The Holman Christian Standard Bible
Repent (metanoeo) and believe (pisteou) may be understood as opposite sides
of the same coin. Repent means to turn from one’s allegiance to sin and unbelief,
whereas believe means to place one’s trust in Christ. Thus, when one is mentioned
the other is implied … John never used the words repent, repentance, or faith
to describe the way people are saved. Instead, he used believe since this term
included all of these ideas.

When believers first become saved, they are forgiven of their PAST sins
“forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.” (2 Peter 1:9, NLT)
“old sins” (KJV, NKJV, RSV) ● “former sins” (NASB, ESV) ● “past sins” (NIV, HCSB)

Paul’s warning to the Corinthian church
He wrote this concerning the letter of rebuke which he had previously sent to them:
“… the pain (from his rebuke) caused you to repent and change your ways.
It was the kind of sorrow God wants His people to have, so you were not
harmed by us in any way. For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience
leads us away from sin and results in salvation.” (2 Corinthians 7:8-9)

Peter warns believers to repent and live holy lives
“He does not want anyone to be destroyed (perish spiritually),
but wants everyone to repent … what holy and godly lives you should live
… I am warning you ahead of time…be found living peaceful lives
that are pure and blameless” (2 Peter 3:6-14)
Can believers live holy and godly lives without continuously repenting of their sins?
“… we ought to live holy and godly lives, lest we also be condemned with the world
(Romans 13:11-12, 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8) … we must repent and obey and preach the gospel”
(The Applied New Testament Commentary, Dr. Thomas Hale, medical missionary)

It is necessary to confess our sins (and repent, forsaking them)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
This is an extremely important verse … all men need to be repeatedly purified from
all unrighteousness –- from all their sins … We must confess our sins and turn from
them … We must also confess them with our actions … John is talking here about
repentance … we must hate our sins and turn from them. This is true repentance.
(The Applied New Testament Commentary, Dr. Thomas Hale, medical missionary)

“He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses
and forsakes them (i.e. repents) will have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

Remember Jesus warnings to the 7 churches in Revelation 2 and 3
● He warns 5 of the 7 churches >>> they need to repent.
● He warns all 7 churches >>> they need to be overcomers.

This has nothing to do with believing that Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 5:4-5).
When John talks about "the world", he is talking about the world of non-believers!
This has to do with
Revelation 3:21 …
To him who overcomes
I will grant to sit with Me on My throne,
as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”

Wow, don't you know that the if the Corinthian church had gone on with their sins the whole church would have gone to hell. They needed to truly repent. 2 Corinthians 7:10 "10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

You said: “He does not want anyone to be destroyed (perish spiritually), but wants everyone to repent

Wow, that is what God want for everyone in the world - to repent and be saved.

There were many in the church ages that had never repented, but were thinking they were saved. Look at Sardis. It was the dead church. There are many throughout church history that were never even on the path toward salvation. Zack, they were not Christians in the sight of God.

This discussion misses a vital point. There are two salvations that we experience as born again Christians. I prefer to use the word "deliverance" for the second salvation because there is confusion as to what salvation means. A real Christian is born again. When person repents, accepts the saving work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection, and accepts Christ, that person is born again. He then has a new spirit and the Lord Jesus lives there in the Person of His Holy Spirit.

The Christian then has a choice. He can choose to live according to the life of Christ within, or choose to live by self and the flesh. God will not reject the born again spirit. However, we should be experiencing ongoing deliverance from sin, self, Satan and the world system.

Those who do not give up their sinful ways will suffer great loss. "When you are gathered in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of the Lord Jesus, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord" 1 Corinthians 5, 4 & 5. No, I don't know why the quote is partly in blue....
We need to remember that the gospel is of the kingdom, not just going to heaven when we die. God wants to reward us with Kingdom blessings. Those who lose much of self and the flesh in this life will gain much in the Kingdom. Those who live for themselves will suffer great loss.
If an individual loves to sin and cannot be brought to true repentance, I doubt the reality of their born again experience.

A person who chooses to live by self and the flesh was NEVER born again to begin with. I don't think you know how powerful the born again experience is, let alone the result. 1 John 3:9 is the result.

Those who do not give up their sinful ways will suffer great loss. "When you are gathered in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of the Lord Jesus, deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus 1 Corinthians 5, 4 & 5.

(Click open.) What do you think the red part means? And what great loss will they suffer? Do you think if they never repent, they still go to heaven, but lose rewards, or their life, or what?

1 John 1:8 is an unregenerate. 1 John 1:9 is how to become a regenerate. 1 John 1:16 is a sin not leading to death - a trespass. Yes, Christians will commit them, but if they are walking in the Spirit, they will automatically be cleansed. If they are not walking in the Spirit, they could advance to sins unto death. In other words, they will not be saved.

If they are actually born again they will not commit sins of lawlessness. But they could commit sins not unto death - trespasses. But as long as they are walking in the Spirit and forgiving others their trespasses against them, those trespasses will be forgiven.

I agree that 1 Joh1 isn't talking about the born again 'relationship' we have with our God in spirit. It is talking about the soulish "FELLOWSHIP" (1Joh 1: 3, 6, 7) we are walking in, as we work out our soul salvation with fear and trembling.

And 'souls' aren't born of God either, only "begotten" spirits are. 1 Joh 5:1

You can stay ignorant, and believe it okay that John is contradicting himself with 1 John 3:9, or you can smarten up and ask yourself what is actually meant; also why verses 6, 8 and 10 are all separated by a verse of light that contrasts with those three verses of darkness.

Does everyone understand that when one first receives the Holy Spirit,
He comes in and dwells inside his spirit ...
... as man is made up of body, soul (mind, will, emotions), and spirit.

Unregenerate man is spiritually dead.
Regenerated man is spiritually alive.

IMO, Unregenerate man has an empty spirit.
Regenerated man has God's Spirit dwelling in his spirit.

Those regenerated believers
who have also been baptized with the Holy Spirit
have been filled with God's Spirit to overflowing.
(Some insist that the overflowing is the tongues coming out.)

No, the context is in the chapter. 1 John 3:4 is the type of sin that a Christian cannot commit after receiving a different nature than the one that commits that type of sin. If you want to say it is about those "practicing" sin as preachers teach that are trying to fill the seats, "practicing" is only used for righteousness, not sin.

Christians can and do sin. Jesus gave us a way to be absolved from sin. Once saved, always saved is a myth. We are flesh. We are weak. Only Jesus is perfect.

We are only weak while we do not have His powerful sinless Spirit in us. Yes, OSAS is a myth. So is the myth that we will always sin, because when Jesus said He would free us from sin He did not lie. It is the teachers that say we will always sin that are lying to you and don't know the power of Jesus.

John 8:34-36; 1 John 3:5

You are Catholic, so maybe you will understand this. Jesus frees us from committing mortal sins. His blood cleanses us from venial sins as long as we are walking in the Spirit and forgiving others their trespasses against us. 1 John 1:7 and Matthew 6:14-15

Even as a Christian, we sometimes trip up and commit mortal sin. This is why we have Jesus to turn to to pray for forgiveness. This is why, us Catholics, believe in confession.

I'm glad you came back. I wanted to ask you a question. If a Catholic commits a mortal sin and they go to confession, what does the priest tell them generally?
