My Bible class for Chinese nonbeliever College students had a hard time understanding Luke 4:

28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.

Why did they get so made, so quickly?

I explained the stories about Elijah and Elisha which would be common knowledge for everyone so why get so upset by just bringing it up?

I am trying to show how the Bible is not a fairy tail partly because the people are so real and not made up.

It seems like Jesus was comparing them to the people in the days of Elijah. This was right after He said "No prophet is acceptable in his own country. " They were insulted apparently since they thought so highly of themselves.

24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is acceptable in his own country.

25 But of a truth I say unto you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

His words insulted their understanding of their religion, even though it was true.
He told them God was doing some good things for gentiles, whle doing nothing for Israel and the jews said gentiles were cursed of God. The jews did similar things against Steven in Acts.

You can get the same response if you say something bad about Mohammed from muslims, they will also seek to kill you.

Naaman was Syrian, the land of Sidon was not Israel.

It was an insult that the prophet of God would bypass all of Israel and go to a gentile home - and bless it with food leaving Israel to starve in the drought. It would be like saying God loved gentiles more than Israel.

He knew they were going to ask for miracles.

And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is acceptable in his own country.

He knew that he would not be accepted there, even if he did the miracles.

And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.

He was not obligated to perform miracles for everyone, and he certainly wouldn't do any for them.

I think it is because they got offended by that Jesus compared them to those unbelievers that reject God and his prophets in earlier times.

I am coming up with pride, jealousy, envy, and insecurity as the problem. Jesus will point out late: you ancestors stoned and killed the prophets, but you say if I lived back then I would not have done that, yet they want to kill Jesus. For Jesus to say they are just like the people Elijah and Elisha dealt with is fighting words.
