'We Have a President Who Lost the Popular Vote by Three Million': Sanders Backs Abolishing the Electoral College - Nearly two-thirds of Americans support replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote system, according to recent polling

Do you think by the time that an American from our generation is old enough to run for POTUS the EC will have been replaced with a national popular vote system? I HOPE SO.

In our own lifetime there's been two candidates for POTUS who didn't win the votes of the American people but still became the president bc of the gerrymandered EC. Both are Republican. The way districts are severely gerrymandered, it's in favour of Republicans, not Democrats. I think the Republican party has severely damaged their reputation for younger voters. In time they could rehabilitate & earn back trust. So sure if the US went to a popular vote & a Republican won, I'd be in favour of that person becoming POTUS. That person would have actually earned the right to be the POTUS.

Republicans with integrity & courage should be in support of having the American people choose who is the president with an honest & fair system.

It's probably the dumbest idea yet to continue to support the gerrymandered EC system. More than it being dumb, it's cowardly. People living on the coasts do tend to be more highly educated and successful but their votes should count exactly the same as the ones living in Wyoming. 1 person, 1 vote.

Giving the choice to the American people, allowing each vote to count equally regardless of where you live, is the opposite of giving away the country. It's taking it back. The majority of Americans did not vote for Donald Trump. Republicans have boasted about corrupting the system through gerrymandering in their favour.

Besides, it's not like this happens often. Its only happened 5 times in US history including with Trump.

2 of the 5 times have happened in the past 20 years. Again, Republicans have boasted about corrupting the system to gerrymander in their favour. They've been blatant about it. They would be happy to see more Republicans who haven't earned the vote of the American people in office. Trump is the perfect example of why the EC has become corrupt and unpatriotic. He is the exact candidate the EC was designed to protect the country against, but instead the system was abused to enable him to win.

Even before the 2016 election scholars explained why the popular vote is better.

National popular vote far better than Electoral College system for choosing presidents, Stanford professors say
The Electoral College distorts presidential campaigns, disenfranchises voters and drives partisanship, Stanford scholars say. They suggest constitutional reforms to adopt a single national popular vote where the one-person, one-vote concept applies.

The EC is a protection against "Mob" ruling. The "nearly two-thirds" of Americans that want to do away with EC is mainly because our school system doesn't teach about it, nor do most really understand why its there. It helps "the little guys" (ie Wyoming) have just as powerful of a vote as the "bigger guys" (ie California).

The EC (1781 in its infant basic form) was established LONG before the Republicans were even a party (1854ish). So you cannot hardly even blame it on Republicans friend.

To do away with the EC is to do away with what the founding fathers of the US of A wished for, to help ensure "checks and balances". We place checks and balances for a reason. If I have to explain that I will, but it should be obvious considering our history and the reason we are a nation to begin with.

I would suggest people study up on its purposes before listening to media and biased people who don't understand it themselves.

Besides, it's not like this happens often. Its only happened 5 times in US history including with Trump.

Why the Electoral College

It's frustrating but not unexpected that only Republicans have totally disregarded the rules of this section and posted here when they're not allowed to do so. Kinda sums up Bernie's point, inadvertently.

Democrats were victorious in the last national election. They would have been even more so had it not been for corrupt gerrymandering in the favour of Republicans.

President Obama deported more illegal immigrants than any Republican president. He just focused on criminals rather than ripping apart innocent families. It's ignorant to state that Democrats are for open borders.

You think Democrats don't care about anyone but themselves??????? In the past week fully grown adult Republicans have had massive, sour temper tantrums bc of the casting of a mermaid, bc of a Nike shoe. But fully supported concentration camps where innocent children have been ripped away from their families, put into cages & treated inhumanely. They've support policies where cruelty isn't just the byproduct but the entire purpose.

Did you even read the section that you're in? Do you even understand that your posts that you keep putting time into are going to be deleted bc they're not allowed here? You are the one here spewing out propaganda that is false & baseless. I just provided evidence for why the EC is corrupt, from scholars. I did not choose biased sources like what the Trump supporter dropped.

There's nothing at all misleading about my OP headline. Lol. It's not surprising that a Trump voter is unable to understand that American citizens are able to live in another country while still being an American. My family moved to Canada years ago. We are still American citizens. We still own property in America and pay taxes.

Your concerns go well beyond the USA. There seems to be a wave of conservative thinking across the world. Decisions and comments are made that are catchy and appeal to those who don't think critically. Inevitably then this type of politics breeds xenophobia and promotes actions that are not in the best interest of society, but rather in the best interest of those seeking to be elected.

Critical issues to teens such as climate change are drowned out by politicians who serve carbon polluters.

I'm really glad more & more adults are joining youth in being focal so we have a louder voice. Politicians like Trump are going to continue to focus on what is best for themselves. Decisions made based on money for those who already have it. They'll continue to pump out disinformation to try to drown facts.
