Cognitive dissonance is something we will all face in our faith journeys. Can you think of times when it affected you and how you handled it? There are good and bad ways to approach it and I consider them in the following article:

I think it’s important to address internal disturbances. Shelving and ignoring our feelings rarely solves the problem. It exacerbates them and the tentacles branch into new areas causing disruptions and worsening our condition.

Fortunately for me, self-examination was a long-term practice before my reconciliation to God. I was accustomed to digging deep and confronting unpleasantness and dichotomies. I’m not afraid to challenge a belief or conviction. Inner harmony is more important than validation.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was my growing discomfort with religion and its narrowness. The should’s were repressive and often led to arguments and iterations of one upmanship from those who disagreed. The rules didn’t correlate with my experiences or the peace I’d found with Him. When I reached the point where God and Christ were all and the rest fell aside. I grew deeper in Him.

The greater value of all of this was freeing myself from restrictions and giving my spirit the room it required for authentic expression. It didn’t need to mirror my neighbor to point someone to God. And I didn’t limit myself to the way things were always done. I leaned in and embraced the gifts and talents He provided and utilized them.

It strengthened my resolve and the gains occurred more frequently. I took comfort in His design and made purpose my central theme. The end result is an ability to reach and inspire others to do the same and a willingness to partner with the Holy Spirit as He directs the lost to Him.

The final peg in all of this is my associations. It’s important we have people in our lives who are willing to tell the truth. I require companions that are capable of saying hard things and challenging thoughts or behaviors which may be a hindrance. They’re my iron. Mutual edification occurs and betterment is the spoil.

Enjoyed the article, thank you for sharing with us and others. I guess I had misunderstood the term cognitive dissonance - I thought it was the disturbance created when trying to reconcile seemingly unreconcilable beliefs or facts, but here it is the difference/dissonance/disturbance created between belief and behavior (or perhaps between belief and desired behavior).

1. Being a Christian yet voting for abortion is one example that can be seen in society. I don' know why people keep doing that.
2. Knowing that God will protect us - and yet locking doors and having a gun for self defense is another example that is even more common.

You offer an incomplete array of options. There are not just three choices of response. There are a few others. One, cognitive dissidence may also be appropriately called righteous indignation, if one is basing their position solely upon God's given in His Word. There is absolutely no need or actually allowance to change one's position based upon other human perspectives, opinions, conjectures, or high-in-the-sky intellectualism in such a case. This is where apologetics comes into usefulness; not change. God's Truths are absolute and we would be amiss to abandon them which we are doing when we change them; as if we knew better than the Creator and Sustainer of us and the whole universe.

That having been said, we should always be ready to entertain the thoughts of another who differs from us, at least with all that is in us to do so. God loves them whoever they are and through our connection God may speak through us to affect needed change in their life a change which may not occur for years. Additionally, sometimes we Christians NEED to have our position(s) challenged due to our own misunderstanding or forgetfulness of God's Word. We NEED to always endeavor to be HUMBLE. Such a challenge should never be settled out of God's Word and by mere human word. "5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." (Bible Gateway passage: Proverbs 3:5-6 - English Standard Version) And, "16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God[a] may be complete, equipped for every good work." (Bible Gateway passage: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 - English Standard Version ) And in our battles with evil every day of our life we are told in Ephes 6 that although most of our armor is defensive the ONE thing we are given to arm our body with to defeat evil or darkness, the "sword", is GOD'S Word. GOD'S WORD, not our intelligence, common sense, logic, rationale, a general consensus, or anything else. Whenever you are debating something relative to God if someone does not want the Word of God brought into purvey it is because they are trying to disarm you of the only REAL effective weapon you have in direct battle with one who is enemy of God. They would have you rely upon yourself and if they can get you there, away from God, they will have you right on their turf and out of yours. Jesus was/is God the Son. Jesus had infinite wisdom and knowledge. How did Jesus respond to satan when tempted those three times? Did Jesus debate or try to enlighten? No, Jesus quoted God's Word EVERY time and defeated satan EVERY time. Are we better than Jesus to try to use our own understandings and reasoning as opposed to God's Word???

As I have said elsewhere, if Noah took notice and changed to what everybody else was doing or thinking because his huge monstrosity of a boat was in people's way or causing an eyesore or making them look "bad" or labeled fanatical, the human race would have gone extinct with the flood. I sure am glad that ONE person had the guts and personal integrity to follow God and ignore everyone's ungodly perspective around him.

I touched on criminalising abortion in my earlier article. I said "Another strategy to dull the cognitive dissonance, avoid confronting my personal failings and keep telling myself that I'm a good person would have been to find an issue that does not require any personal sacrifice but on which I could claim the moral high ground to act as a smokescreen for my selfishness in other areas. I think that criminalising abortion is sadly often used in this way. When not combined with measures that involve personal sacrifice like offering to adopt, give directly or pay more in taxes to cover the healthcare costs of the unborn and children etc., it looks a lot like virtue signalling."

What you have basically said is you believe that you are right, that your interpretation of the Bible is the right one and that you are unwilling to consider other ideas. If your interpretation of the Bible leads to practical, self sacrificial rather than superficial love of neighbour and even enemy as Jesus commanded, then you may be in a position to claim your so called righteous indignation. However often such indignation is actually the dissonance of realising deep down that you don't really love many neighbours and that you may even despise those you disagree with.

Well, consider these:
"3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. "
Pasted from <Bible Gateway passage: 2 Timothy 4:3-4 - New American Standard Bible>

"8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ."
Pasted from <Bible Gateway passage: Colossians 2:8 - New International Version>

"2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
Pasted from <Bible Gateway passage: Romans 12:1-2 - New International Version>

"22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen."
Pasted from <Bible Gateway passage: Romans 1:22-32 - King James Version>

Consider these verses :

"8 You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors... 13 For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder." (James 2:8-9, 13-18)

"43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?" (Matthew 5:43-47)

"41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’" (Matthew 25:41-45)
