The Holman Christian Standard Bible
“Repent (metanoeo) and believe (pisteou) may be understood as opposite sides
of the same coin. Repent means to turn from one’s allegiance to sin and unbelief,
whereas believe means to place one’s trust in Christ. Thus, when one is mentioned
the other is implied … John never used the words repent, repentance, or faith
to describe the way people are saved. Instead, he used believe since this term
included all of these ideas.”
When believers first become saved, they are forgiven of their PAST sins
“forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.” (2 Peter 1:9, NLT)
“old sins” (KJV, NKJV, RSV) ● “former sins” (NASB, ESV) ● “past sins” (NIV, HCSB)
Paul’s warning to the Corinthian church
He wrote this concerning the letter of rebuke which he had previously sent to them:
“… the pain (from his rebuke) caused you to repent and change your ways.
It was the kind of sorrow God wants His people to have, so you were not
harmed by us in any way. For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience
leads us away from sin and results in salvation.” (2 Corinthians 7:8-9)
Peter warns believers to repent and live holy lives
“He does not want anyone to be destroyed (perish spiritually),
but wants everyone to repent … what holy and godly lives you should live
… I am warning you ahead of time…be found living peaceful lives
that are pure and blameless” (2 Peter 3:6-14)
● Can believers live holy and godly lives without continuously repenting of their sins?
● “… we ought to live holy and godly lives, lest we also be condemned with the world
(Romans 13:11-12, 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8) … we must repent and obey and preach the gospel”
(The Applied New Testament Commentary, Dr. Thomas Hale, medical missionary)
It is necessary to confess our sins (and repent, forsaking them)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
“This is an extremely important verse … all men need to be repeatedly purified from
all unrighteousness –- from all their sins … We must confess our sins and turn from
them … We must also confess them with our actions … John is talking here about
repentance … we must hate our sins and turn from them. This is true repentance.”
(The Applied New Testament Commentary, Dr. Thomas Hale, medical missionary)
“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses
and forsakes them (i.e. repents) will have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)
Remember Jesus warnings to the 7 churches in Revelation 2 and 3
● He warns 5 of the 7 churches >>> they need to repent.
● He warns all 7 churches >>> they need to be overcomers.
This has nothing to do with believing that Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 5:4-5).
When John talks about "the world", he is talking about the world of non-believers!
This has to do with Revelation 3:21 …
“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne,
as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”
