Trump pays $2 million in damages ordered by judge over misuse of charity funds, according to NY attorney general

It's an "extraordinary rebuke to a sitting president."

Trump has paid $2 million in court-ordered damages for misusing funds in a tax-exempt charity he controlled, the New York attorney general said Tuesday.

The payment was ordered last month by a New York state judge in an extraordinary rebuke to a sitting president. Trump had been sued in 2018 by the New York attorney general, who alleged the president had illegally used funds from the Donald J. Trump Foundation to buy portraits of himself, pay off his businesses’ legal obligations and help his 2016 campaign.

In addition the remaining $1.8 million left in Donald's foundation will be distributed to 8 deserving charities.
“Funds have finally gone where they deserve — to eight credible charities,” James said in the statement. “My office will continue to fight for accountability because no one is above the law — not a businessman, not a candidate for office, and not even the president of the United States.”

Throughout the 2000s Donald used the charity to benefit himself. He used the charity's cash to buy a portrait of himself. He also used it to boost political campaigns like, Pamela Bondi’s Florida attorney general campaign, so she'd turn around & scratch his back. Then his own 2016 campaign.

Hi GB,

I think it should have been more like $2B. Millions really don't hurt this guy because he made more than that on the swindle, and so he comes out ahead. I think for Donald Trump it's always the end game numbers. He thought he could open up the grandest casino with a lot of money, but make a lot more money on the back end. However, when he saw that wasn't likely to happen, he just filed bankruptcy and walked away. Similarly, in this case, his attorneys whittled down his fine for running a scam charitable organization down to $2M and Trump knew that left him ahead of the game and paid...with the agreement that it would close the case against him.

God bless,

Agree with you that the amount is much too low. Donald had to pay $25 million for the fraud with Trump University.

I'm not going to go back and read everything right now, but IIRC, the fines related to the Trump Foundation were as low as they were because the amount of money that was misused was relatively low.
