Controversial Amazon Synod statues seized and thrown into the Tiber River

ROME, October 21, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — In this dramatic video, titled “the journey of the Pachamamas,” at least two persons enter Santa Maria in Traspontina Church near St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome (apparently in the early morning hours), remove several replicas of the controversial carved statue of an unclothed pregnant female from the side altars where they had been displayed, proceed to the Castel Sant’Angelo and greet St. Michael the Archangel, before chucking the statues into the Tiber River.

The men behind the action have issued a statement, saying:

“This was done for only one reason: Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his Blessed Mother, and everybody who follows Christ, are being attacked by members of our own Church. We do not accept this! We do not longer stay silent! We start to act NOW!

Because we love humanity, we cannot accept that people of a certain region should not get baptized and therefore are being denied entrance into heaven. It is our duty to follow the words of God, like our holy Mother did. There is not second way of salvation.

Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat!”

I guess swimming the Tiber has become a bit more dangerous with all these idols being chucked in the river. ;)

Another take on it, and if you read his earlier material a lot more on Pachamama. I audited a course at the seminary while he was there. And not long after he got kicked out. But then snapped up by a seminary in Rome and ordained by pope John Paul. He is an astute observer of what goes on around the Vatican, much as Ed Pentin and Damian Thompson and Raymond Arroyo are.

I have not heard whether the idols have been fished out of the river or sank or are by now lost at sea. Or maybe they melted. One can hope.

It would be nice if someone posted context or links to some context about this issue so it would make sense without the necessity to watch videos.

Totally agree. I was visiting a friend's house, and someone there brought out this story, but they gave a version from RT.

I tend to be glad/am glad, the statue was tossed into the river, just as a nice signal to anyone, everyone.

But....

RT is...a Russian state funded news outlet.
(so...um...I tried to be very polite, as I pointed that out)

So, of course, not being born yesterday, I wondered if I was hearing the most accurate version of the events...or one massaged in a clever way, a carefully made-to-look-meaningful recasting....

So, of course, I wanted to get a version from a more solid Catholic source (not the Russia propaganda outlet).

Here's one favored by conservative Catholics:
Amazon Synod’s Controversial Carved Figures Thrown Into Tiber River

Of course, that 'conservative' site might at times fall into bias.

So, here's another angle from another mainstream major Catholic source:

As synod deliberates, vandals dump controversial indigenous carving into the Tiber

Between the 2, we wish we could learn more details, right?

Actually, I'd like to hear from the individual actually in charge of placing (or directing the placement of) the statue what they thought they were doing, and precisely why....

That would be best. Get their own words for what in the world they thought they were doing to put the statue in a church, right, and then after that, what are the bishops saying (not just the initial reaction, but the reaction later, after more reflection).

Many people are elated. I am one of them. :):crosseo:
Me too.
I've read elsewhere that officials are saying this isn't a statue of a pagan Goddess but represents women giving birth to celebrate fertility or the Virgin Mary. Is there any justification for this claim?
Right, I heard that part somewhere last night at my friend's house. But, still I could recognize that even if somewhat like that...it was still a mistake to put it in a church.

The figures have been present at several events connected to the Vatican’s Amazon synod and have been the subject of considerable controversy: Some have characterized them as images of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and others say they depict the indigeneous religious figure “Pachamama,” while Vatican spokesmen have characterized them more vaguely as symbols of “life.”

This from Life Site reporting on the comments of Cardinal Brandmuller gives a good synopsis of the doctrinal conflicts:

October 17, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – In a new statement on the ongoing Pan-Amazon Synod of Bishops in Rome, Cardinal Walter Brandmüller – a respected Church historian and one of the two remaining dubia cardinals – warns against the replacement of the Catholic faith by “a pantheistic natural religion of man.”

With regard to the Amazon Synod's working document (Instrumentum Laboris), the German cardinal makes it clear that it is essentially eclipsing all of the Church's magisterial documents from the Second Vatican Council onward, while nearly exclusively relying on quotations from a regional episcopal conference, the Latin American Conference of Bishops in Aparecida, Brazil, in 2007. Here, he warns against a “spectacular breach with the dogmatically binding tradition.”

After explaining the Catholic faith's nature as a religion based on God's revelation to man, Brandmüller points out that “the frightening question arises whether the protagonists of this synod are not more concerned with the attempt secretly to replace religion as man's answer to the call of its Creator by a pantheistic natural religion of man – namely, by a new variant of Modernism from the beginning of the 20th century.” And the German prelate draws a line to the warnings of Holy Scripture concerning the end times, saying: “It is difficult not to think of the eschatological texts of the New Testament!”

I've not read much on lifesitenews, probably just 5-8 articles. Not enough to form a view of it.
I just noticed though it is considered to be very far over to the 'right' side of the spectrum. That doesn't means it's always wrong, but it raises the caution that it can sometimes have a built-in weakness (sometimes) depending on the topic, so that I'd usually want to confirm or compare what it says to other legit sites. Not put all the eggs in one basket.

I'm sure you can read and judge for yourself. I have seen little in the 'fact massaging' from that site. The reason they are called "far right" by the MSM is because they report on things they don't.

Ok. The National Catholic Register (conservative) article I posted a link to above though, is useful for gaining more information. Still, as I wrote above, I'd like to hear the person in charge of putting that idol in a church say in their own words what in the world they thought they were doing....

Thanks for posting that. It seems bizarre that such an ambiguous figure could be considered OK to display in a church. Still, I don't know the context for sure -- whether it would be on display primarily as an art object or as an aid to worship.

Methinks it is a good idea to be careful that objects which might be worshiped by careless Christians should probably not be in a church, especially if it's unclear whether they support a Christian viewpoint. But what do I know -- I can't even agree about what all of the ten commandments are.

I first learned about this when a Catholic poster posted this several days ago. There is a video of some of what as taken place. It gives information back to an article in 2017.

Ambiguity is Pope Francis’ speciality.

Does evoke the question of “why?”
