From the "Unexpectedly good news", files: Poll Finds That 42% Of Young Americans Would Elect A Socialist President

“Forty-one percent (41%) of Democrats say they would vote for a presidential candidate who identifies himself or herself as a socialist, but only 19% of GOP voters and 16% of unaffiliateds agree,” Rasmussen notes.
...
A further Gallup poll from May found that 47% of all Americans would vote for a socialist presidential candidate. The poll noted that among Democrats, the support for socialism is even higher, with 70% declaring it would be better for America
.

If the cross-poll data is reasonably valid, then it means that fewer Americans are now supporting socialism than six months ago. That's a good thing. It means that the national discussion about socialism has already begun to change hearts and minds.

Too many people believing socialism will give them something for nothing.....
... meaning there's still more work to do, more people to be educated to the inevitable, inescapable horrors of socialism.

The "horrors of socialism" LOL

What's actually horrifying is the vast number of people in the U.S. without adequate or even any health care.

What's actually horrifying is just how many people are one medical emergency away from bankruptcy and losing everything they worked for throughout the decades of their lives.

What is horrifying are all the homeless people, families, veterans, and disabled who cannot get the care they need because they are too hungry, too cold, too sleep deprived, and too sick.

What is horrifying is immigrant children and families kept in cages, stacked practically on top of each other, and starved and refused medical treatment even as sickness spreads.

What is horrifying is our culture of dog-eat-dog, every person for themselves, since anything at all involving community and help for one's neighbors is "socialism".

And the list goes on.

And even more horrifying is to end up like the failed state of Venezuela and nobody has anything and mass migrations to other countries result because people are starving.....but please, go on with what you were saying?

Irrelevant. The candidates proposing to turn the U.S. into anything like Venezuela are....absolutely none of them.

IOW you don't care if people are homeless, starving, and dying of easily preventable diseases because no money is provided to them and they can't get jobs. You want disabled people to suffer endlessly and die early. You want the exact opposite of what Jesus wanted when he lived on Earth.

Do you seriously think there are no Americans with these problems? That there are no people in America who need health insurance, shelter, food, water, etc. and are unable to get those things?

So you believe it is better that no one have anything rather than a small segment do without?....and actually no one needs to do without since there is medicaid, food stamps, ADC, SSDI, unemployment insurance, food pantries, housing vouchers,.....do I really need to go on?

Really? Medicare for All and free college tuition are expected to cost about 80 trillion dollars over 10 years....and with an aging population that is living longer 80 trillion is probably gonna be waaaaaaay shy of the actual cost. And that is only 2 of their programs....Won't take long to go bankrupt that way....even if you confiscated all the wealth of all the billionaires in the US it would fall way short...and that would only be a one time deal cuz after that they would all head for the exit taking whatever money they have lleft with them.

I was simply accusing you of ignoring the fact that thousands of Americans have very little or nothing and the govenrment is responsible for helping tbem. By saying "other countires" you imply nobody in America has a smilar living situation.

Why would you want ANYBODY to do without?

Why do you accuse me of such? I neither made nor implied any such desire? Do you enjoy making wild accusations about my comments?

OK, so here it goes:

Despite being one of the most developed countries in the world, America still has thousands of citizens on the streets, in trailors, or living with their parents because they can't afford housing, food, etc. One of the problems they have is huge health care bills because insurance does not cover what they need, or doesn't pay enough and still leaves them in debt. Democrats solved the "pre-existing conditions" problem but did not go far enough - for example, hearing aids and glasses are still excluded. People who say they support socialism are in favor of helping those who still can't get what they need with private health insurance.

The thing that turns socialism--or capitalism--into tyranny is a single or dominant party political system, not the economic system itself. We should be more afraid of Republic attempts to demonize or crush the Democratic party than socialism.

True, especially as the economic systems being proposed are all hybrid systems that all include a good amount of free market capitalism. To try to turn any of those proposals into anything even remotely resembling pure socialism is simply being dishonest.

At least this poll suggests that a number of people at least aren't falling for all the fearmongering.

And then we hear that it's the Democrats have moved to the left, not Republicans to the right. You could run a solid Democratic campaign on that platform these days.

So why did Republicans change all that after 1956 and stop caring about those issues?

I believe it primarily started with the rise of the Moral Majority/Religious Right/Fundamantalist-Evangelical factions becoming political and usurping the Republican party for their own interests.
