Virginia HB961 | 2020 | Regular Session

Don't register? You're instantly a felon.

Full bills, both pro and anti, are here: Virginia Citizens Defense League - 2020 Legislative Tracking Tool

I guess folks ought to register then.

Do we have a constitutional and inalienable right to cars? Am I a felon if I don't register my car with the state? Do I have to register my car if I don't drive it on a public road?

Believe it or not - in some places, yes. Here in Baltimore, there's such a problem with folks riding unregistered dirt bikes and ATV's around town that they decreed that any dirt bike has to be registered, even if it's just sitting in your driveway.

You do not even have to have it registered if it is not driven on PUBLIC highways.

Yes, you most certainly do.

I've been told that there's a comma somewhere in that sentence that voids the "well-regulated militia" part.
Do you seriously think that people who commit mass shootings would follow the law? Very few mass shootings would be stopped and that is not how most gun deaths happen anyway.

If it is sitting in the yard there is no requirement to register, even if there was how would that be enforced.

That's the point--the government did know who they were and what kind of guns they owned.
still how do you call them up if there us no standing military?

The way some people behave when I talk about changing driving habits to use less gas, they think it is a requirement for Freedom tm.

You seem to forget the first half of the 2nd amendment. "Well regulated" is the phrase I am focusing on.

Honestly, given the destructive potential of guns, I am surprised we don't require everyone that wants a gun to pass gun safety, show proficiency at a gun range, and sign up for 'accident' insurance.

It is not just a right, bit a responsibility as well.

Are you familiar with the term "prefatory clause?" Heller v. DC ruling?

The operative part of the 2nd amendment is "The right of the people"

We are the people:

Amendment II. BEARING ARMS

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA v. HELLER

We, ALL PEOPLE, have an inalienable right to bear arms, because we have the right of self-defense, which is self-evident.

That's because I deleted it and decided to post a reply directly to the first post.

I'm a gun enthusiast, and own several.....and my opinion is...........so what?

What do you lose by registering your assault firearm? You're not losing your constitutional right to posses one.

Registration turns an inalienable right into a "privilege." There's a subreddit for /r/AsAGunOwner narratives.

We had a mass stabbing in Colorado Springs yesterday.
Maybe we need to start registering steak knives.
That proves that you can kill people with other things and as I have already stated very few people a year are killed in honest to goodness unprovoked mass shootings.

It would make it much harder for them--and for criminals as well--to get guns.
Very few mass shootings would be stopped and that is not how most gun deaths happen anyway.
Too bad about the suicides, but at least they are volunteering to be shot. It's those who are not volunteering for it who concern me. And why are you primarily concerned with mass shootings? I think criminals with guns are a bigger problem.

I haven't seen an anti-gun person yet blame Dodge for Charlottesville.

How?

Lets address why people want to kill themselves. The tool they choose to do the deed is rather irrelevant.

Very few people are killed in unprovoked mass shootings that means that the main thing they are trying to stop kills very few people.

If it is sitting in the yard there is no requirement to register,

You're just wrong. This sort of law may not exist in many places, but it does exist in some places. You can read the law for yourself:

https://www.baltimorepolice.org/sit...e19PoliceOrdinances-Subtitile40-DirtBikes.pdf

even if there was how would that be enforced.

Cop drives by. Cop sees a dirt bike parked in plain view without registration and without being immobilized. Cop writes ticket.

Registration turns an inalienable right into a "privilege."

No, it doesn't. It just puts fences around some of the ways in which you can exercise those rights. Free speech is still a right even though I have to get a permit to stage a rally.
