I recall reading somewhere about a Communist plot to subvert the Catholic Church from within, and I thought it was exposed during the McCarthy era. An internet search elicited a book titled Aa-1025: The Memoirs of a Communist's infiltration in to the Church, by Marie Carre. I just wondered whether there is any other evidence of such a plot, and whether Catholics tend to take this seriously.

There is much evidence. Pope John Paul II knew of it, so did St. Jerzy Popieluszko, who at 37 years old was murdered by the Communists for his outspoken defense of his people in Poland.
He was beatified in 2010.

Thank you. I'm certain that the Christian faith in general has been, and is being, undermined deliberately.

If I may, as a guest >

It appears to me, that Communist groups have already discovered how various religious groups can get stronger when Communist governments try to force communism on them. Even wrong people, I mean ones who are mistaken in their religion, have stood up to Communist groups, and have won favor because of how Communists have tried to suppress them.

Ones in error can say, look at how we are being persecuted; so, therefore, we must be the only real and right group, or we would not be persecuted. Therefore, persecution, alone, is not a proof that my religion is right :)

So . . . what if Communists get inside a group and get things to change toward Communism, without outrightly attacking the group? This sneaky approach can help them to avoid resistance.

But Jesus guarantees how His church can not be defeated. So, in case the Communists change people in a group, these will only be ones who are not functioning with Jesus. And Communists and others could be going after whoever they can get for their political purposes, not caring at all about any religious group they infiltrate.

Google Bella Dodd. In the video below, Alice von Hildebrand recounts that Bella Dodd admitted to recruiting over 1,100 gay communist men who had 'neither faith nor morals' to enter Catholic seminaries and ruin the Church from the inside. It's largely responsible for abuse scandals that have come to light over the past 20 years, and may even be responsible for other serious issues as well.

Church Militant has written/spoken about extensively.

Also, I haven't read it yet, but Dr. Taylor Marshall's book Infiltration may go into the communist plot to some extent. He references it often in his podcast episodes.

Thank you! Yes, this is exactly what I was referring to. I'm not a Catholic, but I watched the film Spotlight the other day, and something about it made me uneasy and reminded me of this.

Interesting to read this about the communists. I knew of course they were anti-religion, but never knew they were this obsessed with the Church.
I have to admit their secret agents were committed though, going through years of seminary training without a real interest in God just for the cause of the party....

When it comes to infiltration the efforts of the freemasons are obvious as well, as st Max Kolbe was aware of as you can read here: "Satan Must Reign in the Vatican. The Pope Will Be His Slave." - The Lepanto Institute

I used to think these conspiracy ideas were for cuckoos with too much time to think, but it seems to be pretty true to be honest.
Just look at how often we see masonic checkered floors in our churches for example. Its something they like to leave behind if they have been involved in building and/or making decisions about church designs.

The Church is, and always has been, the biggest adversary to the ideals and philosophies that communism embodies (even before communism itself was theorized by Marx and his followers).

That's a very interesting article. Thank you.

There is also evidence of the KGB trying to infiltrate the Orthodox Church in Russia
They were owned by the KGB. They are recovering from that legacy.

The situation in China is terrible, with active surpression where infiltration has not worked fast enough.

To say that communist states generally do not approve of religion would be an understatement. At least Chinese Christians aren't being sent to reeducation camps, just yet. I do believe there is a list of state approved churches that one can join in China.

You're in trouble if you dare belong to any church not state approved. And if you go to the state approved churches you may find a slogan by the Communist leader where last month there would have been a Scripture verse or a statue of a saint. It's all happening right now.

Not to mention how they keep track records of those who go to the official church too. They count the people coming for sunday mass etc. I'm not saying that they use this information to anything yet, but in implying that the gathering of such information could be crucial in later developments.

They have the capacity to spy on the people as good as or better than the Stazi. And they seem to want to use it to control the people. That's why what is happening in Hong Kong is so interesting. And vital. Hong Kong has a large Christian and even Catholic contingent. China is worried about them.

to enter Catholic seminaries
This is interesting.

I don't typically think in such terms in general but I often thought that this could be possible even though I have absolutely no evidence of this myself.

As a matter of general subversion, it makes sense.

I will view the video.

This is true.

I recall, in my twenties ( three decades ago now :) ), seeing John Paul II as a fulcrum in the end of the Cold War. He was certainly a force in this direction at the time.

could be crucial in later developments
I agree. I also hope you can see that this is not limited to any one kind of totalitarian state.

For example, I had an evangelical colleague who travelled for work to a country in the Middle East. He was held up at arrivals in the airport for having a physical bible in his luggage. They let him through in the end but they hasseld him.

This is not related to matters of religion, but in my own work travel to China, I found it VERY unsettling that I could not simply use the internet search engine I prefer to see whatever I wanted on the web, whenever I wanted. I had trouble dealing with this for the ten days I was there. I can't see dealing with that on a daily basis. The local people I was working with told me that having a VPN is common to overcome this via IP address spoofing but if the authorities discover this, they have leeway to confiscate computers, phones, etc. Brutal.
