God created animals. They are not made in His image. They do not have a soul in the sense that man has a soul. They operate on instinct, not reason and logic. Animals do not have free will.

It depends on how you define soul. I read some commentary once that made sense to me on that subject. The idea was that animals have souls that animate them. Their souls give them life, personality, intelligence, and other characteristics of humans. But what is lacking in animals is a spirit. The spirit is a higher order characteristic found only in mankind that allows us to recognize and reach out to God, something lacking in animals.

Bec the "soul" (Heb: nefesh) is the life principle without which an animal dies. According to Leviticus, the nefesh is in the blood. Animals also have a spirit (Heb: ruach).

Animals do reason things out, or they would not be able to hunt, hide, trust. And so they do have free-will to make choices.

Both man and animals have a living soul and the breath of life and a spirit.

Genesis 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature [soul] that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

living= 02416 chay
creature = 05315 nephesh

Genesis 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature [soul] after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

living= 02416 chay
creature = 05315 nephesh

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

living= 02416 chay
soul= 05315 nephesh

Both man and animals are a "living soul" according to God.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Man has the "breath of life".

Genesis 7:14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
Genesis 7:15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

Animals also have the breath of life.

1 Corinthians 15:39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.

Man and animals have different flesh, but both are a living soul and have the breath of life.

Ecclesiastes 3:18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
Ecclesiastes 3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath [ru^ach]; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
Ecc 3:20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

What befalls the flesh of animals will also befall the flesh of man. Animals and man have the same breath! Breath here is ru^ach meaning spirit!

"Soul" is a philosophical concept that posits a life force that animates what otherwise would be dead tissue. This was later developed into the concept that humans had an immortal soul while animals had a soul that died with their bodies. To use the language of science, all this constitutes a hypothesis but, due to the fact that there is no hard evidence and no conceivable way of getting any, it fails to rise to the level of even being a theory.

Seems Pete hit it there?

Sometimes we don't think that to be fair because, we love our animals and other animals so much. I leave fairness up to God only.

Hey, if I run into some of my old dead and gone animals in heaven -- great -- but, if not I know that there will be animals there and no one will miss anything in Heaven.

Not sure it all matters too much?
Well, maybe on this earth it does?
But, not on the New Earth.

Agree. And animals cannot make moral choices on their own.

I believe animals have souls, but have no proof for it.

I hope I get all of my pets back someday, that would be awesome.

Animals do reason things out, or they would not be able to hunt, hide, trust. And so they do have free-will to make choices.

Both man and animals have a living soul and the breath of life and a spirit.

I know us Corgi's have souls!
I agree with the above statements. In message #6, I wrote, 'Animals also have a spirit (Heb: ruach). Psalm 104 says about animals:

29 When you hide your face, they are terrified;
when you take away their ruach, they die and return to the dust.
When you send your ruach, they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.

Notice that God takes away ruach, and sends ruach. It doesn’t say he destroys ruach; he takes it. It doesn’t say he creates ruach; he sends it. Animals have a spirit / ruach as we also see in the episode of the Flood that ruach is used to refer to the spirit of all life on earth, both man and animal:

Gen 6:17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the ruach of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.

Now, what happens when a person dies? Is it any different? The answer is no. The ruach / spirit returns to God. We see this in:

Ecclesiastes 12:7
...and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the ruach returns to God who gave it.

Job 34:14-15
If he should take back his ruach to himself,
and gather to himself his breath,
all flesh would perish together,
and all mortals return to dust.

Edit: Other verses showing that animals have a spirit in them:

Gen 7:15 Pairs of all the animals that have the ruach of life in them went to Noah in the ark.

Eccl 3:19 For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same ruach, and man has no advantage over the beasts; for all is vanity.

Dr. Ken Ring found out in his research on near death experiences that one NDE in six involved a meeting with a previously deceased pet.

Little Colton Burpo stated that he saw all kinds of animals in heaven and so did Mr. Dean Braxton who flatlined for an hour and forty five minutes.

In the Book of Revelation it is stated that Messiah returns riding on a white horse.... in the Psalms it says Messiah returns riding on a cherub...... so.... it would seem that some cherubs can be in the form of a horse.

Rev 19:11

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war."

Psa 18:10

And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
