Is believing in Jesus enough to be saved?

No. Even the demons believe, and they shudder in dear.

You must believe by doing. To not only being an hearer of the Word but a doer. Repent, change your ways, follow Him and the way He walked and you will be saved.

What do you make of John 3:16?

Edit: Took out John 6:29 because I'm not sure it applies here. (if that's the right way to put it)

Jesus did not die for demons, so their faith in Him is not salvic.

But he showed mercy even towards demons.

Just believing that He is, I guess.

What would "believing in Jesus" mean?
Believing His words about Himself - that He came from God, that He is the God's only eternal Son, beliveing that He died for our sins and was resurrected.

If you truly believe this, your sins are washed away by His blood on the cross and His righteousness is imputed in you, so you are saved.

Then, because all this will make you born again, you will see changes in your life and in your style of thinking. Its a consequence, not a way of how to be saved, as some make this mistake.

Is believing in Jesus enough to be saved?
Simply put no believing in Jesus is not enough to be saved. Belief in God and truly knowing and having faith in who he is are two completely different things. For example Satan and the demonic believe in Jesus but they choose not to follow him. There are people out there who believe in Jesus but choose not to follow him either. Becoming saved is as follows:

1. Someone comes to a recognition that God is in their life or maybe feel like there is something missing. They also come to the realization that there is sin in their life and they can't escape it on their own. They need a savior.

2. They come to hear and understand the truth of who Jesus is that he is their personal savior. The person having learned who Christ is asks Jesus to forgive them of their sins and to come into their life and enter a relationship with him.

This doesn't contradict what I wrote.

We live in a day and age where believing in someone is classified as a fairly passive act. That is to say "I believe He was/is, and I believe He told the truth".

However, in Hebraic understanding, you can't believe and yet not act. For if the one you believe on says "do this" and you don't, how can you say you believe Him. Therefore believing in Him is far more active that the typical Greek mindset. We believe and do, because we believe.

In summary - to believe is to listen, to listen is to pay heed, and to pay heed to to change accordingly - so that in word and deed you honour Him. Worshipping Him in Spirit and truth.

I hope that helps.

Love & Shalom

Jesus did not die for demons, so their faith in Him is not salvic.

Even so, some historians believe in Him and that He was not mad, and even some orthodox Jews are startimg to concede He was a ptoohet. Do you think this alone will save them?

There will even be some believer's turned away from Him, who haven't truly followed Him when He says "depart from me you workers of lawlessness. I never knew you".

Here then we have 4 type of believers in Messiah.
1. Demons
2. Historians and those who deny His divinity
3. Believers who have not truly followed
4. Believer who have truly followed.

Therefore, belief in Him alone is not enough. Believing in Him (that is, putting what He said, warned and promised into action) will see you saved.

Love & Shalom

I do not understand your question. Why are "historians" some special category of people? They can believe and be saved as everybody else.

Orthodox Jews are unbelievers, because Jesus was much more than a prophet. Its not faith. Faith in Him must include His deity/lordship, death and resurrection.

Only if your definition of believing in Jesus aligns with the Bible's definition in the passages wherein belief in Jesus is said to be the means whereby one is saved (John 3:16, Acts 16:31, etc). And many twist that definition indeed and cause confusion about it. True belief in Jesus embraces His entire person, His every office, and heeds all of his words (i.e. every word of the Bible- Matthew 4:4); and hence true belief in Jesus works in accordance with these things.

It really helps with this question to study the righteous and the wicked in the Bible. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8)- so the criteria for being accepted of Him has never changed nor ever will change. Even the righteous people in the Old Testament had types and shadows of what Jesus would one day to purchase man's salvation and make it available to him. The Apostles appealed to the Old Testament and righteous men in it to illustrate what salvation by grace through faith is. You see this especially in Romans chapter 4 and Hebrews chapters 11 to 13 (the faith of the righteous in the OT by faith is seen in Hebrews chapter 11; and how we're supposed to follow their faith in principle and practically is explained in Hebrews chapters 12 and 13). Look at the Apostle Paul's example (Acts 9:6) and his commission to preach the gospel (Acts 26:12-23). Look at how the thief on the cross showed his belief in Jesus by justly condemning himself and siding with the crucified Christ publicly.

The principles and examples laid down in Scripture really answer your question. The confusion about this has come because so many dare to preach without heeding these; and because so many heed these errant preachers and read their errant conclusions back into the Bible, if they even consult the Bible at all. We can be saved though from these perilous times and be ready to meet God if we are diligent to understand and walk in every Word of God.

"6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)

But then of course we need to let the Bible define diligence. And yet we have an example of Noah in the next verse to shed light on that. If we look at his diligence and follow through on that (in terms of its principle of paying attention to and heeding the instructions of God's Word), then we can be found believing in Jesus in the way that the Bible commands us to and promises salvation in.

"7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith." (Hebrews 11:7)

But it did not make her saved.

Only faith in Christ could make her saved.

Of course. My point is that it's not an either/or situation; it's both/and. You must believe in Christ, and you must also strive to live accordingly.

Biblically, you must only believe and your belief should be visible in your life.

There is no "strive to have works to be saved" or something like this, in the Bible.

"3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." (John 17:3)

"27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. 29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name." (John 20:27-31)

"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." (1 John 2:1-6)
