Can someone tell me about the new covenant..

is it a covenant of grace mercy and peace ? Because in all the epistles well not all but most them it usually begins with mercy, grace and peace to you.. or just 2 of them..

I know Jesus blood is the blood of the new covenant the blood that’s been shed for us..
and also about the everlasting covenant I know in the Old Testament in the prophets
God spoke about doing good towards us and having his law written in our hearts and some other things that I can hardly remember of his covenant..

please help me to understand about the new covenant so I know about the covenant I am in with God..

"For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ." John 1:17

The covenant of Laws and commandments was God imposing rules and regulations on His chosen people. If the people obeyed, they were blessed. If they rebelled (their normal condition), they were cursed. Pretty basic "carrot and stick" philosophy. Israel agreed to the covenant of law. It suits humanity's deceived ego to think that he can please God.

The ultimate disgrace for Israel was to be under Roman rule. This was the state of the people that Jesus came to live with.

There was a covenant prior to the law. God made it with Abraham. God said that all the families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham's descendant. It is clear in the New Testament that Lord Jesus was that Person.

The law demanded that man obeys God. The law also proved that man cannot obey God. He could if he wanted to. God's requirements are not that hard. But the inner being of man is proud and rebellious and Israel was no different.

Lord Jesus came to resolve the problem. Adam represented all humanity in his act of disobedience to God's only restriction on him. Lord Jesus came as a man, not as God. Lord Jesus fulfilled all the righteous requirements of God in every way.

Lord Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice to God, fulfilling God's word to Abraham. God provided the sacrifice Himself. Lord Jesus has life in Himself (He is Life!) and His life was released to be the life of all who would accept Him.

God's way of sealing a covenant is with blood. A sacrificial animal sheds its blood and the covenant is in place. Lord Jesus made a covenant with God as Man, with His own blood. No other blood would do as no other blood is pure, clean and uncontaminated with sin. Because Lord Jesus made the covenant, no one can defile it, no one can void it, no one can undo it in any way. And this new covenant replaces the law. Instead of God demanding the impossible of us, the burden is on the Lord Jesus to please God.

Christians have new life within. It is the Life of Christ. Very few realise this, even though the Bible is crystal clear. Most Christians are engaged in a self-improvement program, matching themselves to God's word, trying to adapt their behaviour and failing miserably.

What we should be doing is enjoying the wonderful new life that Lord Jesus died to give us. No, it does not lead to a life of comfort and ease. It often gets more difficult. But we have the inner life of Christ to be all that we should be but cannot be. God's demands transcend outward obedience to a set of rules. The Sermon on the Mount makes that clear. There is only one Person who can live the Christian life. His name is Jesus. Trust Him with your life completely. He will never let you down. He shed His blood to prove it.

@Holy_joe - Covenants.

While the Book of Genesis doesn't specifically say the word covanent, it is clear that Adam was under a covanent with God as all the essential elements are there. There's a clear definition of the parties involved, a legally binding set of provisions that states the conditions of their relationship, the promise of blessings for obedience, and the condition for obtaining those blessings. Moreover, Hosea 6:7, in referring to the sins of Israel, says, "But like Adam they transgressed the covanent". This passage views Adam as existing in a covanent relationship that he then transgressed in the Garden of Eden.

God has always had covanent relationships with His people, from the first man to this day.

When man failed to obtain the blessing offered in the covanent of works, it was necessary for God to establish another means, one by which man could be saved. The rest of scripture after the story of the fall in Genesis 3 is God working out in history the amazing plan of redemption, whereby sinful people could come into fellowship with Himself. Once again, God clearly defines the provisions of a covanent that would specify the relationship between Himself and those He would redeem. In these specifications we find some variation in detail throughout the Old and New Testaments, but the essential elements of a covanent are all there, and the nature of those essential elements remains the same throughout the Old and New Testament.

The parties to this covanent of grace are God and the people whom He will redeem. But in our case Christ fulfills a special role as mediator (Hebrews 8:6, Hebrews 9:15, Hebrews 12:24) in which He fulfills the conditions of the covanent for us, and thereby reconciles us to God. (There was no mediator between God and man in the covanent of works)

The condition or requirement of participation in the covanent of Grace (the covanent we are currently operating in) is faith in the work of Christ our redeemer (Romans 1:17; Romans 5:1). This requirement of faith in the redemptive work of the Messiah was also the condition of obtaining the blessings of the covanent in the Old Testament as Paul clearly demonstrates through the examples of Abraham and David (Romans 4:1-15). They, like other Old Testament believers, were saved by looking forward to the work of the Messiah who was to come, and putting faith in Him.

But, while the condition of beginning the covenant of Grace is always faith in Christ's work alone, the condition of continuing in that covanent is said to be obedience to God's commands. Though this obedience did not in the Old Testament and does not in the New Testament earn us any merit with God, nonetheless, if our faith in Christ is genuine it will produce obedience (James 2:17), and obedience to Christ is in the New Testament seen as necessary evidence that we are truly believers and members of the New Covenant (1 John 2:4-6).

The promise of blessings in the covenant is a promise of eternal life with God. This promise was repeated frequently throughout the Old and New Testaments. God promised He would be their God and they would be His people. (Genesis 17:7; Jeremiah 31:33; Jeremiah 32:38-40; Ezekiel 34:30-31; Ezekiel 36:28; Ezekiel 37:26-27). That theme is picked up in the New Testament as well (2 Corinthians 6:16; 1 Peter 2:9-10) In speaking of the New Covanent the author of Hebrews quotes Jeremiah 31 (Hebrews 8:10) This blessing finds its fulfillment in the church, which is the people of God...

That said, although the essential elements of the covanent of Grace remain the same throughout the history of God's people, the specific provisions of the covanent vary from time to time.

Beginning with the covanent with Abraham (Genesis 15:1-21; Genesis 17:1-27), the essential elements of the covanent of Grace are all there. In fact Paul says that "the scripture .... preached the Gospel beforehand to Abraham" (Galatians 3:8). Moreover Luke tells us that Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, prophesied that the coming of John the Baptist to prepare the way for Christ was the beginning of Gods working to fulfill the ancient covenant promises to Abraham (Luke 1:72-73). So the covanent promises to Abraham remained in force even as they found their fulfillment in Christ (Romans 4:1-25; Galatians 3:6-18, Galatians 3:29, Hebrews 2:16; Hebrews 6:13-20)

What then is the Old Covenant in contrast with the New? It is not the whole of the Old Testament because the covanents with Abraham and David are never called old in the New Testament. Rather, only the covanent under Moses, the covanent made at Mount Sinai, is called the Old Covenant (2 Corinthians 3:14, Hebrews 8:6) to be replaced by the New Covenant in Christ. (Luke 22:20; 1 Corinthians 11:25; 2 Corinthians 3:6; Hebrews 8:8 Hebrews 8:13; Hebrews 9:15, Hebrews 12:24)

The Mosaic covanent was an administration of detailed written laws given for a time to restrain the sins of the people and to be a custodian to point people to Christ. Paul says "Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, til the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made" (Galatians 3:19) and "The law was our custodian until Christ came (Galatians 3:24).

We should not assume that there was no grace available to people from Moses to Christ, because the promise of salvation by faith that Gos had made to Abraham remained in force. (Galatians 3:16-18) Moreover although the sacrificial system of the Mosaic covanent did not really take away sins (Hebrews 10:1-4) it foreshadowed the bearing of sin by Christ, the perfect High Preist who was also the perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 9:11-28). Nevertheless the Mosaic covanent by itself with all it's detailed laws could not save people. It is not that the laws were wrong in themselves, for they were given by a Holy God, but they had no power to give people new life, and the people were not able to obey them perfectly (Galatians 3:21)

Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit working within us can empower us to obey God in a way that the Mosaic law never could (2 Corinthians 3:6). The new Covanent then, is far better because it fulfills the promises made in Jeremiah 31:31-34 as quoted in Hebrews 8. In speaking of a new covenant he treat the first as obsolete (Hebrews 8:6-13).

In this new covenant there are far greater blessings for Jesus the Messiah has come; He has lived, died, risen among us atoning once and for all for our sins (Hebrews 9:24-28) He has revealed God most fully to us (John 1:14, Hebrews 1:1-3); He has poured out the Holy Spirit on all His people in new covenant power (Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 2 Corinthians 3:4-18); He has written His laws on our hearts (Hebrews 8:10). This new covenant is the eternal covanent (Hebrews 13:20) in Christ, through which we shall forever have fellowship with God, and He shall be our God, and we His people.

Simple version: a Covenant is an agreement or contract.

Both the old Covenant and the new were contracts between God and man regarding the forgiveness of sin. Both covenants require blood sacrifice. The old required contuniual sacrifices for continued sin, the new requires only one sacrifice for all time, Jesus. That, and us accepting His sacrifice by choosing to make Him our Lord.

Probably the best place to read an epistle dedicated to the New Covenant is the book of Hebrews.

Hey, Joe. Yes, the Law of Moses was given through Moses, and were God's words to the Hebrews.

The Etenal Word came through Mary, and is God's Word made flesh, given for all mankind.

Here's the most important Old Testament New Covenant prophecy, quoted in Hebrews 8 & 10 in the New Testament. Jer 31:33-34:

“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”

Under the new Covenant God finally accomplishes the righteousness in man that were made for but cannot realize apart from Him.
"Apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
"With God all things are possible."
Matt 19:26

This is only possible with grace, and not by our own efforts, which is what it means to be "under the law". And this is why the law cannot justify us; only God can do so. And we enter this state of justice or righteousness by entering communion with Him, a relationship that we were made for and which Adam effectively dismissed. And this relationship is established by faith, itself a gift of grace which places man back in proper order with reality; the creature subjugated to the Creator. And the product of this relationship, this contact with God, is love, the very nature of God whose image He desires to transforms us into. He instituted this New Covenant when the time was ripe in human history by sending His Son, to reveal God as had never been done before so we may know Him as per Jer 31;34, and so come to believe in, trust in, and ultimately to love Him.
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." John 17:3

Every aspect of Jesus life: all His words and deeds, have this purpose as their goal.

New Covenant

When the disciples received the Holy Ghost in Acts 2, what was the reference to Joel about? And what about the part in the last verse (2:21) “that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved?”

Acts 2:16-21: “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel. And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Has there been any era where that has happened? Joel chapter 1 speaks about the devastation of the earth and the Day of the Lord (Future events).

Then Joel 2 ends with: 31: “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.” 32: “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.”

Many say we are already in God’s new covenant that was prophesied in the OT and in Acts/Hebrews.

Heb. 8:7-13 “For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”

Jer. 31:31-34 “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Do you see the direct link between Jeremiah and Hebrews? What about the parallels in Acts and Joel?

Acts 2:16-18 “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:”

First a time frame in Joel: Joel 2:1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;”

Next, it speaks of a restoration after the Day of the Lord. Then we are given a picture of the new covenant: Joel 2:28, 29 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.”

What can we conclude from this? What we have today is not the New Covenant God was talking about. Not yet. The way I read that is everyone that calls on the Lord will have salvation. Surely, that is not today. So, ask yourself: when is it?

A copy and paste concerning the events occurring before the war that destroyed the temple and Jerusalem...……..
Josephus’ Pre-War Revelation
Thus, Titus Flavius Josephus described the army in the clouds just prior to the start of the First Jewish-Roman War. A man born into a priestly lineage, who later became somewhat of a prophet to the Roman Emperor Vespasian, Josephus' account of the cloud chariots seem eerily similar to that which is dictated in the Book of Revelations : the description from Jesus that his second-coming, his judgement day, will come to earth via an army of angels, for lack of a more sophisticated description. The occurrence of this incident in the clouds was recorded by Josephus in 66 AD on the eve of the aforementioned Jewish War—a war founded in centuries of ethnic differences, and then in financial greed, before finally escalating into the religious intolerance that led to the destruction and pillaging of the Temple of Jerusalem by the Roman army.

And of course this in the scripture
Lu 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

How does God write this new covenant on the hearts of believers?

children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

Just to add to what's already been shared, Andy Stanley, IMO, does an excellent job of describing the New Covenant (and just how earth shattering it was in its advent) in this series. I think he's so easy to listen to:

Can someone tell me about the new covenant..

I have understood that the new covenant is the covenant that was announced in these:

Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Yahweh your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live. Yahweh your God will put all these curses on your enemies, and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. You shall return and obey the voice of Yahweh, and do all his commandments which I command you this day. Yahweh your God will make you plenteous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, for good: for Yahweh will again rejoice over you for good, as he rejoiced over your fathers;
Deuteronomy 30:6-9

Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh; for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says Yahweh: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.
Jeremiah 31:31-34

It means “circumcision of heart”. God’s law will be written in persons mind. And I think that happens through the words Jesus declared. The words can cause the change in persons innermost so that he is born anew, like this:

Jesus answered him, "Most assuredly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see the Kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" Jesus answered, "Most assuredly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don't marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born anew.'
John 3:3-7

as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12-13

It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
John 6:63

By his words there can happen the change. And this is how one can recognize person who is born of God:

...He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever is born of God doesn't commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn't do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn't love his brother.
1 John 3:7-10

Righteous person has the right understanding about good and right and he wants to do good freely, because he understands it is good. And then the law is truly written in persons heart.

but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.

Hey, Joe. Yes, the Law of Moses was given through Moses, and were God's words to the Hebrews.

The Etenal Word came through Mary, and is God's Word made flesh, given for all mankind.

The new covenant was with Israel and Judah. The gentiles, as Paul said, were grafted in.

I have understood that the new covenant is the covenant that was announced in these:

Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Yahweh your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, that you may live. Yahweh your God will put all these curses on your enemies, and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. You shall return and obey the voice of Yahweh, and do all his commandments which I command you this day. Yahweh your God will make you plenteous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, for good: for Yahweh will again rejoice over you for good, as he rejoiced over your fathers;

I agree. The 2 Covenant's are about two things.

#1. How God's Law is administered.

In the OT, on Mt. Sinai, God had made a Covenant with Levi to administer God's Laws and to provide for the Service of the Sanctuary through various "works of the Law" of a Priesthood. A Priesthood Abraham didn't have.

#2. How the Forgiveness or atonement of sins is accomplished.

In the OT God made a Covenant with Levi, HE gave him a Priesthood to perform Sacrificial, ceremonial "works of the Law" for the forgiveness of sins.

But the Levites, the Shepherds God placed over Israel, corrupted this Covenant and led God's People Astray.

Jer. 50:6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace.

And again;

Mal. 2:
And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.

5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.

6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

7 For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. 8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

So what did God do?

Heb. 8:6
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8 For finding fault with them, (Levi who broke God's Covenant with him) he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

So in the New Covenant these 2 things; #1. how God's Laws are Administered and #2. How sins are forgiven, is changed. No more Levite Priests to go to in order to hear the Word of God, and no more Levitical Priesthood sacrificial "Works of the Law" for the atonement of sins.

The definition of sin didn't change, only how HIS definition is administered, and how transgression of God's Laws are atoned for.

A NEW Priesthood.

Great topic, Good stuff.

From The Divine Covenants by A. W. Pink:

“The covenants occupy no subordinate place on the pages of divine revelation, as even a superficial perusal of Scripture will show. The word covenant is found no fewer than twenty-five times in the very first book of the Bible; and occurs again scores of times in the remaining books of the Pentateuch, in the Psalms and in the Prophets. Nor is the word inconspicuous in the New Testament. When instituting the great memorial of His death, the Savior said, This cup is the new covenant in my blood (Luke 22:20). When enumerating the special blessings which God had conferred on the Israelites, Paul declared that to them belonged the covenants (Rom. 9:4). To the Galatians he expounded the two covenants (4:24-31). The Ephesian saints were reminded that in their unregenerate days they were strangers to the covenants of promise. The entire Epistle to the Hebrews is an exposition of the better covenant of which Christ is mediator (8:6).

Salvation through Jesus Christ is according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God (Acts 2:23), and He was pleased to make known His eternal purpose of mercy unto the fathers, in the form of covenants, which were of different characters and revealed at various times. These covenants enter into the very nature, and pervade with their peculiar qualities, the whole system of divine truth. They have an intimate connection with each other and a common relation to a single purpose, being, in fact, so many successive stages in the unfolding of the scheme of divine grace. They treat the divine side of things, disclosing the source from which all blessings come to men, and making known the channel (Christ) through which they flow to them. Each one reveals some new and fundamental aspect of truth, and in considering them in their Scriptural order we may clearly perceive the progress of revelation which they respectively indicated. They set forth the great design of God accomplished by the redeemer of His people.

It has been well pointed out that “it is very obvious that because God is an intelligence He must have a plan. If He be an absolutely perfect intelligence, desiring and designing nothing but good; if He be an eternal and immutable intelligence, His plan must be one, eternal, all-comprehensive, immutable; that is, all things from His point of view must constitute one system and sustain a perfect logical relation in all its parts. Nevertheless, like all other comprehensive systems it must itself be composed of an infinite number of subordinate systems. In this respect it is like these heavens which He has made, and which He has hung before our eyes, as a type and pattern of His mode of thinking and planning in all providence.

“We know that in the solar system our earth is a satellite of one of the great suns, and of this particular system we have a knowledge because of our position, but we know that this system is only one of myriads, with variations, that have been launched in the great abyss of space. So we know that this great, all-comprehensive plan of God, considered as one system, must contain a great many subordinate systems which might be studied profitably if we were in the position to do so, as self-contained whole, separate from the rest” (Lectures by A. A. Hodge). That “one system” or the eternal “plan” of God was comprised in the everlasting covenant; the many “subordinate systems” are the various covenants God made with different ones from time.

The everlasting covenant, with its shadowings forth His temporal covenants, form the basis of all His dealings with His people. Many proofs of this are to be met with in Holy Writ. For example, when God heard the groanings of the Hebrews in Egypt, we are told that He remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob (Ex. 2:24; cf. 6:2-8). When Israel was oppressed by the Syrians in the days of Jehoahaz, we read, And the Lord was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (2 Kings 13:23; cf. Ps. 106:43-45). At a later period, when God determined to show mercy unto Israel, after He had sorely afflicted them for their sins, He expressed it thus, Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth (Ezek. 16:60). As the psalmist declared, He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant (111:5).

The same blessed truth is set forth in the New Testament that the covenant is the foundation from which proceed all the gracious works of God. This is rendered as the reason for sending Christ into the world: To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant (Luke 1:72). Remarkable too is that word in Hebrews 13:20: Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant. Another illustration of the same principle is found in Hebrews 10:15,16: Whereof the Holy Spirit also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them the words .. supply proof that the good which God does unto His people is grounded on His covenant. Anything which in Scripture is said to be done unto us for Christ’s sake signifies it is done by virtue of that covenant which God made with Christ as the head of His mystical body.

In like manner, when God is said to bind Himself by oath to the heirs of promise – Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath (Heb. 6:17)— it is upon the ground of His covenant engagement that He does so. In fact the one merges into the other, for in Scripture covenanting is often called by the name of swearing, and a covenant is called an oath. That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the Lord thy God, and into his oath, which the Lord thy God maketh with thee this day. . . Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath (Deut. 29:12,14). Be ye mindful always of his covenant, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations: even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac (1 Chron. 16:15,16). And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul. . .And they sware unto the Lord with a loud voice … And all Judah rejoiced at the oath (l Chron. 15:12,14, l5).

Sufficient should have already been said to impress us with the weightiness of our present theme, and the great importance of arriving at a right understanding of the divine covenants. A true knowledge of the covenants is indispensable to a correct presentation of the gospel, for he who is ignorant of the fundamental difference which obtains between the covenant of works and the covenant of grace is utterly incompetent for evangelism. But by whom among us are the different covenants clearly understood? Refer unto them to the average preacher, and you at once perceive you are speaking to him in an unknown tongue. Few today discern what the covenants are in themselves, their relations to each other, and their consequent bearings upon the design of God in the Redeemer. Since the covenants pertain unto the very “rudiments of the doctrine of Christ,” ignorance of them must cause obscurity to rest upon the whole gospel system.

During the palmy days of the Puritans considerable attention was given to the subject of the covenants, as their writings evince, particularly the works of Usher, Witsius, Blake, and Boston. But alas, with the exception of a few high Calvinists, their massive volumes fell into general neglect, until a generation arose who had no light thereon. This made it easier for certain men to impose upon them the crudities and vagaries, and make their poor dupes believe a wonderful discovery had been made in the rightly dividing of the word of truth. These men shuffled Scripture until they arranged the passages treating of the covenants to arbitrarily divide time into “seven dispensations” and partitioned off the Bible accordingly. How dreadfully superficial and faulty their findings are appear from the popular (far too popular to be of much value—Luke 16:15!) Scofield Bible, where no less than eight covenants are noticed, and nothing is said about the everlasting covenant!

If some think we have exaggerated the ignorance which now obtains upon this subject, let them put the following questions to their best-informed Christian friends, and see how many can give satisfactory answers. What did David mean when he said, Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation (1 Sam. 23:5? What is meant by The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him, and he will show them his covenant (Ps. 25:14)? What does the Lord mean when He speaks of those who take hold of my covenant (Isa. 56:6)? What does God intend when He says to the Mediator: As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant, I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water? To what does the apostle refer when he says, That the covenant, that was confirmed before of God is (or “to”) Christ (Gal. 3:17)?

Before attempting to furnish any answers to these questions, let us point out the nature of a covenant: in what it consists. “An absolute agreement between distinct persons, about the order and dispensing of things in their power, unto their mutual concern and advantage” (John Owen). Blackstone, the great commentator upon English law, speaking of the parts of a deed, says, “After warrants, usually follow covenants, or conventions, which are clauses of agreement contained in a deed, whereby either party may stipulate for the truth of certain facts, or may bind himself to perform, or give something to the other” (Vol. 2, p. 20). So he includes three things: the parties, the terms, the binding agreement. Reducing it to still simpler language, we may say that a covenant is the entering into of a mutual agreement, a benefit being assured on the fulfillment of certain conditions.

We read of Jonathan and David making a covenant (1 Sam. 18:3) which, in view of 1 Samuel 20:11-17,42, evidently signified that they entered into a solemn compact (ratified by an oath: 1 Sam. 20:17) that in return for Jonathan’s kindness in informing him of his father’s plans—making possible his escape—David, when he ascended the throne, would show mercy to his descendants: (cf. 2 Sam. 9:1). Again, in 1 Chronicles 11:3 we are told that all the elders of Israel (who had previously been opposed to him) came to David and he made a covenant with them, which, in the light of 2 Samuel 5:1-3 evidently means that, on the consideration of his captaining their armies against the common foe, they were willing to submit unto him as their king. Once more, in 2 Chronicles 23:16 we read of Jehoiada the priest making a covenant with the people and the king that they should be the Lord’s people, which, in the light of what immediately follows obviously denotes that he agreed to grant them certain religious privileges in return for their undertaking to destroy the system of Baal worship. A careful consideration of these human examples will enable us to understand better the covenants which God has been pleased to enter into.

Now as we pointed out in previous paragraphs, God’s dealings with men are all based upon His covenant engagements with them—He promising certain blessings upon their fulfillment of certain conditions. This being so, as G. S. Bishop pointed out, “It is clear that there can be but two and only two covenants possible between God and men—a covenant founded upon what man shall do for salvation, a covenant founded upon what God shall do for him to save him: in other words, a Covenant of Works and a Covenant of Grace” (Grace in Galatians, p. 72). Just as all the divine promises in the Old Testament are summed up in two chief ones—the sending of Christ and the pouring out of the Spirit—so all the divine covenants may be reduced unto two, the other subordinate ones being only confirmations or adumbrations of them, or having to do with their economical administration.

We shall then take up in the chapters which follow, first, the everlasting covenant or covenant of grace, which God made with His elect in the person of their head, and show how that is the sure foundation from which proceed all blessings unto then. Next we shall consider the covenant of works, that compact into which the Creator entered with the whole race in the person of their human and federal head, and show how that had to be broken before the blessings agreed upon in the covenant of grace could be bestowed. Then we shall look briefly at the covenant God made with Noah, and more fully at the one with Abraham, in which the everlasting covenant was shadowed forth. Then we shall ponder the more difficult Sinaitic covenant, viewing it as a confirmation of the covenant of works and also in its peculiar relation to the national polity of Israel. Some consideration will also have to be given to the Davidic covenant, concerning which we feel greatly in need of more light. Finally, we shall point out how the everlasting covenant has been administered under the old and new covenants or economies. May the Holy Spirit graciously preserve us from all serious error, and enable us to write that which shall be to the glory of our covenant God and the blessing of His covenant people.”

The New Covenant is... the 'everlasting covenant' mentioned in Old Testament times. See Galatians 3 and Romans 4 about the Promise by Faith first given to Abraham, 430 years before the law was given, and before the token of circumcision was given. Abraham believed and it was counted to him as righteousness. Thus those of Faith (on The Gospel) are become the children of Abraham according to Paul.

1. There was a previous world prior to this present world that began in Genesis 1. Per the parable about Satan in Ezekiel 28, God had originally created Satan perfect in his ways, until iniquity was found in him. Satan was created a heavenly cherub that covereth, i.e, his job being to guard God's Throne. Instead, Satan coveted God's Throne for himself, wanting to be God. So Satan drew a third of the angels ("stars" in Rev.12:3-4) to earth and rebelled. God ended that old world.

2. God put this present world creation into bondage of corruption, and it like us (inside) seeks a release from that bondage (Romans 8). After He destroyed the old world when Satan rebelled, He ordained His Son to be born through woman's womb to die on the cross to defeat the devil for us, and offer ALL who believe on Him eternal Life. This present world is preordained to be destroyed by fire.

3. When Jesus returns, literally how He ascended to Heaven per Acts 1, that will begin earth changes starting to return this earth to how God intended. Prior to the full Godhead returning to earth to live, there will be a thousand year period of Christ's reign with His elect over all nations. The devil, death, and hell will then be destroyed after that period, and the new heavens and a new earth period will be completed. Those who refuse to bow to The Father and His Son will choose to go into the lake of fire.

I have always, or at least for the last 25 years, questioned the teaching that God introduced HIS Law for the first time on Mt. Sinai, 430 years after Abraham. The Scriptures teach that Abraham obeyed God's Commandments, Statutes, and Laws. And also implies that Noah did as well. Noah knew God's creation of clean and unclean animals. Abimilec knew knew of God's Law regarding Adultery, etc., etc..

I believe that there was a Law that was "ADDED" to something because of Transgression of something as it is written in Gal. 3. Given that God would most certainly have given Abraham's Children the same Judgments and "Ways" God gave to Abraham, it seems clear that the "Something" that was being "transgressed" was God's Laws, Judgments and Statutes He gave to Abraham, and all mankind. The LAW that was Added, was the Leviticus Priesthood for the administration of God's Laws, and to perform "works of the Law" for atonement of sins until the Prophesied Messiah would come and take over the Priesthood duties Himself.. This LAW was to lead them to the Christ as it did Zechariahs, Simeon, Anna, and many more. A Law Abraham didn't have because Levi wasn't even born yet. So the Law that was "ADDED" "til the Seed should Come" would be the Priesthood Covenant God made with Levi which dealt with the 2 things God said HE would take over "After those days" in Jer. 31.

"After those days" when the Seed came, it is no longer lawful to perform those Priesthood duties for the atonement/forgiveness of sins. If these Sacrificial "works of the Law" were still needed for atonement, then Christ died in vain. But the Priest's had corrupted this Priesthood Covenant God made with Levi, they were blinded because of it, and they did not "SEE" the Christ when HE came. So they were still "Bewitching" the Galatians by promoting a Law that had become obsolete.

This is the LAW that was ADDED 430 years after Abraham, because of transgression "Til the Seed should come".

Paul fought against these religious Jews throughout the NT, who were going around behind them preaching to the new Converts justification or atonement of sins by "Works of the Law" Abraham didn't have, not by Faith as Abraham exhibited.

I think this truth has been missing from modern religions for centuries. But if you consider all that is written, It flows perfectly with the rest of the Scriptures. But if one believes God didn't give HIS Laws, Statutes, and Commandments until Sinai, there are all kinds of contradictions and confusion reading the Scriptures regarding God's Laws.

What a wonderful forum with folks, it seems, truly interested in discussing the actual Word of God.

Thanks Davy, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Were there things God's chosen were privy to, that they received of God that other peoples of that time didn't? Yes, I think so, otherwise how would Abel know his sacrifice would be pleasing to God, even before Genesis 9?

But like Paul said in Romans 5, sin is not imputed when there is no law, and Abram and Sari were half-brother and half-sister (Genesis 20:11-12). We thus can see early on they may have understood much of the moral law from God, but for covenant purposes, the law wasn't offered in a covenant situation until Moses. The reason for this is obvious to me, it was so that Abraham would be the spiritual father of many nations, just like Apostle Paul said. The Gospel Promise by Faith was always... number one, having been foreordained to be offered by Faith alone, so that righteousness would be of Faith, and not of the law, for the law cannot save. Like Paul said also, if there had been a law to give eternal life then righteousness should have been by the law (Galatians 3:21-22). In 1 Timothy 1, Apostle Paul said the law wasn't made for the righteous, but for the lawless and ungodly.

So in reality, the OT Patriarchs 'walked with God', pointing to God's ownership of His chosen elect, a situation that didn't apply to everyone in that time. To Jeremiah, God said that before He formed Jeremiah in the belly of woman's womb He knew him. To Abraham, God called him His friend (James 2:23). These things don't show the following of the law using a rote system, for their relationship was a special one with God. Our Lord Jesus showed this also during His Ministry about His elect Apostles in John 17. This was why our Lord Jesus could strike Saul down on the road to Damascus, directly affecting Saul's choice to believe on Jesus. All this must be kept in mind too during that time when God kept Abraham.

I understand the generally accepted religious views of the land I was born into. But there is so much of this view that doesn't align itself with Scriptures. When I couple this observation with God's First example of deception, it make me "take heed". God introduced "another voice" into the Garden. A voice that used some of God's Word to convince Eve that God"s instruction makes her blind, and that God knew this. This same voice is alive and well in the world today. It is part of the Choice God has set before us HE speaks to in Duet. 30.

Gen. 3:For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, (Transgress the Commandment (SIN) then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

And from the beginning we are told to "rule over" this "other voice".

Gen. 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

So then according to these scriptures sin existed in the very beginning. Sin is transgression of God's Law. Where there is no Law, there is no sin. But God Himself said sin existed and it's desire is for us, and we are to rule over it. So then God's Law was here in the beginning as well. But no Covenant with Levi or Levitical Priesthood Law yet. That Law was not "ADDED" until 430 years after Abraham.

The same thing about the serpent is written in another way in the NT.

1 Pet. 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, (rule over) knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. (Abel, Noah, Abraham, and all men of Faith.)

So then, when it is written;

Gen. 18:For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

And again;

Gen. 26:4: And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

It becomes clear that the Covenant God made with Abraham included God's Commandments, Statutes, and Laws.

Abraham was 75 years old when God called him away from the religion he was born into. He was married to Sara long before God called him. I'm sure he had many traditions which transgressed the Commandments of God. This is why God called him to "Deny himself" and follow Him in the first place, as Jesus instructs us all to do.His marriage to his half sister would be no different that any other transgression he was guilty of.

And God remembered HIS Covenant with Abraham when Abraham's Children cried out in Egypt.

Ex. 2:23
And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

And so God had written down His Laws, Statutes and Commandments, that Abraham would teach to his children, Only this time God ADDED a Priesthood Law. A Covenant with Levi on Israel's behalf because of Transgressions or "SIN". A LAW Abraham didn't have, which required certain Priesthood "Works of the Law" for the forgiveness of sins. There couldn't have been transgressions unless there were first Laws to transgress. Abraham was "justified" or forgiven his transgressions, Apart from this Law, as it didn't even exist until 430 years later. Abraham was justified or his sins were atoned for by HIS Faith/Belief in God, not by these Priesthood "works of the Law" added 430 years later.

Gal. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

But we were born into a religion whose doctrines imply that there was no Law before Mt. Sinai. You even mentioned that only those few chosen elect even knew of God's instructions. Yet this same God, said to be a Just God, wiped out entire Cities because they lived in Transgression of His Commandments (Sin). To suggest they didn't know they were sinning against God is simply not true.

Gen. 17:
And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

And what would the Priest of the Most High God be telling Abraham and the King of Sodom? Was Melchizedek just delivering food?

This issue becomes contentious because man doesn't like to be told they may be mistaken about something. I have personal experience in this matter :) The Mainstream Religion Jesus was born into had promoted a religion for centuries which had rejected God's Laws, Despised HIS Sabbaths, and created their own religion which "taught for doctrines the Commandments of men". They had led many astray. Jesus said HE came for those "lost sheep" that those Shepherds HE placed over them had betrayed.

Jer. 50:My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.

Matt. 15:But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Both Peter and Paul belonged to this group of Lost sheep who were "led astray" by those shepherds. The Christ picked them to Preach HIS Gospel since those who it was first given too didn't believe it, or have Faith in it and they corrupted it. These Apostles of Christ are the "restorer of paths to walk in" as Isaiah 58 tells us.

Anyway it is good to talk among ourselves of these things in these evil times of so many "other voices" who come in Christ's Name.
