I think most freethinking people recognize that an impeachment without charges of a statutory crime is a waste of time.

Apparently, Trump's own defense team disagrees...

On Monday, a 1998 video of Dershowitz appearing on CNN surfaced, showing the former Harvard Professor saying that a president does not have to commit a crime in order to be impeached.

“It certainly doesn’t have to be a crime if you have somebody who completely corrupts the office of president and who abuses trust and who poses great danger to our liberty,” he told CNN more than 20 years ago. “You don’t need a technical crime.”
Dershowitz's 1998 comments on impeachment resurface ahead of Trump trial

Edit: Dershowitz says that he has changed his mind recently. I guess that's what lawyers do.

The GAO however, has found that Trump did in fact break the law, so it's a moot point.

No actually, it’s not a moot point. The articles transmitted by the House do not refer to a statutory crime. The GAO can issue whatever statement it wishes but that has no real bearing on the articles the Senate received. The Senate trial is based on the articles issued by the House and nothing else.

They do. It's a crime to even solicit political help from a foreign source.

It's non-partisan confirmation that Trump illegally withheld aid from Ukraine to coerce them into helping him against a political rival.

The Senate trial is based on the articles issued by the House and nothing else.

Which is why the GAO finding that Trump broke the law is important.

There’s nothing stopping Nancy and House Democrats from adding another article of impeachment to what has already been turned over to the Senate.

Why haven’t they done it already?

I don't care how they screwed up, I don't care what they 'should' have done.
If the Republicans don't allow documents, which they aren't going to, and witnesses, they aren't any better. Obviously they haven't chosen to take the high road either.

And I just missed hearing something important. I need to just listen and not be trying to write at the same time.
Whether we care or not matters not. It is not the job of the US Senate to do the work of the US House of Representatives. If the House managers want to call more witnesses and produce more documents it means their articles and the actual impeachment vote was premature.

They won't because it would be an overt admission of what we already know...The articles of impeachment are based on hearsay testimony and pseudo narrative of Adam Schiff.

That's the first article of impeachment. Thought you knew.

Donald J. Trump has abused the powers of the Presidency, in that:

Using the powers of his high office, President Trump solicited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, in the 2020 United States Presidential election.

He did so through a scheme or course of conduct that included soliciting the Government of Ukraine to publicly announce investigations that would benefit his reelection, harm the election prospects of a political opponent, and influence the 2020 United States Presidential election to his advantage.

There's no question about whether or not he did this. Witnesses to the conversation confirmed it and documents show that he withheld aid, pending political assistance from the government of Ukraine. Further, the GAO has confirmed that such withholding of aid violated the law.

And it is a felony to even solicit help against a political rival from a foreign government.

That's not what happened here.

That's the gist of the whole thing. If you look back to the beginning of this, the Department of Justice ruled that it did not constitute a "thing of value" violating any campaign finance laws. The Democrats refused to accept that ruling.

He isn't accused of breaking campaign finance laws.

He isn't accused of breaking any law at all. But the accusations of foreign interference in our elections describe campaign finance laws.

No they don't.

The poll:
SurveyUSA asked 4,096 registered voters whether witnesses with firsthand knowledge should be allowed to testify, with 71 percent of Republicans, 93 percent of Democrats, and 81 percent of Independents saying witnesses should be allowed to testify. Only 15 percent of Republicans said that they should not be allowed to testify, while 4 percent of Democrats, and 7 percent of Independents said they shouldn't. Only 3 percent of Democrats were unsure, with 12 percent of Independents and 14 percent of Republicans answering not sure.
71% of Republicans want Mitch McConnell to call witnesses at Trump impeachment trial, new poll shows

No point in denial.
