A short video that explains what the unforgivable sin is. Jesus forgave many people of their sins. He forgave the woman caught in adultery, and there were many things that Jesus forgave but there was one thing that he wasn't forgiving of.
I believe unbelief in Jesus Christ is the unforgivable sin, not hypocrisy. "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God (John 3:18)."

The unforgivable sin is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. The word blaspheming means to speak evil against. It has nothing to do with belief in Christ... it has everything to do with speaking poorly, in an evil manner, about the Holy Spirit.

The extrapolation is that by denying Christ you ARE speaking evil of the Holy Spirit

That is a leap the scriptures do not make. As others have said, the scriptures say the unforgivable sin is blasphemy of the HS.

Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Mat 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Hi GraceBro, "unbelief in Jesus Christ" is a forgivable sin, on this side of the grave anyway, yes? Since that's true, then I don't believe that it qualifies as the unpardonable sin, does it?

Matthew 12
31 Any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

The unpardonable sin is an eternal and unforgivable sin from the very moment that it's committed.

--David

Mark 3
28 All sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin
30 because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

No, that is your view of scripture being applied over top of something. Blasphemy, if you look it up.... requires speaking evil of something. If I don't give God a thought, don't make a decision at all, I just don't care... then I haven't spoken evil, I haven't said anything.

The context around Yeshua's comment about blasphemy and the Holy Spirit is that those there were attributing the work He was doing, the Holy Spirit in that body.... to Satan. They were speaking evil of God's active force that was there to do good works.

As the comments before mine show, it's acommon belief and pointing it out doesn't necessarily mean it's my belief. And anyone denying Christ IS speaking evil and denying the Holy spirits power. But ya know, like every thing else it's just an opinion and nothing to let ruin your day.

Yes, the unpardonable sin, which is eternal and unforgiveable, is not believing in Jesus Christ as your savior. That unbelief will result in a person spending eternity in Hell. It is the only sin Jesus did not die for on the cross. Thanks for supporting my argument.

"When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me (John 16:8-9) ..."

"Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son (John 3:18)."

Grace and Peace

That has been forgiven more times than any person could count. Scripture says a different sin is the one that is unforgivable.

Well, I believe it hasn't according to the scriptures I posted and others. If it has been forgiven then nobody is in jeopardy of hell and my preaching the Gospel is a waste of time. Grace and Peace.

No, if not believing in Jesus is unforgivable then no one can convert and be saved because of the whole not believing in Jesus thing.

What you are saying is on the day of judgment, not believing in Jesus is unforgivable but that doesn't mean anything because on that day no sin is being forgiven because it's time to be sentenced and punished.

Not believing in Jesus has been forgiven countless times so it is not the unforgivable sin. The bible says speaking against the holy Spirit is unforgivable.

Not believing in Jesus has been forgiven countless times so it is not the unforgivable sin. The bible says speaking against the holy Spirit is unforgivable.
The Pharisees believed Jesus was committing blasphemy because He claimed to be God. Jesus claimed to be equal with God. Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, who effectively is the same as God. To them, that was His act of blasphemy. Therefore, if the definition of blasphemy is to claim you are God, for Jesus to say that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin, is to say that claiming to be the Holy Spirit is a sin that will not be forgiven. Why would that be a sin that is not forgiven? It is because in order to be saved you have to recognize that you are spiritually dead. You have to recognize and acknowledge that your spirit is not the Holy Spirit (is not spiritually alive) and that you have a need for the Holy Spirit. But, if you believe that you do not have a need for the Holy Spirit, then by default you are claiming that your spirit is adequate (that it is alive and equal with the Holy Spirit of God) and that is blasphemy. Claiming that you or your spirit is equal with the Holy Spirit is blasphemy. That is a sin that cannot be forgiven to the point of salvation because that is salvation. Salvation is the restoration of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. If you don't believe in Jesus Christ and His offer of the life of God then that is a sin that will not be forgiven. You will remain spiritually dead and face an eternity separated from God.

Therefore, if the definition of blasphemy is to claim you are God

It is blasphemy to claim to be God if you aren't but that isn't the definition of blasphemy itself.

This is the definition for the Greek word for blasphemy:

G988
βλασφημία
blasphēmia
Thayer Definition:
1) slander, detraction, speech injurious, to another’s good name
2) impious and reproachful speech injurious to divine majesty
Part of Speech: noun feminine
A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from G989
Citing in TDNT: 1:621, 107

, for Jesus to say that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin, is to say that claiming to be the Holy Spirit is a sin that will not be forgiven.

No, it's about speaking negatively about the Holy Spirit.

No, it's about speaking negatively about the Holy Spirit.
Well, I will have to agree to disagree with you. I believe the scriptural context, historical context, and my understanding of salvation and the Gospel teach otherwise. I am sorry if the reasons for why I believe as I do are not adequate enough for you. But, I thank you for the conversation. May God continue to reveal to you all that you have been given as an inheritance through your faith in Jesus Christ.

Hi again GraceBro, so it's your belief that anyone who rejects Christ/does not respond in faith when they first hear the Gospel is thereby lost forever?

It doesn't sound like they'll be many people in Heaven/on the New Earth if that's true :(

Thanks!

A short video that explains what the unforgivable sin is. Jesus forgave many people of their sins. He forgave the woman caught in adultery, and there were many things that Jesus forgave but there was one thing that he wasn't forgiving of.

Did Judas commit the unpardonable sin? He never sought forgiveness/ release from Jesus before he died unforgiven, still imprisoned in his own blame and shame. Jesus' remark that it would be better had Judas never been born is made in pity for Judas' lack of faith and the infamy in which his name will be held by future generations, not because his sin is unforgivable. Indeed, did Jesus not 'pay the debt' in full for Judas on the Cross?

Blasphemy against the Spirit is speaking against and resisting the coming Kingdom (which the Spirit ushers in). As long as you continue to do that, you're unable to be released from captivity. So Jesus is really just saying that in order to access God's free and universal gift of grace, we need to respond to the gospel of the kingdom in faith. Redemption requires faith. This is entirely consistent with the gospel message throughout the NT.

Eventually, when the veils are removed and the gospel proclaimed, all mankind will be drawn to Jesus by the God's irresistible liberating grace and mercy.

No, David, I have no clue where you are getting the idea that I said anyone who rejects Christ "when they first hear the Gospel is thereby lost forever." Only if they die in their unbelief are they lost forever.

Thanks for that. Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss - that is hypocrisy. The problem with hypocrisy is that the person is never whole or complete. That is while the hypocrite may say they repent there is a part of them that doesn't repent. (The video at the beginning explains this) Jesus many times criticized hypocrites -God doesn't want us to be actors in our relationship with him.

Hi GraceBro, the specific sin that is described in the Bible as being unforgiveable (e.g. Matthew 12:31-32; Mark 3:28-30 .. the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit), is a sin which is committed during this life, but unlike any other sin or blasphemy, can never be forgiven ... even on this side of the grave!

But "unbelief" is a sin that ~is~ forgivable, until the very moment of death, that is (at least, I believe that it is), so how can impenitence be what the Bible describes as the Unpardonable Sin?

Thanks!
