple denominations and faiths to filter episodes of mental illness — which represent the overwhelming majority of cases — from, literally, the devil’s work

The article ought to be judged on its own merits, not smeared because of someone's doubts of the site. 98% of it was, in fact, simply lifted from a Washington Post article of the same day, with the other 2% being simple introduction. So if the article is bad, blame WaPo.

I found the article fair, balanced, and restrained. The quote above is typical of the author's professional objectivity. He's not saying all mental illness is direct demonization. But he's saying a small portion of it is.

Unless christians 'peer review' themselves, scientists are oblivious to spiritual matters, in the bible there were 'lunatics' but also people with problems with spirits, for once i can testify what the doctors call 'ocd intrusive thoughts' is an spiritual problem, i was cured of it immediately after i expulsed an evil spirit from me.

Authoritative? No, but a good place to start if you're interested in finding out about things. They usually have links and suggest other places to check out for more information on a subject.

I posted the link because it was pretty clear the headline didn't actually reflect the content of the article. The way it's worded makes it sound like he's saying all mental illness is demonic/demons and that's not even sort of what the article is saying.

It is tragic that the church has abdicated its responsibility to minister in this area.

You need to have been oppressed in the same way on order to offer any help, but we keep saying those people are insane (or we never have time for them) so there is never really a representative from that type of battle in the church.

Consider how much of an issue it would be to have a minister that has dealt with alleged psychological disorders (but has gained victory).

People also don't [want to] have the patience to "deal" with those types of problems... So those people are just lost in the fog of war.

Would you post a link to the WaPo article?
It's right there on the linked article page.

BTW, I would readily agree that the site did twist its headline and to a lesser extent its lead-in of the story, to make demon possession a more universal cause of mental illness than the WaPo story claims. Beyond that the article is as I described.
