depends on what you mean by try to become rich.
obtaining and maintaining a level of income, legally, to qualify for this extra taxation. Since this thread is promoting the helping of poor through taxation of the rich.....it should also be in favor of people becoming rich, so that there is a steady supply of help for the poor.

Yes then it would be perfectly OK to manage money well and legally work with the intent to try to earn more money.

I wonder if the OPer would be in favor of starting a thread titled "We are to become rich, so that we can help the poor!" For I too desire to help the poor, and this thread seems to promote becoming and staying rich, as a just way to do so.

I think that if taxation was "theft" Jesus would have spoken against it when he took on that topic specifically.

Maybe contemporary morality has advanced beyond where Jesus was, and we should now consider taxation as theft?

How do you decide which Biblical morals should be written into a government's legal code?
With secular government really it should only be some of the ten commandments mainly do not steal or murder. Along with otherwise behaving violently. such as rape.

that would work too, but then again you do not want income limits. One can have a lot of money and not always be greedy.

I was assuming that guidance to management of the funds would be included in the seeking to become rich.....and good stewardship would precede fund allocations...... but yes.

I guess the thought is, those that are arent rich, should only receive from the rich, and have little to no obligation to help the poor.....at least, not in the same capacity as the rich.

I desire to help the poor in the greatest capacity possible.....this thread states that I should be rich to be required to do so.........therefore I must be rich.......are you with me?

I think so, though I do not agree that one needs to be rich to help the poor.

That's what taxing the rich is. A penalty for being excessively greedy. So why is that bad?

You can't have a lot of wealth and not be greedy. If you choose to keep something for yourself when you could give it to someone who needs it more, that's the definition of greed.

Should it only be Christian morals that enter government legal code, or can we also respect the beliefs of other religions? For instance, would you be ok with "covering your face" being entered into laws that you must follow, because this is the belief of anothers religion?

Just because someone has a lot of money does not mean they have the intent of not sharing it. People can be rich and maintain a high standard of living without refusing to give resources to others.

I think that the argument is, that if you could give to someone in need but don't because you don't approve of their lifestyle choices, religion or culture then the government shouldn't make you.

If you have a high standard of living then you're spending on yourself and not on others. Again, the very definition of greed.

Do you think that as long as you give something away then you aren't greedy?

religion should play very little role in secular politics. That is not the same as saying that religion people should not work to try to pass laws with their morals, but something should not become law simply because a particular religion finds it morally wrong.

What you call being greedy, I see as working hard. Anyone who worked hard will be compensated for it.......the harder you work, the greater the reward.

Years that I spend little time in the garden, i barely grow enough for the squirrels to have some at the end of the season.

The years I spend a lot of time.....I harvest more than my family, neighbors and squirrel can eat in one season.

It is folly to liken hard work to being greedy. I was not greedy during my great harvesting years....I just sowed more seeds, put in more time, and toiled the soil longer and with more care.

All who labor will Eat. and the more you labor, the more you will have to eat. It have nothing to do with being greedy.

Nope. I'm not talking about the hard work you put in to get stuff. I'm talking about keeping stuff after you get it.
