Trump wrong that China’s had ‘worst year in 57 years’
Trump said China has "had now the worst year in 57 years."

China’s GDP recently grew at its slowest quarterly rate in 27 years, and it is projected to grow at its slowest yearly rate in 29 years. So China’s economy is slowing. But it’s not at its worst point in 57 years.

We rate this statement Mostly False.

There is absolutely nothing wrong about Trump's statement.

People whose hobby is to count up presidential falsehoods simply decide for themselves what is false; there's nothing more or less involved with this than that.
Other than the statistic(s) he apparently makes up on the spot?

(from the article linked in the OP)
Oddly enough, the president accurately described China’s economic slide as the "worst in 27 years" several times in July and August before experimenting with other timelines.
Recently, Trump had said China’s economy was at its worst point in "30, 40 years," "54 years," "52 or 54 years," "30 to 50 years" and "61 years."

No. If you read the statement without a preconceived opinion about its accuracy, you can see that he stated a number but what he was calculating was not outlined in detail. So what would make this the worst year in 57 years? Of course, we focus on the economic figures, but the president is also involved in dealing with everything else that the Chinese government is doing and experiencing.

For one example only, she is currently having a rebellion in Hong Kong on her hands and is apparently being forced by international pressure, among other factors, to give ground. This, as you know, is not typical for the PRC. Would the president have been thinking of this as one reason this year might be the worse--along with the economic issues and other things? Of course.

And it should also be said that believing whatever Politifact claims is a really risky business. Politifact is generally correct in its calls, but it also has a bias and has been known, not infrequently, to be dead wrong in its assessments, too!

huh...can you explain (with supporting links of course) how millions dying of starvation is not as bad as a smaller then expected economic growth? Or all the other reasons given in the article for why he was wrong?

People whose hobby is to count up presidential falsehoods simply decide for themselves what is false;
uhmm...since they provide links and explanations for why something is considered as false and you provide...well nothing really, to support why your opinion is all that's needed to show they're wrong. I'm going to have to say they really do seem to have won that argument :sorry:

there's nothing more or less involved with this than that.
Oh, I'd say there's a lot more involved in it then that.
tulc(will be watching for those links in support of Albion's proof of the article errors)

We're all deciding what to believe as true or false as a matter of circumstance. Any reasoning based upon falsehood ends in a contradiction.

Based on past performance, I think taking anything Donald Trump says as fact is even riskier business. imho, ymmv

I would think it reasonable if a poster said that.

You notice that such was not the case when this thread was started.

If you have to fall back on an unspecific claim about "past performance," it means that THIS statement by President Trump was not clearly false after all.

No it doesn't. I'll quote the article again, "Recently, Trump had said China’s economy was at its worst point in "30, 40 years," "54 years," "52 or 54 years," "30 to 50 years" and "61 years."

Which one is the real one, if any?

Trump wrongly claims China is having its ‘worst year in 57 years’

Given that Trump couldn't even get the path of Hurricane Dorian straight in his head, why would we think that he is capable of understanding the complexities of the Chinese economy?

This President says whatever comes into his head to solve one crisis, only to have his words spawn another to replace it!

Actually he could be correct because CIA economist Jim Rickards in 2014 did this video in which he states that about fifty percent of the Chinese economy is construction...... and a huge percentage of that is White Elephants.

Beautiful cities that the people of China cannot afford to live in so they are empty. That is after twenty five minutes in this surprising forty six minute video.
